Background / History
Childhood and the Loss of His Family
Aoki grew up in an orphanage, where his intelligence and exceptional learning ability earned him a reputation as a genius. Aoki Kenjo and Aoki Shion adopted him into their modest salaried household. Their affection gradually made him more outgoing, and when he was ten, they had another son, Aoki Tokikawa. Aoki adored his younger brother and completed the entire high-school curriculum through independent study 9.
On May 19, 1987, Aoki awakened Filth Attraction. Unaware of what the technique did, he used it without restraint and attracted a swarm of curses. His adoptive parents were killed in front of him. Tokikawa deliberately drew a curse away from the stunned Aoki, saving him at the cost of his own life. Sorcerers from Jujutsu High subsequently rescued Aoki 9.
Sorcerer Career and Disappearance
Driven by hatred, Aoki traveled internationally to study and improve his strength, eventually becoming a Grade 1 sorcerer. For his first commission after promotion, he brought a Grade 3 junior to exorcise what was supposed to be a Grade 2 cursed spirit 9.
The target had encountered one of Ryomen Sukuna’s fingers, becoming a special grade capable of Domain Expansion. Aoki survived with a severe chest wound, but his junior died saving him. Overwhelmed by guilt, he fled rather than return to Jujutsu High. He eventually collapsed in Kitano Village and awoke imprisoned in its basement 9.
Imprisonment and Meeting Amaha
When ten-year-old Igarashi Amaha became his fellow prisoner, Aoki introduced him to cursed energy, cursed techniques, and the distinction between sorcerers and ordinary humans. He also treated Amaha’s injured arm and helped him obtain cursed spirits to capture and consume 3 6 7.
Aoki’s technique became central to their escape preparations. By August 13, 2000, it was supplying Amaha with roughly two Grade 4 cursed spirits each day. However, the supply depended on available spirits; Aoki could not simply produce more on demand 7 11.
After discussing his past, Aoki began openly treating Amaha as his little brother. He offered combat guidance in exchange for being called “big brother,” then recommended training suited to Amaha’s preference for speed, concentrated explosive power, and blades 10.
Sacrifice
Following another torture session, Amaha was dying without a cursed spirit to sustain his recovery. Aoki offered his own life as an alternative. He acknowledged his ruined physical condition and explained that he sometimes confused Amaha with Tokikawa, refusing to let another talented child die beside him 13 14.
Aoki embraced Amaha and allowed him to bite his throat. Before dying, he urged Amaha to carry him out and confront the cruel world. His death supplied Amaha’s fifth pawn, unlocking Crimson Owl and triggering the transformation that broke his restraints. Amaha escaped Kitano Village carrying Aoki’s body on August 15, 2000 14 15.
Kenjaku’s Possession
Aoki’s body later appeared alongside Mahito, plotting to exploit Rika Orimoto. During the Ginza conflict, the figure using his body unleashed Filth Attraction Calamity-Descent and continued addressing Amaha as his younger brother. The impersonation ended when Amaha openly identified him as Kenjaku 63 68 69.
Kenjaku used Aoki’s body and technique in a coordinated attempt to dissolve Amaha’s cursed technique. Although initially successful, the attack ultimately enabled Amaha to awaken an even stronger technique. After defeating the allied cursed spirits, Amaha forced Kenjaku to his knees and demanded Aoki’s body back; Hajime Kashimo interrupted before the confrontation was resolved 74 75 81 82 116.
Kenjaku later explicitly confirmed that he had possessed Aoki Akawa and accessed his memories 116.
Later Life
In the side story, Aoki is alive, married, and raising his daughter, Aoki Yuka, affectionately called Natsu-chan. He teaches at Jujutsu High, where Geto’s educational reforms and Megumi’s assistance have reduced his workload 132.
During a visit to Amaha’s home, the two share dinner and drinks while recalling their first summer together. Aoki credits Amaha with saving him, while Amaha insists the reverse is true. Aoki ends the discussion by reaffirming that they are brothers. The circumstances of his return are not explained in the side story 132.
Appearance
- During imprisonment: Severely emaciated, with skeletal arms, lifeless eyes, and a hoarse voice. His frailty becomes increasingly noticeable as Amaha prepares their escape 3 7 10.
- Chest injury: Bears a gruesome, collapsed chest wound from the mission that killed his junior 9 14.
- Under Kenjaku’s possession: Initially appears as a thin man; activating Filth Attraction Calamity-Descent rapidly shrivels his limbs and returns his body to a skeletal state 63 68.
Personality
Aoki’s early identity centers on intelligence and academic promise, but repeated losses turn that pride into bitter self-mockery. He calls himself a failed genius and blames himself for both his family’s deaths and his junior’s sacrifice. His continued imprisonment is rooted not only in physical captivity but also in his inability to face those memories; he admits fearing death because he might encounter the people he believes he failed 9.
With Amaha, his withdrawn manner gives way to teasing, sharp observations, and persistent attempts to claim an older-brother role. Beneath the jokes, he is protective: he worries over Amaha’s injuries, helps sustain his recovery, and ultimately gives his life for him 6 10 13 14.
By the side story, Aoki is comfortable joking about family and work. Rather than treating their bond as a debt requiring repayment, he tells Amaha that being brothers matters more than deciding who saved whom 132.
Abilities & Skills
Filth Attraction
A support-oriented cursed technique that attracts cursed spirits of a specified grade 3 10.
- Supplies weaker spirits that Aoki can exorcise or give Amaha to capture 3 6 7.
- Depends on spirits being available nearby; Aoki tells Amaha to wait for new ones to form 7.
- At its uncontrolled awakening, attracts curses with a strength comparable to a Special Grade Cursed Object 9.
- Does not inherently subjugate or command the spirits it attracts, as Mahito points out 63.
Learning Ability and Combat Training
Aoki possesses exceptional academic and practical learning ability, allowing him to develop Grade 1 combat strength despite his technique’s limited direct offensive capability 9 10.
- Studied combat methods internationally and selected approaches suited to a sorcerer’s technique 10.
- Recommended Ye Qingtian in Fochuan, Yang City, Hua Capital, for Amaha’s martial-arts training, and identified Malaga, Spain, as a destination for blade training 10.
- Provided basic treatment for Amaha’s injured arm and helped him coat his teeth in cursed energy to capture a Grade 4 spirit 3 7.
Domain Expansion: Filth Attraction Calamity-Descent
Demonstrated by Kenjaku while possessing Aoki, this domain spreads black cursed seals across hundreds of meters and brings forth masses of cursed spirits 68 69.
- Resurrected 57 special grades and restored Mahito from his remains 68.
- Can be expanded only once every thousand years, according to its user 68.
- Its maximum-output activation rapidly withered Aoki’s body and produced an aura of death, although the possessed body continued fighting afterward 68 80.
- Kenjaku originally intended to kill Yuta and Rika, then use the domain to impose a binding vow on the Queen of Curses 68.
Cursed Technique Dissolution — Under Possession
Kenjaku devised a way to dissolve Amaha’s cursed technique with Mahito’s knowledge of the human body and assistance from the other cursed spirits 74.
- Kenjaku admitted that he could not accomplish the dissolution alone 74.
- The attack removed Amaha’s resurrection and time Reversal abilities rather than temporarily sealing them 75.
- Amaha subsequently recovered and awakened a stronger technique, turning the plan into a major setback for Kenjaku 81 116.
Relationships
