Background / History

Childhood and the Uchiha Massacre

As a young child, Sasuke adored Itachi and jealously guarded his attention. When Shinsei approached their training ground, Sasuke accused him of spying and objected to Itachi allowing him to watch. Itachi encouraged Sasuke to make friends, but Sasuke initially answered Shinsei’s introductions with repeated snorts 1.

At the Ninja Academy, Sasuke became Shinsei’s regular challenger after losing a class sparring match. Their classmates gathered to watch their bouts in the same grove where they had first met Itachi 7.

The Uchiha massacre left Sasuke orphaned and withdrawn. He disappeared from school for half a month, then returned cold and uncommunicative. About a month later, he resumed visiting the grove, directing his frustration into increasingly intense spars with Shinsei 8.

Team 7 and Orochimaru’s Offer

Sasuke graduated as one of the Academy’s strongest students and joined Naruto and Sakura on Team 7 under Kakashi 13 22. During their encounter with Orochimaru, he identified the impostor posing as Naruto because the real Naruto would not ignore Sakura. Orochimaru subsequently overwhelmed him, implanted the cursed seal, and offered him power to avenge his clan 32.

After testing the seal against Shinsei and losing decisively, Sasuke sought advice about his future. Shinsei explained Kakashi’s accomplishments and ties to the Uchiha, showing him that he still had opportunities to grow within Konoha 42 43. Sasuke began receiving additional instruction from Shinsei alongside Sakura 47 48.

Itachi later subjected Sasuke to Tsukuyomi, leaving him hospitalized with mental damage and a fractured wrist. Shinsei warned that Orochimaru wanted his body and had himself lost to Itachi’s Mangekyō. Although Sasuke insisted on taking revenge personally, he was urged to consider friendship and a future beyond killing his brother 58 59.

Remaining in Konoha

Sasuke rejected Kimimaro’s attempt to recruit him for Orochimaru. Their battle pushed his abilities to their limits, and Sakura’s intervention left her gravely injured. Once Shinsei arrived, Sasuke carried her back to Konoha for treatment 62 64 66.

He subsequently became Tsunade’s disciple and entered the Anbu as Team 7’s members pursued separate assignments. Under the codename Huoche, he joined Hashihime and Giant Beast’s team as an offensive specialist. Hashihime judged that his combat strength could qualify him as a Special Jōnin if not for his limited experience 73 74 75 126.

Other Worlds and the Battle with Itachi

Contact with another Shinobi World brought Sasuke face-to-face with a younger Mikoto. He tried to take her with him, while the effects of his Kamimusubi complicated her memories and identity. His newly acquired Mangekyō also accompanied increasingly extreme behavior, culminating in a confrontation in which Shinsei forcibly subdued him 138 139 140 291.

Shinsei continued helping him develop, restoring his eyesight with modified Hashirama cells and later giving him a stronger cursed seal. Sasuke initially refused to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō by taking Itachi’s eyes, prompting Shinsei to propose cloning Sasuke as an alternative source 149 261.

In their eventual duel, Sasuke’s strength, chakra reserves, and cursed-seal-enhanced Susanoo overwhelmed Itachi’s defenses. However, Itachi manipulated his anger until he forgot about Tsukuyomi and trapped him again. Itachi then approached, tapped Sasuke’s forehead, and died, leaving Sasuke emotionally empty rather than triumphant 271 272 273 274 275.

Rebuilding the Uchiha

After his revenge, Sasuke turned toward restoring the clan. He negotiated to bring Uchiha from another world to Konoha, but clashed with their leadership after learning that an orphan had not received compensation for a fallen parent. He insisted on accepting young people and children rather than the existing power holders 290.

Sasuke and Shinsei ultimately brought about thirty clanspeople to Konoha. Sasuke settled them in the old compound, letting them choose vacant homes before registering their selections 293.

When Shinsei questioned the clan’s separation from village society, Sasuke rejected the idea of placing the Uchiha above Konoha. He wanted an equal, harmonious environment in which his clan could survive without repeating its former course 294.

Later Service and Hokage Tenure

Sasuke confronted Danzo over the massacre and repeatedly struck him down as Izanagi restored him. He also volunteered to investigate a mysterious female Uchiha near Amegakure, identifying her as Chiri, the inventor of Izanami 321 325 342.

He eventually accepted Itachi’s eyes to help Shinsei’s Ten-Tails project. Using Kamimusubi, he implanted Little Nine’s memories into the creature’s consciousness while Shinsei protected him from its mental backlash 361.

As Anbu captain, Sasuke repeatedly left Konoha on unusual missions while secretly pursuing clues about Shinsei’s whereabouts 554. He later defeated Naruto in a contest for the Hokage position that prioritized judgment over strength. Initially eager to change the world, he found little worth overturning in Shinsei’s existing policies. He served four years before resigning 557.

Appearance

  • Face: Repeatedly described as handsome, with a cool, stern expression 74 263 276.
  • Sharingan: Scarlet eyes bearing tomoe; his Mangekyō takes the form of six-pointed stars 72 215.
  • Cursed seals: Orochimaru’s seal begins as three tomoe around the bite wound on his neck. Shinsei’s later seal spreads black, lightning-like markings across his body 32 261.
  • Yin Seal: Bears the seal between his brows by the time of his duel with Itachi 272.
  • Personal habits: Keeps his home clean and tidy; later clan responsibilities leave him less time to attend to his appearance 72 302.

Personality

Sasuke is reserved, proud, and intensely competitive. Defeat drives him to seek rematches rather than withdraw: he repeatedly challenges Shinsei despite their substantial power gap. Even much later, he struggles with the possibility that he may never catch up to Shinsei or Naruto 7 74 421.

The massacre turns his childhood attachment to Itachi into a consuming desire for revenge. Mentioning his brother can provoke reckless anger, despite his otherwise sharp observation and sound judgment. Shinsei considers him intelligent, sensible, and unwilling to abandon teammates when Itachi is not clouding his thinking 32 43.

His pride often conceals grief and affection. He turns away to hide tears when Shinsei discusses the Uchiha and refuses to show weakness while watching Naruto surrounded by family 43 181. Nevertheless, his concern for fellow orphans and his rejection of Uchiha supremacy show that loyalty to his clan does not mean unquestioning loyalty to its leaders 290 294.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

His Sharingan supports precise observation, rapid reactions, genjutsu, and the copying of physical techniques 126 179.

  • Copies movements from stronger sparring partners, especially Shinsei, to build a speed-oriented fighting style 263 273.
  • Breaks ordinary genjutsu with Mangekyō ocular power, but remains vulnerable to Itachi’s Tsukuyomi 272 273 275.
  • Cannot always move as quickly as his enhanced vision perceives; Shinsei exploits this gap during their confrontation 139.
  • Fails to land Sharingan genjutsu against Minato, who avoids eye contact while controlling the fight with Flying Thunder God 126.

Mangekyō Techniques

His documented ocular techniques include Amaterasu and Kamimusubi 139 291 361.

  • Amaterasu: Produces black flames from his left eye. He uses it against Shinsei and later Obito, though Obito escapes its effects through Izanagi 139 351.
  • Kamimusubi: Alters memories. Its effects on the other world’s Mikoto are eventually recognized and corrected, though the implanted memories remain in her mind 291.
  • Large-scale memory implantation: With Little Nine’s chakra as the memory source, implants memories into the Ten-Tails. He requires Shinsei’s protection against its overwhelming will 361.
  • Ocular strain: Mangekyō use initially causes pain, bleeding, and deteriorating sight; the Hashirama-cell solution restores his vision and offsets later damage 139 149 274.

Susanoo

Sasuke manifests a purple chakra construct that develops from a skeletal torso into armored and legged forms 140 168 180.

  • Wields a crossbow, chakra arrows, twin blades, and a merged greatsword 168 274.
  • Uses its defenses reactively, including to block Naruto’s attempted Thousand Years of Death 263.
  • Extends his new cursed seal’s enhancement throughout Susanoo, gaining enough force to shatter Itachi’s construct 274 275.
  • Its defenses are not absolute: Shinsei cuts through the skeletal form and later breaks the second form with a punch 140 149.

Lightning Release

Lightning Release supplies both Sasuke’s mobility and his principal cutting attacks 64 74.

  • Cell stimulation: Increases his speed independently of Chidori 50 64.
  • Chidori: Refines the technique into a more concentrated spike that supports thrusts and slashes 64.
  • Lightning Sword: Forms a blade from two fingers without hand seals. It cuts conventional weapons, steel wires, and an elongated stone arm 74 273 309.
  • Area coverage: Can erupt his sword into lightning spikes covering several meters around him 351.
  • Limit: Shinsei’s superior chakra control and Storm Release repeatedly break his Lightning Sword in direct clashes 74 139.

Fire Release

Sasuke uses both the Great Fireball Technique and Majestic Destroyer Flame 7 74.

  • Matches Giant Beast’s Fire Release and wins their spar after exhausting his opponent’s chakra 74.
  • Produces a broad sea of flames with Majestic Destroyer Flame 139.
  • Under the new cursed seal, his Great Fireball leaves a crater approximately ten meters across 261.

Tsunade’s Techniques and Taijutsu

Tsunade’s instruction combines with his Sharingan and Lightning Release to produce a high-speed, heavy-hitting fighting style 179 273.

  • Chakra Enhanced Strength: Delivers blows that crater stone and force Itachi to evade rather than block 272.
  • Yin Seal: Stores chakra and can receive the chakra accumulated by Shinsei’s new cursed seal 179 261.
  • Strength of a Hundred Technique: Is studying it by the time of his later spar with Naruto; mastery is not confirmed there 179.
  • Katsuyu contract: Can be contacted through Katsuyu as another of Tsunade’s disciples 342.

Cursed Seal and Mental Training

Shinsei’s replacement cursed seal provides power Sasuke compares to Sage Mode 261.

  • Enhances chakra, strength, speed, and ninjutsu, but its initially stored power runs out quickly 261.
  • Requires approximately ten days to half a month to accumulate its chakra 261.
  • Lets him match, and slightly exceed, Naruto’s speed in Nine-Tails Chakra Mode 288.
  • The Visualization Method strengthens his mind, reducing—but not preventing—the damage from his second exposure to Tsukuyomi 276.

Training Limitations

  • Flying Thunder God: Has access to the technique as the Hokage’s disciple but makes no progress despite studying it 126.
  • Sage Mode: Struggles to enter stillness and sense natural energy because memories of his family and Itachi overwhelm him 215.
  • Eight Gates: Begins training under Might Guy after Shinsei promises Sage Mode instruction in exchange; no opened gate is documented in that training session 185.

Relationships

  • Shinsei — Childhood friend, recurring rival, instructor, and senior fellow disciple. Guides Sasuke away from Orochimaru, develops major enhancements for him, and supports the clan’s restoration 43 59 140 261 293.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Teammate and close, brotherly rival. Their arguments coexist with repeated sparring, mutual protection, and eventual competition for the Hokage position 32 69 263 557.
  • Sakura Haruno — Teammate and romantic interest. Her willingness to risk her life changes his feelings toward her, but her later possessiveness leaves him frustrated and avoiding contact 69 127 342.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Beloved elder brother turned target of revenge. Itachi’s death leaves Sasuke empty; Sasuke eventually accepts his eyes for the Ten-Tails operation 1 275 361.
  • Tsunade — Teacher. Passes on her strength and chakra-storage techniques, treats his injuries, and supports his effort to rebuild the Uchiha 142 179 290.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Team 7 leader and Lightning Release instructor. Sasuke initially underestimates his background before learning about his achievements and connection to Obito 43 64.
  • Uchiha Mikoto and Uchiha Fugaku — His deceased parents, whose younger counterparts he meets in another world. His attachment to Mikoto complicates those encounters, particularly after Kamimusubi affects her memories 138 291 293.
  • Orochimaru — Seeks Sasuke’s body and gives him the original cursed seal. Sasuke rejects serving him and later openly dismisses his fitness as a teacher 32 62 66 272.
  • Danzo — Enemy confronted over the Uchiha massacre. Sasuke recognizes his use of Izanagi and repeatedly kills him as the technique restores him 321 325.
