Background / History
Behrens grew up in an East Blue village whose residents supported themselves through fruit growing, fishing, and mountain hunting. A little over half a month before he met Kazu, Silco’s pirates destroyed the village, killing hundreds of people, including his parents. Behrens survived because he was away fishing; other survivors had also been fishing or hunting 28.
Several dozen survivors organized three groups to pursue the attackers. As the strongest among them, Behrens traveled alone so that he could move quickly. After more than half a month of searching, he encountered Kazu and recounted the destruction of his home 28.
Kazu persuaded him that strength was the best way to prevent another such tragedy. Behrens accepted this outlook and asked Kazu to train him. Despite being warned that the training would be harsh, he bowed and committed himself, joining the Blond Hair Pirates as their sniper 28 29.
Personality
Initially grief-stricken and inexperienced, Behrens finds a new purpose in becoming strong enough to protect the people close to him. After gaining the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, he is determined not to be left guarding the ship whenever a powerful enemy appears. Even much later, his memories of his hometown remain central to his resolve: he cannot recover his lost family, but he can protect the loved ones he may have in the future 28 68 292.
As his confidence grows, Behrens becomes boastful, theatrical, and eager to claim worthwhile opponents. He smiles at enemies before attacking, poses after victories, and competes with Carlmand over fights, bounties, and recognition. Their frequent insults and brawls coexist with a close friendship 79 80 98 224 322.
He also develops a strong taste for drinking, brothels, and shore leave after Carlmand introduces him to Red Romance. His playful streak extends beyond his own crew: on Zou, he deliberately tempts the on-duty Musketeers with wine and food. In battle, however, he feels no guilt about killing criminals such as Diamante after learning of their atrocities 34 170 229.
Abilities & Skills
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Behrens can generate, control, and transform into azure lightning. The fruit supports rapid movement, close-range combat, ranged attacks, and destructive area attacks 67 79 97.
- Lightning movement: Travels through the air as a lightning bolt, rapidly overtaking fleeing ships or repositioning beside opponents 79 96.
- Logia intangibility: Ordinary bullets pass through him harmlessly. Armament Haki can strike him, so he evades Gadeko’s coated punch rather than relying on intangibility 79 96.
- Electrical conditioning: Repeatedly tempers his body with lightning, strengthening his physique and throwing power 171.
- Collateral damage: His attacks are dangerous to nearby vessels. He practices in the sky to avoid damaging the Divine Dragon and is warned to be careful around the Polar Tang 159 160.
Named Techniques
| Technique | Description |
|---|---|
| Thunder Shot | Fires a lightning blast several meters wide from a revolver; destroys David Claude’s ship and everyone aboard 79. |
| Falling Thunder | Calls down a lightning bolt over ten meters thick, destroying the fleeing ship carrying Vice Captain Punk 80. |
| Thunder Battle Axe | A lightning-wreathed side kick used to launch Gadeko through the tavern wall 97. |
| Swift Thunder | A rapid combination of lightning movement, airborne kicks, and dual-revolver lightning bullets 97. |
| Thunderous Fist | Combines a lightning-covered fist with Armament Haki; overpowers Gadeko’s coated wolf claws and is later used against Marco 97 98 125. |
| Raigo | A descending lightning strike used to kill Gadeko. Against Diamante, Behrens uses a 100-million-volt version 98 169. |
| Thunder God | A blue lightning giant dozens of meters tall, with Behrens positioned inside its head; capable of a 100-million-volt discharge 126. |
| Thunder Prison | Forms a cage from lightning. Against Marco, Behrens dismantles Thunder God into the prison, avoiding a separate charge-up period 126. |
| Lightning spears | Thrown projectiles that preserve his marksmanship while exploiting his strengthened physique. He can coat a spear in Haki 126 171. |
| 80 Million Volts, Palm Lightning | A close-range palm discharge that shocks and numbs Smoothie while Behrens blocks her sword 192. |
| Thunder Explosion | Detonates embedded lightning spears simultaneously; used after piercing Saint Mars with at least five thousand spears 292 293. |
| Swift Thunder Groin Kick | A named attack used during a brawl with Carlmand 303. |
Haki
Observation Haki is Behrens’s early specialty; his Armament develops through Kazu’s instruction, while Conqueror’s Haki is confirmed much later 51 76 297.
- Observation: Reads incoming gunfire in sniper duels. Combined with his Devil Fruit, it detects concealed ninjas throughout the shogun’s residence; his later range covers an island 51 246 278.
- Armament: Uses hardening to reinforce his fist and block Smoothie’s sword with his arm 97 192.
- Advanced Armament: Knows flow and Internal Destruction, and can coat lightning attacks in Haki. Large-scale coating is limited by his reserves when first demonstrated 76 80.
- Conqueror’s: Awakening is acknowledged during the postwar celebration; no specific combat application is described there 297.
Marksmanship and Close Combat
Behrens fights as a mobile sniper rather than separating gunplay from martial arts. Kazu teaches him to treat pistols as parts of his body and bullets as extensions of it 29.
- Combines flying kicks, midair turns, and simultaneous shots from both hands 29.
- Uses Observation Haki to evade enemy bullets and create openings for return fire 51.
- Transitions from revolvers to lightning spears when his throwing strength makes them more powerful 171.
- Uses apparent weaknesses as bait: Thunder God’s size encourages Marco to approach, placing him within range of Thunder Prison 126.
Thunder Metallurgy
Behrens uses controlled lightning to shape Pure Gold into rings, including one sized for Whitebeard 138.
- Engraves Edward Newgate’s name inside Whitebeard’s ring.
- Produces personalized rings for the current crew.
- Returns the completed rings to Kazu for safekeeping until their intended wearers reach their peak strength 138.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Two pistols/revolvers — Purchased with several million Beli supplied by Kazu. They are powerful, sturdy enough for use as blunt weapons, and later serve as outlets for lightning ammunition 29 79 97.
- Camera — Readies it to photograph Kazu’s display in Alabasta, earning a promise to double his spending allowance 61.
- Personalized Pure Gold ring — One of the rings he crafts for the crew; entrusted to Kazu rather than worn immediately 138.
Relationships
- Kazu — Captain, mentor, and benefactor. Gives Behrens a new direction, funds his weapons, obtains his Devil Fruit, and teaches him combat and Haki. Behrens credits him with making it possible to protect his companions 28 29 67 76 98 292.
- Carlmand — Close friend and persistent rival. Introduces him to Red Romance; they later compete over opponents, prey, bounties, and status. Their arguments often become physical, but their friendship continues into Kazu’s imperial period 34 98 152 224 322.
- Drew — Drinking and leisure companion, often caught between Behrens and Carlmand. Behrens later becomes the unwilling taste-tester for Drew’s disastrous cooking 96 118 307.
- Marco — Respected opponent. Their prolonged duel ends with a handshake and mutual praise; they later socialize at drinking parties 125 126 275.
- Makino — Welcomes him aboard and expresses confidence that his growing strength will help keep the ship safe 29 68.
- Silco — Leader of the pirates who destroyed Behrens’s hometown and killed his parents; the target of his original pursuit for revenge 28.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Voyages and Alabasta
Behrens’s early battles expose the gap between his gunplay and the abilities of stronger opponents. In Loguetown, he defeats dozens of Marines but cannot damage Smoker without mastered Armament Haki. At Carlmand’s direction, he withdraws to protect Makino aboard the ship. In Alabasta, his Observation Haki gives him the advantage over a Baroque Works gunman, whom he defeats while Carlmand fights Daz Bones 37 51.
Sky Island and Water 7
Kazu directs the crew toward Jaya to obtain the Rumble-Rumble Fruit specifically for Behrens, explaining how it complements his shooting and close combat. After receiving the fruit on Sky Island, Behrens trains under Kazu in Water 7. His destruction of the Claude Pirates afterward is his first real fight since gaining the fruit and a public demonstration of his new strength 64 67 76 79 80.
Major Battles
| Opponent / Incident | Role and Outcome |
|---|---|
| Gadeko and the Tough Guy Pirates | Wins the right to respond to their provocation through rock-paper-scissors. Defeats Gadeko’s crew, overpowers his wolf form, and kills him with Raigo. The victory makes Behrens recognize how far his training has taken him 96 97 98. |
| Marco | Trades lightning attacks against Marco’s blue flames, traps him in Thunder Prison, and strikes his wing with a Haki-coated spear. They eventually call off the fight and acknowledge each other’s strength 125 126. |
| Diamante | Attacks him with 100-million-volt Raigo, then kills the wounded officer with two thrown lightning spears 169 170 171. |
| Smoothie | Blocks her sword, shocks her abdomen with Palm Lightning, and kicks her over a hundred meters away, swiftly defeating her 192. |
| Orochi Oniwabanshu | Opens the attack on the shogun’s residence by killing four ninjas with one lightning bolt; detects the remaining concealed defenders 246. |
| Germa 66 military base | Destroys the base with a shot he calls a laser cannon after it fires on the Blond Hair Pirates, beating Carlmand to the attack 278. |
| Saint Mars | Traps him in Thunder Prison, fills his Itsumade form with thousands of lightning spears, and detonates them with Thunder Explosion, killing him 292 293. |
Imperial Appointment
After Kazu removes the kingdom’s criminal royal family, Behrens is appointed commander of the palace guards. He welcomes the division of responsibility: Carlmand oversees external defense, while he controls palace security, preventing Carlmand from claiming superiority through his office. Their habitual bickering continues afterward 321 322.
Notable Quotes
“What do you mean, electric rat? From now on, call me the Mighty Thunder General!” 68
“Now I have the strength to protect my companions too.” 98
Trivia
- His home island is named Kodiros in his original account and Dikoros in his recollection during the battle with Saint Mars 28 292.
- He and Carlmand initially mistake Sky Island coconuts for pumpkins 67.
- At the postwar banquet, Behrens promotes himself as the crew’s second-in-command while disparaging Carlmand. The scene presents this as part of their rivalry rather than a formal appointment 297.
- A promised 50% increase in recreation funding leads him to taste Drew’s cooking, prompting the complaint that the world is “spinning vertically” and that the equator has changed 307.
