Power Progression
Main-World Madara
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan | 14 58 | Historically possessed the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. His ocular powers enabled him to rival Hashirama and greatly enhanced his dynamic vision. |
| Rinnegan awakening | 325 350 | After taking a piece of Hashirama’s flesh and faking his death, spent decades developing the Rinnegan and arranging his eventual resurrection. |
| Impure World Reincarnation | 238 240 | Returned in a reanimated body with replenishing, effectively unlimited chakra. This removed Hashirama’s former advantage in a prolonged battle of reserves. |
| Living resurrection and Rinnegan deployment | 240 241 242 | Black Zetsu forced Nagato to perform Rinne Rebirth. Madara regained a living body and demonstrated Rinnegan techniques, but lost the reanimated body’s unlimited chakra. |
| Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode | 352 353 | Revealed a horned, scaled transformation that strengthened his defenses and amplified his rapid-fire ninjutsu, particularly Storm Release. Hashirama’s integrated flesh provided the aptitude to practice senjutsu. |
| Embryonic Kekkei Mōra / partial Six Paths transformation | 432 433 436 | Began fusing all seven chakra natures. Shinsei assessed the transformation as roughly seventy percent complete; regeneration already surpassed ordinary Hashirama-cell recovery. |
| Divine ability absorption: Susanoo | 498 499 | Absorbed the deity Susanoo’s abilities through his eyes, greatly enhancing his own Susanoo. |
| Multiple absorbed divine abilities | 516 | Acquired further powers by consuming attacking gods through his Rinnegan; immediately used an absorbed fire ability against poisoned needles. |
| Multi-nature Susanoo | 536 | Manifested a compact Susanoo combining Wood, Earth, Water, and Fire Release, emphasizing agility and durability rather than enormous size. |
| Six Paths level | 551 552 | Appeared with seven Truth-Seeking Orbs. Shinsei recognized this as the completion of his earlier transformation toward Kekkei Mōra. |
Elderly Parallel-World Counterpart
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary rejuvenation through the Demonic Statue | 385 386 387 | Drew energy through the statue’s tubes, reversing visible aging except for his white hair and bringing his condition close to his former prime. The restoration was temporary. |
| Hundreds of Susanoo-bearing Wood Clones | 391 392 | Escalated from a smaller clone force to hundreds of Wood Clones, each using Susanoo. The expenditure exhausted his remaining reserves; he died as his borrowed vitality ran out 393. |
Background / History
Madara led the Uchiha Clan during the Warring States period. Together with Senju clan head Hashirama, he founded Konoha and helped establish the village-and-nation order that endured afterward. Their strength earned them the respective titles of Asura of the Ninja World and God of Shinobi 58.
His political support did not match his military stature. Hashirama won their contest for Hokage almost unanimously, including support from many Uchiha. When Madara left Konoha, no clansman followed him 277.
Madara later fought Hashirama using the Nine-Tails. Before disappearing, he bit off a piece of Hashirama’s flesh and faked his death. He spent decades integrating that power, awakening the Rinnegan, and preparing a resurrection plan 14 325 350.
Despite abandoning Konoha and regarding its Uchiha as people who had betrayed him, he rejected the village’s right to massacre them. After his resurrection, he refused Hashirama’s invitation to return to a Konoha where the clan had been destroyed 245.
Appearance
- Usual appearance: Long, spiky hair, a stern face, red armor, and a traditional blue robe at his reanimated introduction. He frequently stands with his arms folded and chin raised 238 266.
- Eyes: Scarlet Sharingan before revealing the Rinnegan, whose concentric rings later become a prominent feature 238 241 266.
- Sage Mode: Branching horns resembling simplified antlers, snakescales across his skin, and white streams of energy surrounding him 352.
- Six Paths appearance: Seven black Truth-Seeking Orbs revolve behind him; his Rinnegan glow deep purple 551 552.
- Elderly counterpart: Long white hair, a stooped frame, and a hoarse voice. Temporary rejuvenation restores his skin and posture but leaves his hair white 385 386.
Personality
Madara is intensely proud and initially treats strength as the qualification for speaking to him as an equal. He dismisses Shinsei’s attempt at negotiation until Shinsei threatens his ultimate Susanoo, then openly acknowledges his talent. His admiration for formidable opponents also extends to Hidan after experiencing the Eight Gates 238 242 347 349.
Battle is a source of genuine pleasure for him, especially against Hashirama. His elderly counterpart accepts that Shinsei is using their fight to gain experience, yet welcomes the encounter once he recognizes the possibility of a satisfying death in combat 239 390.
His stated goal is peace, but he considers the existing world irreparably corrupt and is willing to destroy its institutions to remake it. This conviction drives both his Eye of the Moon Plan and his willingness to threaten Konoha 238 240 243. It does not prevent practical cooperation: he negotiates with Shinsei, seeks relief for the Rain and Wind countries, and later proposes an alliance against the gods 267 496.
His attachment to Kushinadahime exposes emotions he struggles to acknowledge. Her near-death evokes the grief he felt over Izuna and Hashirama, while impending fatherhood replaces his former indifference to personal danger with concern for his family’s survival 521 526.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Rinnegan
- Combat perception: Uses ocular tracking to anticipate rapid movements and combine precise reactions with extensive combat experience 239 390.
- Shinra Tensei: Produces an invisible repulsive barrier for defense and separation. Sage Mode strengthens its resistance to Shinsei’s attacks 352 353.
- Chibaku Tensei: Deploys the Rinnegan’s gravitational sealing technique during his post-resurrection battle 242.
- Chakra absorption: Absorbs ninjutsu chakra, frustrating even Hashirama’s senjutsu-based attacks 242.
- Fine gravitational control: Catches the airborne Flower of Life without damaging it 522.
- Limit: His living body has finite chakra, making exhaustion a possible countermeasure before his later transformations 242.
Limbo: Border Jail
- Creates invisible figures capable of physically attacking or defending. One shields him from much of Hidan’s fifth Evening Elephant strike 241 349.
- Shinsei identifies moisture-based electronic sensing as a possible means of detecting the otherwise unseen figures 241 242.
- Four Limbo shadows are positioned beside him during the confrontation with the Ōtsutsuki 552.
Susanoo
- Perfect form: A blue, armored, winged giant wielding two enormous chakra swords. Its sword energy can cut through surrounding hills 239 242.
- Repair: Restores damaged sections by supplying additional ocular power 242 349 387.
- Clone deployment: His elderly counterpart equips hundreds of Wood Clones with Susanoo 392.
- Wood reinforcement: Builds a Wood Golem inside Susanoo as an internal supporting structure 498.
- Compact form: Later combines several chakra natures into a smaller, agile construct with a Wood-and-Earth frame, Water armor, and Fire-powered joints 536.
- Limits: Large forms struggle against extremely fast opponents. Hidan’s Evening Elephant breaks its defenses, while the deity Susanoo’s Kusanagi Sword cuts through both its ordinary and Wood-reinforced forms 349 386 498.
Elemental Ninjutsu and Senjutsu
- Fire Release: Great Fire Majestic Annihilation Arrow produces a vast sea of flames; he can follow it with successive Fire techniques 239.
- Storm Release: Uses extremely fast attacks amplified by senjutsu chakra, often without hand seals 353.
- Tengai Shinsei: Calls down enormous meteorites, including one that Hashirama’s thousand-meter-scale Wood Golem struggles to divert 241 351 352.
- Efficient execution: His elderly counterpart performs ninjutsu with a single corresponding seal rather than complex sequences 390.
Taijutsu and Combat Analysis
- Combines agile, lethal movements with Sharingan perception, gaining an advantage in close combat against Hashirama 239.
- Compensates for Shinsei’s superior speed through evasion, redirection, and changes of technique 390.
- Quickly identifies weaknesses in unfamiliar techniques and recognizes the regenerative principle behind Shinsei’s Three Heads and Six Arms 389 391.
- Limit: Descent of the Thunder God allows Shinsei to strike faster than Madara’s body can respond, even when his Rinnegan perceive the attack 433.
Regeneration and Six Paths Transformation
- Begins unifying Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, Water, Yin, and Yang into Kekkei Mōra 433.
- During the incomplete transformation, repairs severe internal injuries within a few breaths; Shinsei judges sealing more practical than conventional killing while his chakra remains 436.
- Uses violent senjutsu chakra to destroy a hostile trace of natural energy inside his body, neutralizing an attempted poison or curse 521.
- Manifests seven Truth-Seeking Orbs after reaching Six Paths level 551.
Divine Ability Absorption
- His Rinnegan consume defeated gods and retain their abilities 498 516.
- Absorbing the deity Susanoo enhances his own Susanoo 498 499.
- Demonstrates immediate use of an absorbed fire power to incinerate poisoned needles 516.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red battle armor — Worn over traditional clothing; his later Ōtsutsuki confrontation features black-and-red Uchiha armor 238 552.
- Amenonuhoko — A divine spear associated with dark lightning. Madara uses it to divide an incoming natural-energy attack and kill attacking gods, though he initially admits incomplete mastery 516.
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Central to his Ten-Tails project; also sustains the elderly counterpart’s life and temporarily restores his fighting condition 350 385.
- Dragon Vein energy — Used to connect with another world and later bind together chakra from all nine tailed beasts 350 467.
- Flower of Life — Enables Kushinadahime to conceive his twins through contact with his aura. He later crushes it after her disappearance with their son 526 539.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Closest friend, co-founder of Konoha, and defining rival. Madara remains delighted to fight him despite rejecting his approach to peace 62 238 240.
- Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother whose loss remains emotionally significant. Madara later seeks a path back to an era when Izuna was alive 468 521.
- Tobirama Senju — Longstanding mutual antagonist; their reunion immediately resumes their insults and distrust 238 249.
- Obito Uchiha — Right-hand man and executor of his plans, though Madara recognizes Obito’s independent agenda. Obito arranges his reanimation and helps restore him after Hidan’s attack 267 291 353.
- Shinsei — Opponent, negotiator, and eventual ally. Madara’s initial contempt gives way to recognition, while Shinsei’s rapid growth pushes him to accelerate his own plans 242 468 496 551.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Reminds Madara strongly of Izuna. Madara intervenes to prevent an unnecessary injury during Sasuke’s fight with Obito 266 267.
- Nagato — Received Madara’s Rinnegan and became the unwilling instrument of his resurrection. After revival, Nagato rejects Madara’s cause 240 247.
- Hidan — Earns Madara’s admiration by breaking Susanoo with the Eight Gates, despite interrupting his fight with Hashirama 347 349.
- White Snake Sage / Ryūchi Cave — Allies against Shinsei; assist with Dragon Vein developments and provide the connection to his snake Sage Mode 350 352 467.
- Kushinadahime / Omoikane — Mother of his children. Their attachment survives her admission that she approached him for Uchiha eyes, though her deception deeply wounds him 523 539 551.
- Gen Uchiha — Son, initially taken away by Kushinadahime and later left for Madara with a note asking him to provide care 539 547.
- Unnamed daughter — Twin sister of Gen. Kushinadahime takes her eyes; Madara carries the girl away and tries to soothe her after their separation 539.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Resurrection and Negotiation
Obito summons Madara through Impure World Reincarnation during the Amegakure confrontation. Madara immediately focuses on Hashirama and orders the surrounding barrier released at his request, allowing trapped civilians to escape. Their reunion becomes a battle over whether Madara should be permitted to reshape the living world 238 239.
Black Zetsu then takes control of Nagato and forces Rinne Rebirth, restoring Madara’s living body. After demonstrating his Rinnegan and threatening Konoha over the missing One-Tail, he acknowledges Shinsei’s strength and enters negotiations. Shinsei ultimately secures five years for Konoha to prepare 240 241 242 243 249.
Amegakure and the Ten-Tails Project
As Amegakure’s leader, Madara seeks a mountain passage that would carry rain toward the Land of Wind and reduce flooding in the Land of Rain. Shinsei refuses unpaid work and requests Madara’s Yin-Yang Release knowledge as compensation; Madara subsequently leaves the mountain work to Obito 267 268 345.
To overcome Shinsei’s removal of the One-Tail, Madara cooperates with Ryūchi Cave to reach another world and obtain replacement tailed beasts. Konoha discovers his sealing ritual, and Hidan’s Eight Gates severely injure him. Shinsei then steals the Demonic Statue through spatial traversal, again disrupting the project 347 349 350.
Madara returns to combat, reveals Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode, and reaches a stalemate with Shinsei. Neither can reliably finish the other: Madara cannot match Shinsei’s speed, while Shinsei cannot penetrate his reinforced defenses consistently 352 353 354.
Elderly Madara in the Parallel World
Shinsei and Hinata locate an elderly counterpart beneath the Demonic Statue. He temporarily rejuvenates himself and fights Shinsei aboveground, ultimately accepting that a battlefield death would be preferable to dying in his chair 385 386 390.
His final offensive uses hundreds of Susanoo-bearing Wood Clones. Shinsei deliberately fights through them to improve his combat experience, but Madara’s borrowed vitality expires before a finishing strike. He closes his eyes and dies standing 392 393.
Six Paths Research and the New Ten-Tails
The surviving main-world Madara continues advancing. During a later clash, Shinsei discovers that his seven chakra natures are beginning to fuse and that his regeneration has already surpassed Hashirama-cell recovery 432 433 436.
At Rōran, Madara uses Dragon Vein energy and chakra from all nine tailed beasts to begin creating a New Ten-Tails. He intends to become its jinchūriki and travel between parallel worlds, returning to a time before the Uchiha’s destruction and Izuna’s death. He explicitly admits that Shinsei’s growth has made waiting too dangerous 467 468.
Gods, Kushinadahime, and Fatherhood
Madara arrives to defend the God Tree and proposes joining Shinsei and Kaguya against the gods. Through these battles, he absorbs divine powers and acquires Amenonuhoko 496 498 516.
Kushinadahime persuades him to spare the remaining gods. He appoints her their leader, assigns them land to farm, and personally helps her prepare soil and irrigation. When she is poisoned, he brings her to Shinsei and offers any terms for her survival 517 523.
Learning that the Flower of Life has made him the father of twins fills him with joy, followed by fear for their future against the Ōtsutsuki. Kushinadahime later disappears and admits she sought Uchiha eyes, leaving him with their daughter. He subsequently finds their son Gen left in his care as well 526 536 539 547.
Alliance Against the Ōtsutsuki
Madara reunites with Kushinadahime after completing his Six Paths transformation. Although hurt by her deception, he accepts cooperation against their common enemy. Their plan requires drawing the Ōtsutsuki to Takamagahara, where she has the home-ground advantage 551.
When Kinshiki reaches the trap, Madara emerges in battle armor with seven Truth-Seeking Orbs and four Limbo shadows already deployed 552.
