Background
Carlmand grew up in Nuka Town, where his father—a former pirate who had reached the New World—taught him martial arts and Haki. His father insisted that strength was necessary to fulfill his ambition of exploring the world and creating a world map. Before leaving home, Carlmand had been undefeated locally and was told that his abilities placed him among the East Blue’s strongest fighters 7.
Only days after setting sail, he encountered Kazu and tried to buy his ship. When a direct purchase failed, Carlmand proposed a duel: victory would let him buy the vessel, while defeat would place his life in Kazu’s hands 6 7.
Kazu decisively defeated him, first overcoming his physical attacks and Armament Haki, then overwhelming him with spatial attacks. Carlmand surrendered and accepted the position of navigator. Kazu treated his injuries and cooked a feast, quickly replacing Carlmand’s initial resentment with enthusiasm for life aboard the ship 7.
Personality
Carlmand is proud of his strength and particularly sensitive to being underestimated. His first bounty of one million Beli infuriates him because it fails to reflect his knowledge of Armament Haki. His later rivalry with Behrens is likewise fueled by differences in their bounties and opportunities to demonstrate their abilities 21 167 224.
Despite his complaints, he actively pursues improvement. He regularly asks Kazu for instruction, enjoys demanding close-range battles, and turns his disappointment over Robin’s lack of romantic interest into renewed training rather than pressuring her 8 50 51 52.
Kazu introduces Carlmand to brothels when he is initially inexperienced and nervous around women. He soon becomes an enthusiastic patron and begins introducing other crewmates to the same entertainment. His enjoyment can override his fighting spirit: Queen persuades him to stop their battle by offering women and drinks 11 12 34 118 254.
Carlmand’s bravado also makes him a frequent target of the crew’s jokes. He attempts to escape Kazu’s harsh sparring sessions through excuses and cheating, while his confidence against Garp leads him to badly underestimate the Marine’s speed 184 185 205 206.
Abilities & Skills
Navigation and Cartography
Carlmand serves as the Blond Hair Pirates’ navigator and regularly draws nautical charts 7 8.
- Uses maps to identify destinations, plot routes, and adjust the ship’s course 8 25.
- Handles course changes on Kazu’s orders during the pursuit of Germa 66’s Saint Germain 278.
- Has sufficient drawing skill to paint the crew’s skull emblem cleanly when Kazu’s own artistic ability proves inadequate 8.
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Carlmand specializes in close combat, building on his father’s instruction through years of training under Kazu 7 168.
- Defeats Mr. 1 after approximately half an hour of combat, finishing him with an Armament-coated punch 52.
- Kills a black bear with one punch and a tiger with a flying kick during a hunting contest 152.
- Moves too quickly for the naked eye to follow clearly when attacking Doflamingo 168.
- Uses Geppo to move through the air and continue pursuing opponents 169.
- Has very limited ranged offense, allowing Doflamingo to repeatedly delay his approach with awakened string attacks 169.
Chilly-Chilly Fruit
The Chilly-Chilly Fruit lowers the temperature of the surrounding space, freezing existing moisture rather than producing ice from nothing 121.
- Contact freezing: Can instantly inflict frostbite on contact; resisting it requires powerful Haki 121.
- Environmental freezing: Freezes seawater into platforms and battlefields, though Whitebeard’s tremors repeatedly destroy his work 121 125.
- Attrition: Forces opponents to expend stamina maintaining their body temperature, making prolonged battles increasingly favorable to him 168 251.
- Frost Fist: Combines his punches with extreme cold; used against Garp and Queen 205 251.
- Restraint: Holds Doflamingo in a tight embrace while lowering his temperature to −143 degrees 171.
- Group suppression: Freezes the men attacking Kazu during the seizure of Hiyori’s palanquin 243.
Compared with Aokiji, Carlmand freezes a smaller area more slowly but causes greater damage through low temperatures. Kazu theorizes that the fruit may have a limit around −200 degrees; this is an estimate, not a demonstrated maximum 121 168.
Haki
Carlmand eventually possesses all three documented types of Haki 292.
- Armament Haki: Uses hardening offensively and defensively, including covering the back half of his body while enduring Doflamingo’s attacks 7 171.
- Internal Destruction: Delivers penetrating force through defenses, injuring Doflamingo through his Shield White String 168 169.
- Observation Haki: Begins with sharpened senses and develops to a highly advanced level through training 25 168.
- Conqueror’s Haki: First erupts after his victory over Saturn. No subsequent coating technique is documented in the provided chapters 292.
Durability and Limitations
After obtaining his Devil Fruit, Carlmand prioritizes bodily toughness so he can endure attacks while cold gradually incapacitates his opponent 172 251.
- Trades direct blows with Queen on initially even terms 251.
- Relies on avoiding a decisive knockout; Garp defeats him with one Conqueror’s-coated punch after Carlmand misjudges his speed 205 206.
- Requires rescue after falling into the sea during that defeat; Drew retrieves him, and Law revives him with electrical treatment 206.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Formation of the Blond Hair Pirates
After joining Kazu, Carlmand proposes the name Dream Pirates, describing them as warriors pursuing their dreams. Kazu rejects it in favor of Blond Hair Pirates. Carlmand helps paint the flag and receives the honor of raising it for the first time 8.
In Loguetown, Carlmand gains the advantage against Smoker before Aokiji intervenes. Kazu interrupts Aokiji’s attack on him and resumes fighting the Admiral 36 37.
Grand Line Campaigns
| Event | Carlmand’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Baroque Works confrontation | Defeats Mr. 1 while Behrens handles the accompanying gunman 51 52. |
| Battle with the Whitebeard Pirates | Maintains an ice battlefield, providing footing for fighters such as Oulait and Vista 125. |
| Doflamingo confrontation | Wins the right to fight through rock-paper-scissors, overwhelms Doflamingo at close range, and eventually immobilizes him with extreme cold. Kazu confirms that Doflamingo remains alive afterward 167 168 169 171 172. |
| Whole Cake Island fighting | Attempts to intercept Katakuri but is stopped by Oven. His superior martial arts and Haki give him the advantage in their clash 192. |
| Garp’s pursuit | Volunteers to fight, is knocked unconscious with a single punch, and is rescued by Drew 205 206. |
| Wano | Freezes Hiyori’s attendants’ men, later fights Queen, and accepts Queen’s offer to settle matters over women and drinks 243 251 254. |
Battle Against the World Government
Carlmand selects Saint Saturn as his opponent after Kazu has already gravely injured the Elder. He attacks with Armament-coated fists and the full power of his Devil Fruit, progressively worsening Saturn’s condition through extreme cold 288 289 292.
Once Saturn’s blood circulation and movement have been severely impaired, Carlmand kills him by smashing his head with a full-power punch. Recognizing that he can personally defy the Celestial Dragons’ highest authorities breaks his mental restraints and triggers his Conqueror’s Haki 292.
Government Appointment
After removing a kingdom’s criminal royal family, Kazu appoints Carlmand to command the country’s entire external military force and maintain national stability. Carlmand eagerly accepts and promises to prevent foreign enemies from entering the country. Behrens receives responsibility for palace security, dividing their duties into external and internal defense 321.
Bounties
| Bounty / Standing | Details |
|---|---|
| 1,000,000 Beli | His first reported bounty; he protests that the Marines have overlooked his Armament Haki 21. |
| Fifth-highest in the crew | Falls from second place after other crewmates receive much larger bounties 114. |
| 630,000,000 Beli | His stated bounty before fighting Doflamingo; he hopes to exceed Behrens’s 1.188 billion Beli 167. |
| Later increase; amount unspecified | A subsequent rise encourages him to challenge Garp in hopes of gaining further recognition 205. |
