Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational swordsmanship and conditioning | 3 4 7 | Begins training under Vic, progressively increasing running distances, carried weights, and resistance training. |
| Approximately comparable to a 50-million-Beli pirate | 41 | Uses Chad to refine her sword techniques before killing him; certain Devil Fruit users would still pose difficulties. |
| Emerging blindfolded evasion | 57 | Begins avoiding some of Vic’s bamboo-sword strikes during Observation Haki training, though she still suffers injuries. |
| Realm of Cutting Steel | 73 | Breaks through while protecting Vic from Shanks, learning to perceive and gather the Sword Qi surrounding her blade. |
| Observation Haki demonstrated | 114 | Senses Vic approaching the training clearing. The exact awakening chapter is not specified. |
| Soru learned; Kami-e already acquired | 134 | Learns Soru in two days under Zephyr. Her existing speed was already sufficient; the missing element was its technique. |
| Geppo demonstrated | 154 | Uses Geppo during her victory over Bastille, although she subsequently claims not to remember doing so. |
| Instinctive combat developed | 201 202 | Sets aside Observation Haki against Kanbo, allowing bodily reactions to dictate her swordplay and making her attacks harder to anticipate. |
| Flying Slashes demonstrated | 226 | Launches two ranged sword attacks that cut through the Flower Field behind Lao Si. |
| All six Six Powers documented | 231 238 | Her repertoire includes Soru, Geppo, Kami-e, Shigan, Tekkai, and Rankyaku, supported by Vic’s specialized training. |
| Float-Float Fruit and flying-sword control | 358 360 363 | Learns sword-riding and remote sword combat shortly after eating the fruit; defeats a pirate swordsman within days of acquiring it. |
| One hundred flying swords | 490 | Reports controlling a hundred swords, but admits that concentrating on her fruit has led her to neglect Haki training. |
| Armament Haki confirmed | 522 523 | Uses hardened strikes and coats Aizen against Crocodile. Her limited reserves prevent a sustained battle. |
| Major Armament Haki improvement | 559 | Three months on Raijin Island improve her body, swordsmanship, and Haki. She can coat flying swords and defeats Wendy, Barnett, and Frodeku together. |
| Advanced Haki; Emperor’s second-in-command level | 699 | Has awakened Conqueror’s Haki through years of Vic’s Soul-Soul Fruit support and learned Conqueror’s Coating. Her Observation and Armament Haki are also advanced. |
| Admiral-level combat strength | 905 | Illusion training improves her Haki’s quantity, responsiveness, and flow. Vic judges her capable of fighting an Admiral head-on, though her endurance remains somewhat inferior. |
| More than a thousand deployed swords | 984 | Maintains over a thousand flying swords around her while using smaller groups for defense and attacks against Saint Mars. |
| Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin | 1171 | Coats flying swords in Armament and Conqueror’s Haki, combines them with instinctive combat, and destroys Mura’s undying body. |
Background / History
Childhood on Laipe Island
Rebecca lost both parents to pirates. Her father died on a Marine mission; after learning of his death, her mother became distracted and was killed in a subsequent battle. Rebecca was too young to remember them and grew up with her grandmother, Maria, supported by Marine family benefits and help from their neighbors 1 35.
She initially wanted to become a Marine because she admired her mother. That ambition became a determination to protect others after Derek of the Claw Pirates injured Maria while Rebecca watched from a cupboard. Despite Vic’s warnings about the dangers of Marine service, she asked him to make her stronger 3 4.
Vic built her training around swordsmanship, physical conditioning, and eventually Haki. He initially postponed the Six Powers because her young body could not safely withstand their demands. Maria’s death later removed Rebecca’s last family tie to the island 7 29 35 37.
Marine Training and Service
Tsuru came to Laipe Island seeking Maria and Rebecca. She revealed that Rebecca’s mother had served under her and that she still blamed herself for failing to save her. Rebecca accepted her invitation to join the Marines, asking that Vic be taken as well 37.
During her training years, Rebecca’s desire to protect Vic repeatedly drove her growth. She reached the Realm of Cutting Steel while standing between him and Shanks, and renewed her determination after seeing Vic badly injured following his clash with Kaido 73 109.
Rebecca developed under Zephyr, defeated Bastille in a spar, and helped Vic rescue trafficking victims. Her service also included setbacks: Foxy once caught her with his Devil Fruit ability and used her as a hostage, an incident she still found humiliating years later 134 154 159 778.
At Twin Cape, she faced a conflict between Marine duty and gratitude toward Shanks, whose pressure had enabled her earlier breakthrough. After testing her swordsmanship against him, she deliberately let herself be injured and knocked into the sea to withdraw from the coming battle. Laboon brought her back to shore 298 299 300.
Rebecca refused an assignment aboard Tsuru’s ship because she wanted to remain with Vic. She subsequently served as a Marine Headquarters Colonel and developed the Float-Float Fruit into a remote sword-fighting style 324 358 363 522.
Joining the Thunder God Pirates
By Kanbo’s reunion with her, Rebecca and Vic had left the Marines and become pirates. Their crew faced Marine and World Government pursuit after killing a Celestial Dragon. Rebecca recommended Kanbo for membership, explaining that she had defeated him two years earlier but had allowed him to leave 606 607.
During a later escape, Burns broke through her flying-sword defense and injured her. Vic ordered her to evacuate the others rather than remain in the battle, and she lifted their pirate ship into the sky with the Float-Float Fruit 613 614.
Rebecca became a frequent leader of the Thunder God Pirates’ expeditions while Vic trained in seclusion. A voyage initially intended to challenge Ace instead spread her reputation as the Ten Thousand Swords Witch throughout the New World 683 699.
Protecting the Straw Hat Pirates
Vic assigned Rebecca to watch over the Straw Hats without intervening unless their lives were threatened. She followed that restriction during their contest with Foxy and the battle at Enies Lobby, but fought Aokiji to cover their escape from Long Ring Long Land 778 779 780.
In Water 7, she killed a CP0 agent pursuing the crew. Later, she stopped Doflamingo from killing the exhausted Straw Hats at Thriller Bark, badly injuring him before he escaped through a substitute ability 781 782.
Later Training and Conflicts
Rebecca accepted Vic’s relationship with Gion after he revealed that they had been together for years and had twins. She agreed to meet Gion and the children rather than leave him 838.
Vic’s illusion training subsequently exposed weaknesses in her willpower while substantially strengthening her Haki. During their test fight afterward, an apparition of her Celestial Dragon tormentor caused her to lose control and stab Vic; she immediately checked his injury, and he reassured her 899 905.
In later battles, Rebecca fought Saint Mars, repeatedly dismembering him without stopping his regeneration. Against Mura, she recognized that the enemy’s apparent Future Sight relied on reading her thoughts and returned to instinctive combat, ultimately destroying her with Haki-coated flying swords 984 1171.
Appearance
- Wine-red hair: Resembles her mother closely enough for Tsuru to recognize her immediately 37.
- Athletic build: Years of weighted training give her dense muscles, tough bones, and considerable strength 105 153.
- Combat equipment: Wears a fitted combat outfit with a longsword at her waist and a dark sword case on her back; during Marine service, she also wears a Justice coat 515 521.
- Youthful appearance: Pure Gold prevents her from aging, leaving her looking barely into her twenties despite being in her thirties 1170.
- Contrasting bearing: Can shift from a sweet expression around Vic to an aloof demeanor around others 395.
Personality
Rebecca’s original ambition centers on protection rather than status: she wants enough strength to keep her grandmother, neighbors, and eventually Vic safe. She is openly affectionate toward Vic and trusts him deeply, but refuses to remain merely someone he protects 4 37 73 109.
Her gentleness toward civilians contrasts with her lethal approach to enemies. She reassures rescued trafficking victims with an approachable smile, yet targets pirates’ throats and other vital points without hesitation, reasoning that killing them will save more people. She also genuinely enjoys challenging fights 159 195 201 232.
Rebecca is more comfortable carrying out tasks than planning or managing them. After neglecting Haki in favor of her newly acquired fruit, she asks Vic to organize her training. Strong emotions can also undermine her judgment: anger disrupts her Observation Haki, and memories of her illusionary tormentor make her lose control 226 490 905.
Despite her strength and age, she retains a youthful stubbornness. She is embarrassed by past defeats, competitive with peers, and not discouraged by losing narrowly to Yamato despite recognizing their difference in natural talent 721 778 1170.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Instinctive Combat
Rebecca combines precise thrusts, lethal close-range cuts, high-speed movement, and ranged sword attacks 195 226.
- Realm of Cutting Steel: Perceives and controls the Sword Qi generated around her blade 73.
- Flying Slashes and Sword Gang: Cuts distant targets and combines ranged sword attacks with other techniques 226 247 610.
- Instinctive swordplay: Stops consciously selecting techniques and lets immediate bodily reactions guide her attacks, disrupting opponents who depend on predicting intentions 201 202 523.
- Mental countermeasure: Applies the same principle against Mura after identifying thought-reading behind her supposed Future Sight 1171.
Float-Float Fruit
Rebecca develops the fruit around remotely controlled swords, aerial mobility, and lifting large objects rather than simply imitating Golden Lion’s fighting style 358 624.
- Sword-riding: Uses a flying sword for travel and aerial combat; at full speed, ordinary observers struggle to follow her 384 525.
- Multi-directional attacks: Controls swords independently to surround enemies while remaining outside their reach 362 657.
- Defensive formations: Spins swords into shields and cone-shaped barriers, strengthening them with Armament Haki 613 984.
- Large-object levitation: Lifts a pirate ship and stops a falling ice island after touching it 614 724.
- Battlefield support: Can continue controlling other swords while personally engaging opponents 610.
- Limits: Titan Island’s gravity reduces the number of swords she can control to roughly a hundred. Her fruit is explicitly unawakened at that point 721.
Haki
Rebecca eventually develops all three types of Haki, with substantial assistance from Vic’s training methods and Devil Fruit abilities 606 699.
- Observation Haki: Detects presences, anticipates attacks, and monitors allies during combat. Anger can interfere with its reliability 114 154 226 247.
- Armament Haki: Hardens her body and coats Aizen and flying swords. Vic helps her awaken it; Raijin Island and gravity-bracelet training accelerate its growth 523 559 606 905.
- Ryuo: Channels flowing Armament Haki along Aizen to penetrate defenses more effectively 905.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Awakened through prolonged support from Vic’s Soul-Soul Fruit; she subsequently learns Conqueror’s Coating 699 721.
- Endurance limit: Coating numerous swords with Conqueror’s Haki and Ryuo rapidly drains her reserves, as demonstrated against Kaido 725.
- Future Sight: Advanced Observation Haki does not establish that she possesses Future Sight; she cannot claim the ability when Mura challenges her about it 1170.
Six Powers and Physical Conditioning
Rebecca learns all six techniques after years of preparatory conditioning under Vic 134 238.
- Soru and Geppo: Provide rapid movement and aerial maneuvering independent of her Devil Fruit 153 154 301.
- Shigan: Pierces opponents with concentrated finger strikes 231.
- Rankyaku: Benefits from her swordsmanship and supplements her ranged attacks 238 247.
- Tekkai and Kami-e: Round out her defensive techniques 134 238.
- Strength and durability: Extensive weight training lets her contend with much larger opponents and withstand blows that would overwhelm less-conditioned fighters 105 247 484.
Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin
Rebecca’s ultimate move sends Haki-coated flying swords into a converging assault while she closes on the opponent 1171.
- Combines ink-black Armament Haki with gold-and-red Conqueror’s Haki 1171.
- Curves swords around Rebecca to strike from every direction 1171.
- Destroys Mura’s undying body, reducing her to blood mist 1171.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Aizen — Sword forged and named by Vic; Shanks recognizes it as a high-grade blade. Rebecca later channels flowing Armament Haki through it 299 905.
- Blue Great Grade Sword — A gift from Vic, who encourages her to awaken Armament Haki and nurture the weapon with it 114.
- Flying swords and sword case — Vic makes the case to hold several rows of swords for her Float-Float Fruit style. Swords without adequate Haki protection can be broken, deformed, or melted by powerful attacks 358 613 657.
- Training weights and gravity bracelets — Support her physical conditioning and accelerated Haki development 153 905.
- Pure Gold — Preserves her youthful appearance 1170.
- Log Pose — Guides her when traveling independently by flying sword 384.
Relationships
- Vic — Childhood companion, principal teacher, captain, and eventual lover. Her determination to protect him drives several breakthroughs; he supplies training, weapons, her Devil Fruit, and methods for strengthening Haki 3 73 358 606 838.
- Maria — Grandmother and childhood guardian. After losing her parents, Rebecca considers Maria her only remaining family and grieves deeply as her health fails 35 37.
- Tsuru — Her mother’s former superior and a protective elder figure. Brings Rebecca into the Marines and takes pride in her achievements 37 324 325.
- Zephyr — Marine instructor who teaches her Six Powers techniques and supervises her practical combat training 134 299.
- Shanks — Opponent and benefactor whose pressure helps her reach Cutting Steel. Rebecca later withdraws from a Marine confrontation to repay that debt 73 298 299.
- Gion — Companion and fellow partner of Vic. Rebecca accepts their shared relationship after learning about Gion’s twins 465 838.
- Wendy, Barnett, and Frodeku — Longtime companions and training partners; Rebecca defeats all three together after her Raijin Island training 559.
- Kanbo — Former opponent whom she defeats and spares. Later recommends him to Vic as a prospective crewmate 606 607.
- Yamato — Fellow Thunder God Pirates combatant and closely matched sparring partner; defeats Rebecca by one move under Titan Island’s restrictive gravity 721.
- Straw Hat Pirates — Protects them on Vic’s orders, intervening against Aokiji, CP0, and Doflamingo when their lives are threatened 779 781 782.
