History
Formation and the East Blue
Kazu proposed both “Kazu Pirates” and “Blond Hair Pirates,” while Carlmand suggested “Dream Pirates.” Kazu rejected Carlmand’s choice and named the crew after his own hair. The name also echoed his father’s Whitebeard Pirates: he jokingly reasoned that hair sat higher than a beard, fitting his intention to surpass Whitebeard 8.
The two made their flag together, with Carlmand drawing the skull. They then sailed into Foosha Village and moored beside the Red Force, bringing Kazu into confrontation with Shanks. Later, Kazu encountered Monkey D. Dragon at sea and challenged him as well 8 21.
At Loguetown, Kazu fought Aokiji while Carlmand battled Smoker. Kazu eventually withdrew with Carlmand using his spatial ability. The confrontation forced Marine Headquarters to reassess the crew, and the Marines subsequently offered Kazu a Shichibukai position 37 40 43.
Grand Line Recruitment and Alabasta
On Bird Island, Nico Robin sought out Kazu because of his sympathy for Ohara and hostility toward the World Government. She asked to join, and Kazu established that crewmates would be treated as family: betrayal was forbidden, and outsiders would not be allowed to harm them 48 49.
After their stay in Alabasta, Kazu gave King Cobra a Den Den Mushi and placed the kingdom under the crew’s protection. The crew then headed toward Jaya to obtain the Rumble-Rumble Fruit for Behrens. Kazu also promised Carlmand priority if they found a Mythical Zoan 64.
Water 7, Saierde, and Sabaody
The crew spent a year living in Water 7 before departing aboard the Divine Dragon. Kazu left their villa key with Iceburg so they would retain somewhere to stay on future visits 78.
In Saierde, Kazu coordinated with Dragon so the Revolutionary Army could take over three days after the pirates struck against the king and nobles. The rulers were killed, and local residents thanked the crew for ending their oppression 83 85.
At Sabaody, Kazu publicly killed Saint Charlos and confronted Kizaru. He subsequently opened a passage through the Red Line measuring 150 meters high and 300 meters wide, creating another route into the New World 107 112.
New World Voyages and Dressrosa
The crew’s reputation initially frightened the inhabitants of Mukelong, a town under Whitebeard’s protection. Kazu promised that they had come only to experience local life and would leave peacefully. Whitebeard, meanwhile, hurried toward the island after learning of their arrival 116 117.
During a later expedition, Kazu killed the giant lanternfish containing Alchemi, freed the island, and transported it to Mukelong. The crew entered its hidden laboratory under his spatial protection and subsequently possessed Pure Gold 136 161.
Law joined the crew to obtain Kazu’s help against Doflamingo. In Dressrosa, Kazu immediately incapacitated Trebol’s group, while Carlmand demonstrated the ability to overpower Doflamingo in close combat. Following the Donquixote Family’s defeat, Kazu donated its confiscated treasure to Dressrosa’s reconstruction 164 166 168 179.
Totto Land, Zou, and Wano
After Dressrosa, the crew sailed toward Totto Land. Their confrontation with the Big Mom Pirates ended with Galette changing sides. Katakuri acknowledged her departure after Kazu pressured him, and Kazu promised to protect her as one of his own 182 197 200.
On Zou, Kazu requested both a Mink recruit and a rubbing of the Mokomo Dukedom’s Poneglyph. Pedro accepted the recruitment request but deferred the Poneglyph decision until Nekomamushi returned and the dukes could discuss it 236.
In Wano, Orochi hoped to use the Blond Hair Pirates against Kaido. His plans collapsed when Kazu’s party forced its way into the shogun’s residence. Yamato later joined the crew and was warmly welcomed by its members 245 258.
Laugh Tale and the North Blue
The Divine Dragon departed Lodestar Island for Laugh Tale. After reaching the final island, the crew kept the nature of the One Piece secret despite worldwide curiosity 266 270.
During their subsequent North Blue voyage, Judge ordered Germa 66 to avoid confronting them—even if they destroyed Germa property. Reiju later boarded the Divine Dragon, where the crew’s kindness and a day-long welcome banquet contrasted sharply with the life she had left behind 277 282.
War with the World Government
Alarmed by Kazu’s defeat of Garp, Imu ordered the Marines’ strongest forces assembled to destroy the crew. The resulting expedition against Guderro Island included the Five Elders, Holy Knights, three Admirals, and Garp, while the Blond Hair Pirates stood alongside the Whitebeard Pirates 213 285.
Garp and the Admirals ultimately withdrew rather than continue serving as the Five Elders’ expendable fighters. The battle ended with devastating Marine losses and the deaths of the Five Elders, Holy Knights, and Cipher Pol elite forces. The two pirate crews celebrated together afterward 288 297.
The Blond Hair Pirates also fought during the final confrontation with Imu. After the World Government’s overthrow, Dragon publicly credited their indispensable contribution to establishing the new government 317 320.
Huaxia Empire
Returning to the East Blue, the crew took control of the Goa Kingdom and renamed it the Huaxia Empire. Neither the new government nor the Marines intervened. The pirates later gathered at Kazu’s temporary palace for Spring Festival, while Drew reported that statues for their memorial park were nearly finished 322.
Abilities and Resources
Spatial Mobility
Kazu’s spatial powers make the crew unusually difficult to surround, pursue, or trap 43 78 107.
- Teleports crewmates between locations, including directly from Alubarna’s palace to their ship 64.
- Stores belongings in his Independent Space 78.
- Moves enormous targets, including Alchemi and the Divine Dragon together 136.
- Protects the crew while passing through the Alchemi laboratory’s arrow traps 136.
Elite Combat and Training
Kazu personally develops his officers’ fighting abilities rather than relying on numbers 156 168 182.
- Trains Carlmand in hand-to-hand combat over two and a half years; Carlmand develops advanced Observation and Armament Haki, including Internal Destruction 168.
- Teaches Behrens to combine Armament Haki with lightning attacks 80.
- Begins Haki and close-combat training for Law, Dragon Girl, and Drew after leaving Dressrosa 182.
- Both Carlmand and Behrens awaken Conqueror’s Haki by the postwar banquet 297.
Detection and Counter-Surveillance
Kazu’s Space Perception and Behrens’s electromagnetic sensing complement their Observation Haki 200.
- Their combined surveillance is described as leaving no room for a spy aboard the crew’s ship 200.
- The Divine Dragon’s conspicuous appearance nevertheless makes sightings of the crew easy to identify 145.
Medical Support and Longevity
Makino’s Medicine-Medicine Fruit works alongside Law’s medical knowledge and Op-Op Fruit 177.
- Makino transforms ordinary objects into medicines; stronger effects require more time and stamina 121.
- Law provides examinations and treatment, including checking Hancock’s and Robin’s unborn children 322.
- The crew possesses Pure Gold and consequently shows little interest in the Op-Op Fruit’s Eternal Youth Surgery 161.
- Pure Gold does not make its wearers impossible to kill 161.
Ships and Property
- Divine Dragon — A luxurious flagship with recreational facilities and rooms for incoming members. Its size requires several ordinary berths 80 282.
- Water 7 villa — The crew’s residence for a year; its key is entrusted to Iceburg after their departure 78.
- Pirate flag — Created by Kazu and Carlmand on black cloth, with Carlmand responsible for drawing the skull 8.
Culture and Conduct
Kazu treats the core crew as family and makes mutual protection a condition of membership. Robin’s acceptance, Law’s welcome, and Reiju’s adjustment each emphasize the security and affection members find aboard the Divine Dragon 49 164 282.
The crew’s friendliness does not prevent its reputation from frightening civilians. In Saierde, the members recognize that even without putting on airs, they possess enough power to decide ordinary people’s lives. By their later West Blue voyage, however, their lack of reported burning, killing, or plundering encourages some beachgoers to remain despite their arrival 81 302.
- Welcome banquets are a recurring tradition for new members, including Law and Reiju 164 282.
- Red-light district visits are a running custom promoted by Carlmand, Behrens, and Drew; Law and Oulait are drawn into these outings 164 258.
- “Sailor” is identified as the crew’s song, which Drew teaches the Whitebeard Pirates after the war 297.
- “Invincible” is Kazu’s song, sung as other crews avoid the Divine Dragon following his victory over Garp 213.
- The crew does not consistently pursue a fixed itinerary. At one point, Kazu explicitly leaves their route to chance and has no intention of becoming Pirate King 143.
Relationships
- Whitebeard Pirates — Connected through Kazu’s relationship with his father, Whitebeard. The crews fight together at Guderro Island and share a postwar banquet 117 285 297.
- Revolutionary Army — Secret partners in political and financial operations. Their cooperation includes the Saierde takeover and Tesoro’s concealed support 83 220 221.
- Alabasta / King Cobra — Protected by the crew, with a direct Den Den Mushi contact provided for emergencies 64.
- Dressrosa / Riku Family — Grateful beneficiaries of the Donquixote Family’s defeat and Kazu’s reconstruction donation. Rebecca resolves to become a hero like him 179.
- Marines — Initially alternate between recruitment, surveillance, and allowing the crew into the New World to fight other pirates. They later participate in the attempted extermination campaign 43 99 144 213.
- World Government — Principal enemy. It raises bounties to attract rival attackers and later promotes the Red Hair Pirates to reduce the Blond Hair Pirates’ public exposure 113 273.
- Big Mom Pirates — Defeated rivals; Galette’s departure creates a lasting personal connection between the crews 197 222.
- Beasts Pirates / Kaido — Initially wary of the newly risen Emperor crew. Yamato’s eventual recruitment links Kaido’s family to Kazu’s crew 114 258.
- Germa 66 — Judge avoids direct conflict with the crew. Reports of cooperation circulate after Reiju joins, but the cited accounts present these as newspaper speculation 277 282.
