Arc 9Palm Thunder and Yahiko’s Mission

Shinsei helped repel Obito, returned to Konoha, and developed Palm Thunder while training others and protecting Gaara. The arc ended with Shinsei and Jiraiya taking Yahiko toward the Land of Rain, unaware of who was watching their departure.

  • Shinsei and the allied fighters battled Obito, discovered how his space-time ability worked, and watched him escape after he returned with his Rinnegan and Sharingan intact.
  • Shinsei accompanied Ōnoki to investigate the missing Four-Tails and Five-Tails Jinchūriki, then learned Akatsuki demanded his death in exchange for their lives.
  • Shinsei returned to Konoha with Tsunade, Sasuke, and Hinata, and later discussed Obito, Gaara, and the threat of Akatsuki with Tsunade.
  • Shinsei trained Tsunade and Sasuke in Sage Mode, helping Tsunade master senjutsu chakra while Sasuke’s memories triggered his Susanoo.
  • Mito Uzumaki reinforced Gaara’s seal, comforted Kushina about the Nine-Tails, and welcomed Kakashi as he reunited with Hatake Sakumo.
  • Shinsei and Tsunade developed Palm Thunder, a sealing technique that compressed natural water into explosive spheres, and Tsunade ordered Shinsei to make fifty for the Hokage.
  • Tsunade sent Shinsei and Jiraiya to the Land of Rain with Yahiko, who reflected that peace required changing people’s thinking, while a man reported their departure to a masked figure.
Chapters 201–225 Vol. 3 Read

Ch. 201Wood Release

Obito Uchiha repelled the allied fighters, countered Shinsei’s water attacks, and revealed Wood Release. As Sasuke advanced in Susanoo, Obito summoned a gigantic wooden golem and declared that Wood Release could rival Susanoo.

  • Obito Uchiha used a powerful repulsive force to send Ōnoki, Akatsuchi, the Raikage, Killer B, Sasuke, and Hinata flying.
  • Shinsei blocked Obito Uchiha’s flames with a water wall, then used Sage Art: Water Release: Great Water Shockwave to extinguish the blaze.
  • The Raikage and Killer B attacked Obito Uchiha with a Lariat, but their strikes passed through him, and his Shinra Tensei sent them skidding across the water.
  • Obito Uchiha used Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence to grow a forest that Tsunade, Shinsei, and Sasuke fought to cut down.
  • Sasuke expanded his Susanoo and attacked Obito Uchiha, who summoned a gigantic wooden golem with Wood Release: Wood Golem Technique.

Ch. 202Obito Wanted to Take on the Five Kage Too

Obito Uchiha used Wood Release, the Rinnegan, and Kamui to face the Kage, but Shinsei countered his Shinra Tensei and challenged him to fight without hiding. Obito summoned an enormous fan as Sasuke confronted him and demanded to know his identity.

  • Obito Uchiha raised a giant wooden golem and absorbed Ōnoki's Dust Release and Killer B's Tailed Beast Bomb.
  • Tsunade warned the others that Wood Release could absorb chakra, and Shinsei restored the mist so he could use Flying Thunder God.
  • Shinsei struck Obito Uchiha's Shinra Tensei with his fist, sending Obito crashing into the wooden golem.
  • Shinsei challenged Obito Uchiha to fight fairly, and Obito summoned an enormous palm-leaf fan.
  • Sasuke slashed the wooden golem with Lightning Release: Lightning Sword, then demanded to know who Obito was and why the Uchiha Clan had no record of him.

Ch. 203A discovery

Shinsei, Sasuke, the Raikage, and Killer B fought Obito Uchiha and discovered a way to pressure his intangibility while Shinsei cut apart the wooden figure. Hinata found something during the battle and hurried to tell Tsunade.

  • Obito Uchiha offered Sasuke a revived Uchiha Clan in an illusory world, but Sasuke attacked him in anger and learned that the Gunbai could absorb chakra and repel it as wind.
  • Shinsei rescued Sasuke and explained that Obito Uchiha's intangibility had a time limit, so the fighters began using taijutsu to keep him intangible without letting him escape.
  • Obito Uchiha animated the wooden figure and attacked Shinsei, who severed one of its arms with Sage Art: Storm Release: Storm Sword.
  • Sasuke, the Raikage, and Killer B kept weapons and limbs inside Obito Uchiha whenever he tried to become solid, preventing him from forming hand seals or escaping.
  • Shinsei sliced the enormous wooden figure in half, and Hinata told Tsunade that she had found something.

Ch. 204Izanagi

Shinsei and the others countered Obito Uchiha’s Kamui after learning how it worked, but Obito used Izanagi to survive their attack and escaped. Sasuke identified the forbidden Uchiha power, while the Raikage and Tsuchikage were left with questions.

  • Shinsei, Sasuke Uchiha, Killer B, and the Raikage kept blades and limbs in contact with Obito Uchiha to prevent him from escaping through Kamui.
  • Tsunade summoned Katsuyu, who relayed Hinata’s discovery that Obito transferred contacted body parts into another dimension rather than becoming intangible.
  • Obito Uchiha attempted to end the fight with Shinra Tensei, but Shinsei struck the force and the repulsion hurled Killer B and the Raikage away.
  • Obito Uchiha appeared to dissolve after being thrown back, but Shinsei saw him reappear on the broken wooden man with his Rinnegan and Sharingan intact.
  • Sasuke Uchiha explained that Obito had returned using the Uchiha Clan’s forbidden power, and Obito vanished through a space-time distortion.

Ch. 205Splitting the team

After the battle with Obito Uchiha, the allied leaders split their forces between rescuing Yugito and protecting the Four-Tails and Five-Tails. Shinsei traveled with Ōnoki toward Iwakage Village and began learning the Light-Weight Rock Technique during the flight.

  • Ōnoki and the Raikage argued over whether Shinsei should go to Iwakage Village or Amegakure.
  • Tsunade sent Shinsei with Ōnoki to protect the Four-Tails and Five-Tails while the others headed to Amegakure to rescue Yugito.
  • Shinsei, Ōnoki, Deidara, and Kurotsuchi departed together on a floating rock, and Shinsei waved goodbye to Tsunade and Hinata.
  • Shinsei studied the Light-Weight Rock Technique scroll and asked Ōnoki to explain a passage.
  • Ōnoki began sharing his understanding of the technique after Shinsei hinted that he might need time to recover chakra.

Ch. 206The gravity property

Shinsei studied Iwagakure’s Light-Weight Rock Technique while traveling to the Land of Earth with Ōnoki, Kurotsuchi, and Deidara. As they reached the land and saw a huge crater, Shinsei recognized the destruction as the work of Super Shinra Tensei.

  • Ōnoki explained the Light-Weight Rock Technique to Shinsei, who used his Sharingan to study Ōnoki’s chakra circulation.
  • Kurotsuchi questioned Shinsei about his Sharingan, and Shinsei joked that he could turn it off because he was handsome.
  • Shinsei tried developing the gravity transformation with a rock fragment, then created five shadow clones to help him practice.
  • The group entered the Land of Earth, where Shinsei observed its rocky, barren terrain and sparse rivers.
  • Ōnoki spotted a huge circular crater with shattered buildings, and Shinsei recognized the destruction as Super Shinra Tensei.

Ch. 207Kill Shinsei

Ōnoki and Shinsei discovered that Pain had captured Roshi and Han, then returned to Iwagakure to plan a response. White Zetsu delivered the Akatsuki leader’s demand: Shinsei had to die if the two Jinchūriki were to live.

  • Ōnoki, Shinsei, Kurotsuchi, and Akatsuchi searched the underground base and found dead ninja, but no trace of Roshi or Han.
  • Shinsei summoned Katsuyu and asked her to warn Tsunade that Pain had captured the Four-Tails and Five-Tails Jinchūriki.
  • Ōnoki led the group back to Iwagakure and called the village’s Jonin to a meeting about the abductions.
  • White Zetsu appeared at the meeting and said the Akatsuki leader demanded Shinsei’s death in exchange for Roshi and Han’s lives.

Ch. 208Threat

White Zetsu offered to spare Iwagakure’s jinchūriki if Ōnoki kept the village out of the conflict, and news that Yugito was alive pushed him toward accepting. Ōnoki let White Zetsu leave with a threat against Amegakure, while Shinsei departed Iwagakure.

  • White Zetsu demanded that Ōnoki leave Akatsuki alone in exchange for the jinchūriki’s lives, but Ōnoki initially refused and threatened to destroy Amegakure.
  • Kurotsuchi questioned White Zetsu’s trustworthiness, and Ōnoki weighed the risks of opposing Akatsuki and the possibility of saving the captives.
  • Shinsei considered whether the captured jinchūriki could survive having only part of their tailed beast chakra extracted.
  • Katsuyu told Shinsei that Tsunade had found Yugito alive, though most of her tailed beast chakra had been extracted and she had lost much of her vitality.
  • White Zetsu explained that Akatsuki would target Konoha alone and extract only some tailed beast chakra from captives in other villages; Ōnoki ordered him to leave and threatened to attack Amegakure in ten days.
  • Shinsei vanished from the hall, Katsuyu disappeared in a puff of smoke, and Ōnoki dismissed the assembled shinobi.

Ch. 209A journey home that fizzled out

Shinsei reflected on the villages’ willingness to compromise with the Akatsuki as he returned to Konoha with Tsunade, Sasuke, and Hinata after the Five Kage Summit ended without agreement. Back in the village, he considered how his rapidly growing chakra reserves could support a new set of ninjutsu.

  • Shinsei concluded that the other villages might compromise with the Akatsuki rather than risk their destruction, and noted how strong Konoha had become.
  • Shinsei used Flying Thunder God to catch up with Tsunade, Sasuke, and Hinata after the Raikage and Mizukage withdrew from the journey to Amegakure.
  • Shinsei transported Tsunade, Sasuke, and Hinata back to Konoha, where they passed through the village gate.
  • Shinsei heard Izumo Kamizuki and Kotetsu Hagane discuss his Flying Thunder God technique as Tsunade led the group into the village.
  • Shinsei reflected on his rapidly increasing chakra reserves and decided it was time to develop new ninjutsu suited to them.

Ch. 210Discussion

The two Tsunades discussed the masked enemy with Shinsei, who advised buying time and hiding Gaara in the other Shinobi World to keep the enemy from collecting all nine Tailed Beasts. As Shinsei headed home after the meeting, Orochimaru called out to him.

  • Shinsei had the Anbu seal off the Hokage's office, where the older Tsunade reported what had happened to the younger Tsunade.
  • The two Tsunades and Shinsei discussed the Uchiha and the masked man's unknown identity, then Tsunade teased Shinsei and kept most of his mission pay.
  • Shinsei advised Tsunade to wait while he, Naruto, Sasuke, and Minato Namikaze had time to grow stronger.
  • Shinsei explained that he could take Gaara to the other Shinobi World, preventing the enemy from collecting all nine Tailed Beasts, and Tsunade considered the risk to Konoha.
  • After leaving the Hokage's office and walking home, Shinsei heard Orochimaru call to him from the roadside.

Ch. 211A new Cursed Seal

Orochimaru showed Shinsei a new Cursed Seal made from Jūgo’s, Hashirama’s, and Shinsei’s cells, but its improved chakra came with the loss of instant activation. Shinsei agreed to provide more cells after his body evolved further, then returned home to rest while remaining wary of the dangers ahead.

  • Orochimaru asked Shinsei to take his questions about translating the body’s signals to Tsunade, and Shinsei agreed to consult his teacher.
  • Sakura rushed in to ask Shinsei whether Sasuke had returned, then fixed her hair before leaving to see him.
  • Orochimaru showed Shinsei a new Cursed Seal cell suspension and explained that its chakra was stronger but could no longer trigger its state at any time.
  • Shinsei agreed to provide Orochimaru with more cells if his body evolved and met the requirements.
  • Shinsei returned home, reassured Riya that he was uninjured, and rested while considering the risks posed by Obito and other ninja.

Ch. 212Training

Shinsei kept his plans for dealing with Obito Uchiha cautious because Obito could summon Madara Uchiha, then trained Sage Mode and the Light-Weight Rock Technique outside Konoha. On his way home, he saw Hidan rebuilding his strength and looked forward to seeing him master the Eight Gates.

  • Shinsei considered how Obito Uchiha might use Madara Uchiha and concluded he would summon Hashirama Senju if necessary, while keeping Gaara hidden to prevent the Ten-Tails from being assembled.
  • Shinsei gathered natural energy outside Konoha, stored some senjutsu chakra in the Yin-Yang Seal, and noted that Sage Mode was becoming faster and more effective for him.
  • Shinsei used shadow clones to practice the Light-Weight Rock Technique, but none succeeded before he dismissed them and absorbed their memories.
  • Hidan told Shinsei he had recovered the ability to open four gates and was training to regain his former strength; Shinsei imagined him using Night Guy against Madara Uchiha.
  • Shinsei returned home and began writing out plans for his future path.

Ch. 213Ninjutsu concepts

Shinsei planned to develop Yin Release to make his chakra techniques tangible, then agreed to teach Sasuke Sage Mode. He and Sasuke joined Tsunade as she rejected the elders’ request to increase Danzo’s funding, and the elders left the Hokage’s office.

  • Shinsei considered learning from the Nara Clan how to use Yin Release to give chakra physical form and sketched a future humanoid ninjutsu.
  • After a night of rest, Shinsei met Sasuke, who asked to learn Sage Mode, and agreed to teach him with Tsunade.
  • Shinsei and Sasuke entered Tsunade’s office as she refused Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura’s request to increase Danzo’s funding.
  • Shinsei and Sasuke stood silently behind Tsunade in support, and Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu left the office.

Ch. 214Sasuke went bald too

Shinsei took Tsunade and Sasuke to practice Star Sage Mode by sharing the natural energy he sensed, while Katsuyu removed it before it could harm them too severely. Their attempts left both of them losing their hair, and Tsunade regrew hers with the Strength of a Hundred Technique as Sasuke remained bald.

  • Shinsei brought Tsunade and Sasuke to the outskirts of Konoha and asked Katsuyu to draw natural energy out of them during their practice.
  • Shinsei pushed natural energy into Tsunade and Sasuke, and Katsuyu pulled it out before they could complete forming senjutsu chakra.
  • Tsunade and Sasuke suffered damage from the natural energy, and Tsunade began losing her golden hair.
  • Tsunade asked Katsuyu to wait longer before draining the energy, but her hair fell out while Sasuke developed bald patches.
  • Tsunade used the Strength of a Hundred Technique to regrow her golden hair, then laughed at Sasuke's bald head as Shinsei laughed too.

Ch. 215Tsunade's Sage Mode

Tsunade learned Shinsei’s Sage Mode and used its enhanced strength and speed to spar with him. As Sasuke struggled to sense natural energy, memories of Itachi and his parents surfaced, prompting him to awaken Susanoo and attack.

  • Tsunade condensed senjutsu chakra, gained a white glow, and found that a lock of her hair had turned black.
  • Tsunade tested her new strength by striking the ground, then challenged Shinsei to spar with her.
  • Tsunade’s senjutsu chakra greatly increased her strength, speed, and resilience as she fought Shinsei across the clearing.
  • Sasuke failed to enter stillness and was overwhelmed by memories of Itachi and his murdered parents.
  • Sasuke awakened Susanoo and fired a purple chakra bolt into a mountain, and Shinsei used Flying Thunder God to appear before him and strike Susanoo.

Ch. 216Qi deviation

Shinsei realized Sasuke’s fixation on avenging his family was preventing him from entering stillness, while Tsunade successfully practiced Sage Mode. Jiraiya asked to take Naruto away so hardship could spur his growth, leaving Tsunade and Shinsei to consider whether Naruto’s comfortable life was holding him back.

  • Shinsei knocked Sasuke’s Susanoo away and recognized that Sasuke’s obsession was causing illusions during meditation, so he told him to stop practicing stillness for now.
  • Tsunade stored some senjutsu chakra in her Yin-Yang Seal and showed Jiraiya and her younger self that she had learned Sage Mode.
  • Jiraiya asked to take Naruto away, arguing that Naruto’s comfortable life with Minato and Kushina was limiting his development as the Child of Prophecy.
  • Shinsei recalled how hardship had driven Naruto’s growth in the past and wondered whether he had spoiled the future Savior.

Ch. 217Hatake Sakumo

Mito Uzumaki welcomed Shinsei, Kushina Uzumaki, Tsunade, Kakashi, and Gaara to her home in another world. Kakashi went to visit his father, Hatake Sakumo, and waited at his childhood home until Sakumo arrived.

  • Mito Uzumaki felt lonely until she sensed familiar chakras approaching and ordered food for her guests.
  • Kushina Uzumaki reunited with Mito, and Tsunade proudly showed off her senjutsu chakra and a lock of black hair.
  • Mito greeted Kakashi Hatake and Gaara, then teased Kushina about her relationship with Minato.
  • Mito encouraged Kakashi to visit his father, and he left for the Hatake home.
  • Kakashi met his young counterpart in the courtyard, waited for Hatake Sakumo, and heard Sakumo ask if he had come to see him.

Ch. 218Father and son

Kakashi reunited with his father in another world, where they shared an emotional conversation and exchanged gifts. Shinsei ate with Mito Uzumaki and earned a scolding from Tsunade for calling her Grandma Mito.

  • Hatake Sakumo welcomed Kakashi into his home and asked the younger Kakashi to make tea for them.
  • Kakashi gave Hatake Sakumo a vial made with Hashirama Cells, but his father chose to leave it for the younger Kakashi.
  • Hatake Sakumo apologized for the suffering his counterpart had caused Kakashi, and Kakashi told him it was all right.
  • Kakashi gave the younger Kakashi a chakra-metal short sword, then joined Hatake Sakumo in the kitchen to cook.
  • Mito Uzumaki fed Shinsei meat, and Tsunade tugged his ear when he called Mito Grandma Mito.

Ch. 219Sealing anew

Mito Uzumaki strengthened Gaara’s seal on the One-Tail, allowing him to sleep peacefully for the first time in a long while. She then told Kushina Uzumaki that she would not force her to accept the Nine-Tails, but Shinsei’s question suggested the transfer might be imminent.

  • Mito Uzumaki enjoyed a meal with Tsunade, Kushina Uzumaki, Shinsei, and Gaara while they discussed the other Shinobi World.
  • Mito Uzumaki examined Gaara’s seal and reinforced it with water, containing Shukaku more securely.
  • Gaara felt relief from the One-Tail’s chakra and went to bed, while Mito Uzumaki questioned whether Hashirama Senju’s plan had failed.
  • Kushina Uzumaki struggled to decide whether to accept the Nine-Tails, and Mito Uzumaki told her that no one would force her and that she would find another solution.
  • Shinsei asked Mito Uzumaki whether it was almost time to transfer the Nine-Tails.

Ch. 220The end drew near

Shinsei learned that Mito Uzumaki’s remaining time was short and asked Tsunade to study a cell solution that might extend her life. He visited Yahiko, Konan, and Arin in Konoha, where they were settling in, and left with a photograph of their happy new life.

  • Mito Uzumaki comforted Kushina and said she could hold on a little longer, prompting Shinsei to worry that her death would change Hiruzen Sarutobi’s willingness to cooperate with him.
  • Shinsei showed Tsunade a pale green cell solution and asked whether it could extend Mito Uzumaki’s lifespan; Tsunade agreed to examine it after they returned.
  • Shinsei visited Yahiko, Konan, and Arin, who told him they were enjoying life in Konoha and attending the Ninja Academy.
  • Konan presented Shinsei with a paper flower, and he recognized her Paper Release as chakra synthesis rather than a kekkei genkai.
  • Shinsei gave Yahiko money and a camera, then took a photograph with the three children and considered sharing it with Nagato in the other world.

Ch. 221Developing the Water Mine

Shinsei struggled to compress water into a stable Compressed Water Mine, then visited Tsunade to ask for advice. Tsunade tested the technique, discovered a possible solution, and turned to Shinsei just as she caught him staring at her.

  • Shinsei repeatedly tried to compress a cubic meter of water, but could not shrink it beyond a basketball-sized ball before it burst apart.
  • Shinsei used Flying Thunder God to visit Tsunade and found her studying the cell solution he had provided.
  • Tsunade explained that her research ideas required better facilities, then teased Shinsei when she noticed him looking at her.
  • Shinsei described his difficulties developing a ninjutsu that compressed water and released it in a burst.
  • Tsunade tried compressing water herself, but it burst apart; she then said she had thought of a way and caught Shinsei looking at her.

Ch. 222Explosion

Shinsei and Tsunade modified the Reverse Four Symbols Seal to compress natural water into a marked sphere that could be released on command. They tested it at a distant lake, where the sphere produced a massive explosion, leaving Tsunade to reckon with its power.

  • Tsunade suggested Shinsei use Sealing Jutsu to compress natural water, and Shinsei decided to modify the Reverse Four Symbols Seal.
  • Shinsei and Tsunade spent half a day designing a seal that could compress water and release it through disrupted chakra.
  • Shinsei used his Shadow Clone to compress water from the lake into a fist-sized sphere weighing nearly four metric tons.
  • Shinsei teleported himself and Tsunade far from the sphere, then activated its seal and triggered an enormous explosion.
  • Tsunade observed the distant blast and its shock wave, which reached them from seven or eight hundred meters away.

Ch. 223Palm Thunder

Shinjō and Tsunade tested a new water-based explosive sealing technique that could threaten enemies who absorbed ordinary ninjutsu. Shinjō named it Palm Thunder, and Tsunade ordered him to make 50 of the stored bombs for the Hokage.

  • Shinjō used Flying Thunder God to bring Tsunade to the blast site and showed her the crater and damage caused by his compressed water bomb.
  • Shinjō explained that Palm Thunder used naturally occurring water, consumed no chakra when detonated, and could be stored for later use.
  • Tsunade explained that expanding the sealing range would make the technique unstable, while Shinjō continued testing its destructive power and limits against Susanoo.
  • Shinjō demonstrated compressing and storing another water sphere, then named the technique Palm Thunder at Tsunade's suggestion.
  • Tsunade demanded that Shinjō make 50 Palm Thunder bombs for the Hokage, and Shinjō realized she had maneuvered him into agreeing.

Ch. 224The plan

Shinsei prepared to travel to the Land of Rain with Jiraiya and Yahiko to persuade Nagato to abandon his plan for a powerful weapon. Yahiko left with them, questioning whether a weapon could bring peace and believing that people’s thinking needed to change.

  • Shinsei considered how Obito and Nagato’s goals could divide the Akatsuki and decided Yahiko’s presence might help persuade Nagato.
  • Tsunade approved Shinsei’s plan and ordered him and Jiraiya to take Yahiko to the Land of Rain while Obito was in the Land of Water.
  • Shinsei collected Yahiko from Minato’s home and told him they were leaving immediately.
  • Yahiko prepared for the trip and reflected that creating a powerful weapon would not guarantee peace, which required changing people’s thinking.

Ch. 225A new mission

Shinsei and Jiraiya set out with Yahiko on a secret mission to the Land of Rain, disguising Yahiko in girls' clothes and themselves with the Transformation Technique. After they left Konoha, a man confirmed their departure to a masked figure.

  • Tsunade warned Shinsei that the mission intelligence seemed suspicious and told him to protect himself.
  • Jiraiya offered to take Yahiko as a student, but Yahiko hesitated to accept him as a teacher.
  • Shizune and Tsunade disguised Yahiko as a girl so he could accompany Shinsei and Jiraiya unnoticed.
  • Jiraiya transformed into a woman, while Shinsei chose the alias Tairō and Jiraiya chose Mime.
  • Shinsei, Jiraiya, and Yahiko left Konoha, and a man reported their departure to a masked figure.
