Abilities & Skills
Medical Ninjutsu
Tsunade’s healing substantially shortens the recovery time of Konoha’s strongest fighters 17.
- Battlefield treatment: Restores Hatake Sakumo within days after his fight with the Third Kazekage, while Sunagakure requires one or two months to treat its own leader 17.
- Chakra Scalpel: Removes a small sample of her own cells and stores it in a sealing scroll for Orochimaru 195.
- Diagnostic sensitivity: Detects a faint trace of vitality in Nawaki and recognizes its connection to his potential Wood Release awakening 115.
- Anatomical precision: Strikes Root members to cause pain and unconsciousness without lasting injury 51.
Yin Seal and Regeneration
Releasing the Yin Seal supports rapid healing; the Strength of a Hundred Technique sustains her through otherwise fatal injuries 107 126.
- Restores her charred hand with Katsuyu’s assistance after she punches Roshi through his Lava Release Chakra Mode 107.
- Repairs extensive burns inflicted by Didaze’s Heavy Explosive Bomb 107.
- Allows her to continue pursuing Didaze despite repeated nearby bomb detonations 126.
- Limit: Repairing severe injuries consumes enormous amounts of chakra. After surviving the Heavy Explosive Bomb, she remains weak enough to require Orochimaru to carry her away 107.
Monstrous Strength and Taijutsu
Tsunade uses powerful punches and kicks to break defenses and interrupt enemy attacks 50 107 194.
- Golden Strength Fist: Strikes Roshi in the face, causing his forming Tailed Beast Bomb to explode inside his mouth 107.
- Heavenly Foot of Pain: Uses a forceful kick against Didaze and during her attempt to kill Danzō 126 194.
- Sends dozens of Root members flying with a single punch 50.
- Shatters Danzō’s newly acquired Wood Release shield and ultimately kills him with a final punch 194.
- Limits: Ōnoki’s weight-enhanced Rock Fist overpowers her punch. Her full-strength attacks also inflict little more than bruising on the Third Raikage 127 150.
Summoning: Katsuyu
Tsunade summons Katsuyu for healing, transportation, and acid attacks 104 107 125.
- Healing support: A small Katsuyu assists in restoring Tsunade’s burned hand 107.
- Acid attacks: Targets airborne opponents and corrodes the trees produced by Danzō’s Deep Forest Emergence 125 194.
- Protection: Moves forward to intercept Didaze’s C3 No. 18 while Jiraiya prepares Sage Mode 106.
- Mobility: Carries Hiruzen Sarutobi so he can keep pace with airborne enemies while attacking 125.
- Limit: Didaze’s injected nanoscale bombs destroy the summoned clone. Katsuyu Sage recalls its surviving fragments but loses about one percent of her body mass 125 126.
Barrier Ninjutsu
- Four Red Yang Formation: Maintains the barrier alongside Minato, Hiruzen, and Orochimaru during Iwagakure’s attack on Konoha 197.
- The four briefly repair a breach caused by Didaze’s bombs through a massive expenditure of chakra, but continued attacks force them to seek another defense 198.
Command and Combat Judgment
- Recognizes Didaze’s dangerous combination of kekkei genkai and tactical ability before fighting him personally 17.
- Runs toward Roshi when targeted by the Heavy Explosive Bomb, forcing Didaze to detonate it early rather than endanger his ally 107.
- Coordinates repeated attacks with Minato to occupy Ōnoki and deny him opportunities to use Dust Release 127.
- Evacuates Konoha’s shinobi before Didaze’s assault, then leads an army of forty thousand against Iwagakure 197 200.
Personality
Tsunade is outspoken and willing to oppose her own teacher when she considers his actions unjust. She rejects ancestral grievances as a reason to mistreat the Uchiha, insisting that they remain members of Konoha. Her intervention goes beyond protest: she personally removes Root from their compound while preventing the Uchiha from joining the fight and giving Danzō grounds to accuse them 48 49 50 51.
Her anger is especially intense when those close to her are threatened. She shatters Hiruzen’s desk after learning of Orochimaru’s reported death and later leaves the battlefield without permission when Nawaki disappears. Nevertheless, her eventual agreement to remove Hiruzen from office is reluctant; she initially hesitates because of his past service to Konoha 37 193 194.
She enjoys gambling, drinking, and hot springs. Her hospital work reduces the time available for gambling, while the Senju inheritance makes her losses financially manageable 48 50.
History
Sunagakure Front and Orochimaru’s Reported Death
Tsunade serves on the Sunagakure front with Hatake Sakumo and Jiraiya. Her medical treatment helps Sakumo return to battle much sooner than the Third Kazekage. When Sakumo is transferred to oppose Iwagakure, she warns him not to underestimate Didaze and remains behind to contain Sunagakure 17.
Hiruzen conceals Orochimaru’s reported death to avoid destabilizing the front, while Jiraiya supplies Tsunade with forged battle reports. Upon learning the truth, she destroys Hiruzen’s desk and attempts to punch him, but Jiraiya restrains her 27 37. She later questions whether Orochimaru could truly have died so easily; he eventually returns to Konoha alive 48 75.
Defense of the Uchiha Clan
Fugaku seeks Tsunade’s help after Danzō confines the Uchiha to their compound. She confronts Hiruzen and accuses Danzō of pursuing Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan and the Hokage position for personal gain 48.
When Root remains in place despite her ultimatum, Tsunade attacks its members. She refuses the Uchiha’s offer to join her, knowing their participation could be used against them. After she releases her Yin Seal and attacks Danzō, he orders Root to retreat 49 50 51.
The intervention wins Fugaku’s commitment to support her as the next Hokage. She continues defending the clan when renewed accusations damage its reputation, though her reassurances and Hiruzen’s public denial have little effect 50 85.
Support for Hatake Sakumo
During Danzō’s campaign to ruin Sakumo’s reputation, Tsunade and Jiraiya visit him and promise their support. Tsunade tries to disprove the rumors, but the harassment continues. Before attacking Danzō, Sakumo leaves a shadow clone with her and asks her to care for Kakashi 93 94.
Third Shinobi World War and Jiraiya’s Death
Tsunade fights alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru against Didaze and Roshi. She interrupts Roshi’s Tailed Beast Bomb, then narrowly survives Didaze’s Heavy Explosive Bomb through regeneration and Katsuyu’s healing 104 107.
After nanoscale bombs enter the Sannin’s bodies, using chakra threatens to detonate them. Jiraiya sacrifices himself to perform Reverse Summoning and send the others to Mount Myōboku. Tsunade witnesses his destruction and later mourns him after the bombs are removed 108 109 113.
She subsequently returns to the front with Hiruzen and Orochimaru. Following another disastrous defeat, Orochimaru knocks her unconscious and evacuates her through Reverse Summoning. Back in Konoha, she becomes withdrawn, showing little interest beyond checking Nawaki’s training 115 125 134.
Nawaki’s Death and Revenge
Tsunade encourages Nawaki to study Medical Ninjutsu after detecting the vitality needed for his potential Wood Release awakening. Later, he refuses her offer to accompany him to the Kirigakure front, leaving her uneasy 115 183.
Orochimaru’s letter reporting Nawaki’s disappearance prompts her to leave the Kumogakure battlefield immediately. Dan follows and agrees to accompany her even if killing Danzō makes them missing-nin. Orochimaru confirms Nawaki’s death and secures their cooperation in forcing Hiruzen from office 193 194.
The three attack Danzō together. Seeing his Wood Release reinforces Tsunade’s conviction that he is responsible. With Dan interfering and Orochimaru assisting, she breaks through his defenses, uses Katsuyu’s acid against his forest, and kills him 194.
Fourth Hokage and Konoha’s Surrender
Tsunade succeeds Hiruzen as the Fourth Hokage. She clears the Uchiha Clan’s name and moves its compound from the outskirts to Konoha’s central district 197 201.
When Iwagakure breaks its treaty and declares war, she prepares an evacuation and helps maintain the Four Red Yang Formation. Orochimaru then reincarnates Hashirama using a connection established through transplanted cells she previously supplied. Hashirama stays to face Didaze while Tsunade and the other leaders rejoin their army 195 197 198.
Tsunade leads forty thousand shinobi into battle, but Iwagakure concentrates its strongest close-range fighters against her. Fugaku intervenes to save her from Roshi, yet Han, Roshi, and Kōdo continue suppressing her despite her regeneration 200 201.
After losing to Didaze, Hashirama urges her to surrender under an agreement sparing everyone except Hiruzen. Tsunade chooses to leave rather than enter Iwagakure’s service. She attempts to pass the Hokage position to Minato, but Didaze abolishes the office. She and Dan depart to wander the world, making her Konoha’s shortest-serving and final Hokage 204 206.
Alternate-World Counterpart
The Tsunade encountered in Didaze’s future-world journey belongs to a separate world, not simply the later history of his own timeline 154.
- Didaze’s arrival: Learns from Yamato that the reappearance of the Dragon Vein establishes the distinction between their worlds. Naruto suggests Didaze could help against Akatsuki 154.
- Five Kage Summit: Reveals that Akatsuki’s leader possesses the Rinnegan and that Jiraiya escaped him only after losing an arm. Unlike the Jiraiya of Didaze’s original world, this Jiraiya is still alive 167.
- Alliance leadership: Receives Gaara’s support for command of the Allied Shinobi Forces during the Kage’s debate 169.
- Fourth Shinobi World War: Fights Obito alongside Mei Terumi and Gaara. Obito holds his own against all three before becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki and attacking the Five Kage 216 217.
