Appearance

  • White hair and azure eyes: His white hair is singled out at his introduction, while his blue eyes are visible behind his sunglasses 24 26.
  • Height: Described as over 190 centimeters tall 110.
  • Eyewear: Wears round sunglasses as a student, white bandages over his eyes when meeting Yuta, and a blindfold during his later teaching career 24 61 91.
  • Clothing: Wears a Jujutsu High uniform, but changes into clothing resembling Toji’s before allowing Sukuna’s incarnation 91 127.
  • Incarnated appearance: Sukuna’s characteristic black markings spread across his face during their combined battle against Amaha 127.

Personality

Gojo is boastful, mischievous, and intensely competitive. As a student, he dismisses other members of the Three Great Families as unimpressive beside himself and eagerly volunteers to fight Amaha to demonstrate his superiority. His rivalry later extends to teaching: he recruits Yuji partly because he wants a student capable of beating Amaha’s pupils 24 27 92.

His friendships are marked by teasing, physical roughhousing, and elaborate attempts to avoid work. He tries to draw on Amaha’s face inside Unlimited Void, feigns illness to leave student protection to Geto, and becomes genuinely alarmed when his friends threaten his treasured Digimon discs 54 86 110.

His attitude toward human life is more complicated than his behavior toward students suggests. The narration describes him as naturally indifferent to life, and he accepts Amaha’s killings after learning that the victims were criminals. Nevertheless, he opposes Yuta’s execution, saves Yuji from the same fate, and commits to evacuating civilians before Sukuna’s revival 34 61 91 113.

Beneath his flippancy, Gojo is deeply loyal. He tells Aman that Amaha already has friends and students behind him rather than needing reconciliation with his biological family. His decision to become Sukuna’s vessel is explicitly explained as an attempt to fulfill his best friend’s wish, made with absolute confidence in himself 118 130.

Abilities & Skills

Six Eyes

An inherited Gojo Clan trait described as appearing only once every hundred years 25.

  • Allows him to rapidly examine an opponent’s movements and identify openings, as demonstrated against Amaha’s flaming blades 53.
  • Assists Sukuna’s perception and reactions while Sukuna inhabits his body 127.

Limitless

Gojo’s innate technique provides a neutral defensive state and the attraction and repulsion effects of Blue and Red 46.

  • Neutral defense: Approaching objects become progressively slower as they near him 32.
  • Continuous protection: By the one-year transition, he maintains it at all times 48.
  • Restraint: He uses Limitless to immobilize Amaha briefly before striking him repeatedly 54.
  • Early limitation: Before his awakening, maximum-output Blue prevents him from simultaneously maintaining neutral Limitless 28.
  • Counters: Domain Amplification can neutralize the technique sufficiently to permit contact. Ryu attempts this in Shibuya, though Gojo repels his fist and relocates 123.
  • Cursed-tool threat: Amaha’s use of the Inverted Spear forces Gojo to repel him immediately rather than rely on his usual defense 54.

Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue

The strengthened attraction aspect of Limitless 46.

  • Uses maximum output to contest Amaha’s large cursed-energy cannon 28.
  • Can be activated under close-range pressure; Gojo blasts Amaha away while his head is being driven along the ground 53.

Cursed Technique Reversal: Red

A repulsive application created by feeding the positive energy of Reverse Cursed Technique into Limitless 46.

  • Blasts Toji into a building despite Toji blocking with the Inverted Spear 46.
  • Repels Amaha when he attempts a close-range cursed-tool attack 54.
  • Can be countered: Amaha freezes a fired Red into a large sphere of ice 54.

Hollow Purple

A destructive attack formed by merging Blue and Red 54.

  • Used against Amaha during their rematch 54.
  • Amaha’s Parallel: Piece Summons—“Authority” breaks through it, demonstrating that the attack is not unbeatable 54.
  • Sukuna also uses Hollow Purple after incarnating in Gojo, including a fully chanted attack identified as operating at 200 percent 129.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Gojo produces positive energy by multiplying negative cursed energy, allowing him to regenerate injuries 46.

  • Awakens it while concentrating entirely on healing after Toji’s throat attack 46.
  • Can accelerate recovery from cursed technique burnout; the stated shortest interval is ten minutes 55.
  • Works alongside Sukuna’s healing after Amaha cuts their shared body through the waist 129.

Domain Expansion: Unlimited Void

A closed-barrier domain that floods its target’s mind with information, overwhelming the brain and preventing bodily movement 54 55.

  • Manifested with crossed fingers and a cosmic-looking interior 54.
  • Initially leaves Amaha motionless, but Amaha’s exceptional information-processing capacity allows him to move again 54 55.
  • Can be broken through a domain clash; Amaha’s counter-expansion destroys both barriers 55.
  • Gojo proposes using a brief expansion to save Shibuya’s civilians, but Amaha intervenes before he completes it 125.

Mobility, Combat, and Barriers

  • High-speed relocation: Teleports out of Yaga’s office, arrives suddenly beside Megumi, and repositions during combat 60 91 123.
  • Aerial movement: Fights Amaha repeatedly in midair and remains airborne during later confrontations 53 54 110.
  • Close combat: Combines punches, throws, and cursed techniques; uses Playful Cloud against Amaha’s flaming swords 53.
  • Curtains: Despite joking that he cannot construct one, he successfully erects a Curtain after Geto reprimands him 56.

Equipment & Possessions

  • Playful Cloud — Special Grade three-section staff used during his rematch with Amaha 53.
  • Digimon discs — Treasured possessions that his friends threaten to destroy to stop his teasing. A later fight over a disc earns both Gojo and Geto punishment from Yaga 86 103.

History

Student Years and Amaha’s Arrival

Gojo is introduced as a second-year student alongside Suguru Geto and Shoko. Amaha’s arrival immediately establishes a rivalry: he gives Gojo sweets while introducing himself as a classmate stronger than him. During Yaga’s assessment, Amaha exploits time manipulation and Gojo’s inability to combine maximum-output Blue with neutral Limitless 24 25 27 28.

Their friendship nearly collapses when records portray Amaha as a mass murderer. Gojo initially confronts him, then insists that their judgment must be missing something. After Amaha explains that his victims were curse users, traffickers, drug dealers, and their accomplices, Gojo and Geto apologize 29 34.

Star Plasma Vessel Mission

Yaga assigns Gojo, Geto, and Amaha to guard Riko Amanai for Tengen’s assimilation. Gojo helps protect her during the journey, including the Okinawa trip, and keeps Limitless active while threats remain 39 41 43.

Upon reaching Jujutsu High’s barrier, Toji ambushes Gojo and stabs him through the chest. Gojo survives the subsequent attack by awakening Reverse Cursed Technique, then returns to fight with Red. Their confrontation ends with Toji mortally wounded; before dying, Toji tells Gojo that his child will eventually be sold to the Zenin Clan 45 46 48.

Special Grade and Reform

By his third year, Gojo is officially listed as a Special Grade sorcerer. On June 23, 2007, he, Geto, and Amaha seal a shared promise to change the jujutsu world with a fist bump 49 57.

After Amaha’s next major awakening, Gojo challenges him again. Their spar escalates through Playful Cloud, Red, Hollow Purple, and Unlimited Void. Amaha resists the domain’s information overload and counters with another expansion, leaving Gojo questioning his opponent’s unusually rapid recovery 53 54 55.

Teaching and Protecting Students

As an adult, Gojo works with Geto to nurture new sorcerers. He prevents Yuta Okkotsu’s execution and encourages him to attend Jujutsu High, arguing that learning to use his curse could allow him to help others rather than remain isolated 58 61.

He later accepts Megumi’s request to spare Yuji Itadori. Gojo offers Yuji a place at the school and a plan to consume Sukuna’s remaining fingers, then becomes his assigned teacher. His protective role also brings him into conflict with Gakuganji over the conservatives’ involvement in sending Yuji’s group against the Cursed Womb “Daiten” 91 92 104.

During the Ginza crisis, Gojo identifies the use of Filth Attraction Calamity, announces that civilians have been evacuated, and leads the sorcerers into battle 68.

Shibuya and Sukuna’s Incarnation

Before Shibuya, Gojo agrees to cooperate with Amaha’s willingness to let Sukuna revive while arranging to protect civilians. When the incident begins, the enemy demands that Gojo enter alone, and Yaga sends him out from Jujutsu High 113 120.

Underground, he fights Ryu Ishigori, who uses Domain Amplification against Limitless. When a train releases a thousand transfigured humans into the crowd, Gojo prepares a brief Unlimited Void, but Amaha instead destroys the attackers with his own domain 123 125.

Gojo subsequently allows Sukuna to incarnate in him. He retains his will, actively assists Sukuna, and warns Amaha that their fight will not be merciful. After Amaha bisects their body, Gojo and Sukuna concentrate on Reverse Cursed Technique while Sukuna restarts his incarnation 127 129. The author clarifies that Gojo undertook this risk to help fulfill Amaha’s wish rather than because he had helplessly lost control 130.

Post-Shibuya

Gojo appears alive at a Hokkaido beachfront gathering with Amaha, Geto, and their students. He reminisces about their school years and the disappearance of Sukuna and Kenjaku, while Amaha jokes about having cut him in half. Their banter ends when Geto orders them to join the meal 131.

Relationships

  • Igarashi Amaha — Best friend and recurring rival. Their competition spans combat, games, and student training; Gojo later becomes Sukuna’s vessel to help fulfill Amaha’s wish 25 54 92 125 130.
  • Suguru Geto — Longstanding friend, classmate, and fellow teacher. Frequently acts as the exasperated disciplinarian of their trio, though he also joins their roughhousing and reform ambitions 26 57 86.
  • Shoko Ieiri — School friend and an early reference point for Reverse Cursed Technique. Gojo admits that he could not understand the explanations of the one person around him who could use it before his own awakening 25 46.
  • Masamichi Yaga — Teacher and later principal. Repeatedly disciplines Gojo for fighting, neglecting responsibilities, and avoiding assignments 27 60 103 120.
  • Yuji Itadori — Assigned student. Gojo saves him from immediate execution and recruits him into Jujutsu High, while also viewing him as a potential advantage in his rivalry with Amaha 91 92.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Student whose request helps determine Yuji’s survival. Megumi considers Amaha more reliable than Gojo and openly challenges Gojo’s claim to be the strongest teacher 91.
  • Yuta Okkotsu — Student whose execution Gojo prevents. Yuta ultimately chooses Amaha as his personal teacher, frustrating Gojo’s competitive teaching plans 61 62 92.
  • Toji Fushiguro — Opponent whose near-fatal attack triggers Gojo’s Reverse Cursed Technique awakening. Entrusts information about his child’s impending sale to the Zenin Clan to Gojo before dying 45 46 48.
  • Sukuna — Willingly accepted incarnated presence. Gojo cooperates with him against Amaha while retaining his own consciousness 127.
  • Yoshinobu Gakuganji — Political antagonist. Gojo confronts him over conservative interference with his students and warns that the changing jujutsu world will overwhelm his resistance 104.

Notable Quotes

“But being alone is lonely. You've been cursed, but if you use it differently, you can help others. Go learn how to use your power.” 61

“Let's change this rotten world!” — With Suguru Geto, inviting Amaha to join their promise 57

“Although I'll retain my will, that will only let me remember you. It won't make me show you any mercy. So do everything you can to stay alive. Right now, I am Sukuna!” 127

Trivia

  • Gojo enjoys sweets enough to ignore Amaha’s initial claim of superiority while staring at his gift bag 25.
  • His enthusiasm for fictional monsters carries into missions: he debates Charizard against Greymon and asks whether Ryu’s head-mounted cannon can use Charizard’s Flamethrower 39 123.
  • The side story is titled “Two years after the Shibuya Incident,” but its dialogue calls Gojo forty and says he has known Amaha for over twenty years, conflicting with the earlier age listings 58 111 131.
