Background / History

Childhood and Academy Years

Naruto grows up without his parents, facing hostility from adults and seeking acknowledgment through pranks and his ambition to become Hokage. Shinsei first meets him while he is defending Hinata from three children; Naruto’s tiny clones fail to intimidate them, and Shinsei intervenes before treating Naruto and Hinata to ramen 4 130 131.

At the Academy, Naruto repeatedly clashes with Sasuke despite receiving private coaching from Shinsei. He continues playing pranks even after gaining friends, including painting Hokage Rock. His enormous chakra reserves do not compensate for poor control: he fails the graduation Clone Technique examination 7 8 11.

After learning Multiple Shadow Clone Technique and defeating Mizuki, Naruto joins Team 7 with Sasuke and Sakura under Kakashi 12 13 22.

Early Missions and the Chūnin Exams

During the Land of Waves mission, Naruto and Sasuke coordinate a deception against Zabuza using shadow clones, Transformation Technique, and a concealed Fūma Shuriken. Shinsei observes that both boys are already stronger than their original-story counterparts 23.

Naruto defeats Neji in the Chūnin Exams by distracting him with clones while digging a tunnel for a surprise attack. During Shukaku’s rampage, he summons Gamabunta and works with Shinsei to restrain the beast, then wakes Gaara to end the transformation 50 53.

When an impostor posing as Kakashi apparently seals Shinsei away, Naruto desperately digs through the resulting pit. He breaks down in tears before embracing Shinsei upon discovering that he survived 53 54.

Jiraiya’s Training and His Parents’ Return

Naruto leaves Konoha with Jiraiya for a training journey planned to last two or three years. Beyond strengthening his foundations, Jiraiya provides companionship that helps fill the absence of a father figure 71.

After returning, Naruto meets younger, parallel-world versions of Minato and Kushina brought over by Shinsei. Inside his mind, he also encounters the chakra remnants of his actual parents. He initially confronts Minato over sealing Nine-Tails inside him, then embraces Kushina and tells them about his childhood. Despite his suffering, he assures them that he does not hate them 130 131.

Tsunade authorizes public acknowledgment of his parentage. Naruto subsequently gains a room in the parallel-world Minato and Kushina’s home, where the two genuinely come to regard him as their son 132 173 216.

Controlling Nine-Tails

Mito teaches Naruto to obtain Nine-Tails’ power by separating its chakra from its will, but his first documented attempt ends in a rampage. Shinsei later supervises repeated transformations and spars against Sasuke’s Susanoo, recording how long Naruto remains lucid 142 179 180.

His growing attachment to family worries Jiraiya, who believes Naruto’s comfortable life is slowing his development as the foretold Savior. Nevertheless, Naruto continues improving his Rasengan and tolerance for tailed-beast chakra before finally obtaining Nine-Tails Chakra Mode 216 257 285 287.

Major Missions and Village Defense

• Land of Water delegation: Travels with Team 7 as part of Konoha’s diplomatic party. During the confrontation with Pain, he refuses to retreat 148 151 167.
• Land of Demons mission: Joins an S-rank operation to investigate Killer B’s abduction. The enemy also targets Naruto for his Nine-Tails chakra, and he later fights Shisui using Nine-Tails Chakra Mode 302 308 321.
• Shion’s prophecy: Rejects the idea that her prediction of his death is unavoidable, insisting that people can change their fate 313.
• Amegakure confrontation: Reasons that Madara’s faction may have gathered the chakra needed for Ten-Tails and persuades Tsunade to let him accompany the group 345.
• Support against Ten-Tails: Lends his mental power through Shinsei’s network during the attempt to erase Ten-Tails’ memories 370.

Becoming Hokage

During Shinsei’s year-long absence, Naruto adopts a much stricter routine, training from before dawn until dusk. At sixteen, he has visibly lost his childish appearance and declares that he will beat Shinsei when he returns 554.

Five years later, Naruto prepares to succeed Sasuke, who served as Hokage for four years before resigning. Shinsei declines his inauguration invitation to avoid overshadowing him, but invites Naruto to explore the stars after leaving office. Naruto agrees 557.

Personality

Naruto is cheerful, outspoken, competitive, and kindhearted. He announces his intention to become Hokage from childhood and readily defends others, even before he has the strength to win. His rivalry with Sasuke frequently turns into loud arguments, especially when Sasuke calls him “dead last” 4 7 71.

His optimism coexists with deep hurt over his childhood rejection and lack of parental affection. The reunion with his parents lets him express those grievances without rejecting them. He also shows a protective streak toward Karin, promising that no one will bite her for healing again 130 131 265.

He is notably slow to recognize romantic affection. While continuing to pursue Sakura, he describes Karin as a little sister despite her obvious attachment to him 262 326.

Chakra Reserves, Stamina, and Recovery

Naruto’s natural reserves and endurance are exceptional even without counting Nine-Tails 11 71.
