Background / History
Mū’s student and Iwagakure’s succession problem
Ōnoki studied under Mū and inherited Dust Release as the Tsuchikage’s hallmark technique. His early experiences included meeting Hashirama Senju and being overwhelmingly defeated by Madara Uchiha—memories that continued to shape his assessment of Wood Release and Susanoo decades later 4 5 81 116.
By the opening war, Ōnoki feared that Iwagakure lacked a suitable younger generation to inherit its leadership. He had considered appointing Kitsuchi if necessary, but his son could not learn Dust Release. Reports of sixteen-year-old Didaze’s long-range Explosion Release convinced him that a better successor might have appeared 4 5.
Recruiting and preparing Didaze
Ōnoki summoned Didaze after reading his battlefield report and offered instruction in weight-altering techniques and Dust Release in exchange for spreading long-range Explosion Release. When Didaze explained that the technique was not yet safe to teach, Ōnoki instead made the instruction conditional on wartime achievements. He also assigned his own secretary and bodyguard, Kōdo, to protect Didaze at the front 5.
Following Didaze’s victories, Ōnoki explicitly began preparing him to become Tsuchikage. He granted access to the Scroll of Seals, shared his personal Dust Release training notes, appointed him to the village’s senior leadership, and delegated work that would otherwise have gone to Kōdo 31 32 53 64 76.
Nanako and the first Konoha settlement
Ōnoki welcomed Nanako Uzumaki as both a vulnerable child and a prospective sealing specialist. He became furious upon learning that Kusagakure had exploited her healing ability. After discovering that Didaze had already destroyed the village, he turned his attention to preventing other powers from using the incident against Iwagakure 30 31.
He accepted Didaze’s proposal to exchange a nominal surrender to Konoha for practical benefits. When Kitsuchi opposed the ceasefire, Ōnoki personally visited the front and compelled him to withdraw. The resulting settlement secured five A-rank sealing techniques and a fifty-million-ryō payment from Konoha, despite the written agreement presenting Iwagakure as the surrendering party 31 32 34.
War against Kumogakure and Kirigakure
Ōnoki authorized Didaze to negotiate with Kirigakure over Kusagakure and to bomb the village if negotiations failed. He based the plan on Didaze’s aerial mobility, Kirigakure’s limited anti-air capabilities, and the weaknesses of its jinchūriki 52.
When Kumogakure and Kirigakure advanced together, Ōnoki led eight thousand ninja toward the border. He and Didaze opened the battle with an aerial ambush that killed more than a thousand enemy ninja. During the fighting, he repeatedly used Dust Release to protect Han and pressure the enemy Kage 65 66 67 70.
After Kirigakure fled, Didaze persuaded him that pursuing the Third Raikage would cost too many lives and create further hostility. Ōnoki withdrew instead. He subsequently helped subdue the Six-Tails for sealing into Didaze and carried the exhausted Nanako to the hospital 71 72.
At the Five Kage Summit, Ōnoki refused to surrender the Six-Tails or Kirigakure’s captured Ninja Blades. Kirigakure ultimately agreed to pay two hundred million ryō to recover the Three-Tails 78.
Renewed war and retirement
Ōnoki ordered preparations for another war after Hatake Sakumo’s defection weakened Konoha. He later assigned Didaze to command the Konoha front while other forces faced Kumogakure 96 100.
News of Nanako’s Wood Release awakening prompted him to arrange a replacement defender for Iwagakure and travel to the battlefield. Initially imagining power comparable to Hashirama’s, he accepted Didaze’s warning that a bloodline ability did not automatically confer its greatest historical user’s strength 113 116.
During the renewed fighting, Ōnoki devastated Konoha’s army with regenerating stone golems and Dust Release, forcing its retreat. He later joined Didaze in accepting Konoha’s surrender and withdrawal terms 128 129 136.
When Didaze proposed destroying Konoha and finally taking office, Ōnoki convened the senior leadership. Despite lingering fear associated with Madara, he welcomed the prospect of retirement. After Konoha’s defeat and annexation, he personally placed the Tsuchikage’s hat on Didaze 196 205.
Parallel-world counterpart
The older Ōnoki encountered in the so-called “future world” belongs to a parallel world, rather than simply being the original Ōnoki at a later date. In that world, Didaze had died protecting him, and Kōdo had died during the battle that killed the Third Raikage. Ōnoki regarded that victory as the beginning of Iwagakure’s prolonged decline 153 154 155 170.
Upon recognizing the visiting Didaze, he offered to retire immediately and make him Tsuchikage. Didaze declined because he intended to return home, but gave him a complete collection of the Land of Whirlpools’ sealing techniques 153 154 155.
With Didaze’s assistance, Ōnoki persuaded Deidara to return to Iwagakure. He annihilated Deidara’s C2, C3, and C4 techniques in a demonstration, securing his promise to study Dust Release and stop defecting. He then reinstated Deidara as a Chunin and required him to rebuild his village mission record 159 163 164.
Ōnoki openly defended Deidara against Gaara at the subsequent summit. He was later selected as supreme commander of the Five Great Shinobi Villages, supported by his own seniority and strength as well as Didaze’s presence and knowledge of Obito 165 166 169.
Appearance
- Short stature: Even standing on his office chair, he remains shorter than Didaze and resorts to floating to address him 30.
- Aged features: His face is wrinkled, and he has a beard that he frequently strokes 30 76.
- White hair: Explicitly noted when Didaze agrees to relieve him of the Tsuchikage’s workload 196.
Personality
Ōnoki places Iwagakure’s security and advancement above reputation or diplomatic appearances. He accepts a surrender that brings material gains, recruits useful expertise from captured missing-nin, and authorizes ruthless attacks when he believes his village has the advantage. His senior council is formally consultative, but his supporters hold enough seats to make its decisions largely reflect his wishes 31 34 52 64.
He is protective and generous toward promising younger ninja. He tells Didaze to prioritize survival even over winning the war and changes academy policy to help Nanako integrate into village life. His support is also strategic: he deliberately cultivates bonds between future leaders and valuable specialists 5 31 35 79.
Although quick to bristle at disrespect, Ōnoki generally separates irritation from judgment. He ignores the Third Raikage’s taunts, recognizes Fugaku’s attempt to unsettle him, and accepts corrections from Didaze when his admiration for Hashirama clouds his reasoning 67 77 116 202.
Abilities & Skills
Dust Release
Ōnoki combines earth-, wind-, and fire-nature chakra into Dust Release, a kekkei tōta whose annihilating power exceeds ordinary bloodline-limit techniques 5 81.
- Detachment of the Primitive World Technique: His principal attack, used against enemy Kage, tailed beasts, summons, and massed troops 66 72 125.
- Large-scale output: An Ultimate Detachment attack measuring dozens of meters across consumes nearly a third of his chakra, overwhelms the Third Mizukage’s Great Waterfall Technique, and kills roughly two to three hundred ninja 65.
- Defensive interception: Annihilates Deidara’s C2: Dragon, C3 No. 18, and C4: Karura before they can harm him 163 164.
- Accuracy limitations: Mobile Kage-level opponents can evade ordinary shots; large targets and distracted enemies are easier to hit 67 72 129.
- Space–time countermeasure: Minato redirects an attack with Flying Thunder God: Guiding Thunder, although the shadow clone performing it is destroyed 125.
- Truth-Seeking Orb limitation: Cannot damage Obito’s Sword of Amenonuhoko because the weapon’s Truth-Seeking Orb composition negates ordinary ninjutsu, including Dust Release 217.
Weight Manipulation and Flight
Ōnoki uses the Added-Weight Rock Technique and Light-Weight Rock Technique, both described as techniques closely associated with the Tsuchikage 5.
- Flight: Uses Light-Weight Rock to float, travel, and command troops from the air 5 65.
- Amplified strikes: Increases his arm’s weight several dozenfold when reprimanding Kitsuchi 32.
- Rock Fist combination: Combines Added-Weight Rock with the Rock Fist Technique, increasing its weight over a hundredfold and overpowering Tsunade in a direct clash during his younger years 127.
- Energy conservation: Sometimes rides Didaze’s Clay Giant Bird rather than spend chakra and stamina flying independently 65.
Earth Release Golems
Ōnoki can summon and control numerous stone giants, including an enlarged version dozens of times larger than his ordinary golems 128 129.
- Army suppression: Deploys dozens of golems against Konoha’s forces 128.
- Regeneration: Reassembles shattered golems by making them absorb nearby rocks 128.
- Terrain efficiency: Rocky terrain makes summoning inexpensive; sustained control accounts for most of the chakra cost 129.
- Replaceable constructs: Counters Minato transporting a giant golem away by dismissing it and summoning another 129.
Chakra Sensing and Technical Instruction
- Detects the powerful presences fighting at Didaze’s house before Kōdo notices them 90.
- Identifies Wood Release’s vitality in Nanako’s chakra through direct examination 116.
- Recognizes Dust Release within Didaze’s new clay bombs, then notices that the result differs from his own technique 127 128.
- Teaches Nanako the hand seals for the Wood Clone Technique; this instruction does not establish that he can personally use Wood Release 131.
Tactical Judgment
- Plans aerial operations around enemy detection ranges, anti-air weaknesses, and safe withdrawal routes 52 65.
- Warns Gari not to underestimate Minato’s intelligence and mobility 116.
- Exploits opponents’ divided attention, including targeting a restrained Kushina after recognizing Fugaku’s provocation 202.
- Avoids trading blows with the Third Raikage, recognizing that a single direct punch could kill him 66.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dust Release training notes: Personal instructional records shared with Kitsuchi and later Didaze 53.
- Scroll of Seals: Grants Didaze access to Iwagakure’s restricted techniques, including Mū’s techniques 32 59.
- Anbu authorization token: Gives Didaze authority to approach Anbu personnel while handling delegated work 76.
- Tsuchikage’s hat: Places it on Didaze during the Fourth Tsuchikage’s succession ceremony 205.
Relationships
- Mū — Teacher and predecessor. Ōnoki invokes Iwagakure’s future when he and Didaze excavate Mū’s grave 4 61.
- Didaze — Chosen successor and trusted military partner. Ōnoki supplies protection, restricted instruction, political authority, and ultimately the Tsuchikage position 5 53 64 205.
- Kitsuchi — Only son. Their relationship includes frequent arguments and physical reprimands, but Kitsuchi later shields him from Minato’s attacks 32 35 201.
- Kōdo — Chief secretary and Steel Release bodyguard. Ōnoki entrusts him with protecting Didaze and holding the border against the Third Raikage 5 116.
- Nanako Uzumaki — Protégée and prospective village leader. Ōnoki arranges her education and security, celebrates her development, and later takes an interest in her wedding to Didaze 31 33 116 170.
- Roshi — A strained subordinate relationship. Roshi resents Ōnoki for restricting him to the village until he can control his tailed beast 33.

- Kurotsuchi — Granddaughter. In the parallel world, she lives with him and objects when he offers the Tsuchikage position to Didaze 153 164.
- Madara Uchiha — The source of lasting psychological scars that influence Ōnoki’s reactions to Susanoo, Wood Release, and war against Konoha 27 116 196.
Notable Quotes

“It's best to follow the rules you set yourself. If you can't follow them, it's better to change them than break them.” 31
“A plan needs the strength to back it up, of course. It's only because you possess that strength that I dare propose such a bold plan.” 52
Trivia
- Didaze repeatedly breaks the Tsuchikage office window. Ōnoki first bans window entry and demands repairs, then pays Kōdo to add a dog hole to accommodate the habit 31 59 170.
- After retiring, Ōnoki enjoys the view through another broken window and jokingly suggests that Didaze make the opening larger next time 211.
- In the parallel world, massage is a required Anbu course because the elderly Ōnoki frequently strains his back. He conceals one such injury while demonstrating Dust Release to Deidara 164.
