Arc 2The Kings’ Banquet and Its Aftermath

Mayuri challenged Iskandar and Gilgamesh, defeating both with Spacequake and the Sword of Blazing Flame as the Holy Grail War shifted around her. After removing the Lesser Grail from Irisviel, Mayuri’s attack destroyed much of Einzbern Castle, Kiritsugu died, and Artoria found Irisviel beginning to wake.

  • Iskandar invited Mayuri, Artoria, and Kid Gil to a banquet, where the kings explained their wishes and Iskandar condemned Artoria’s regrets about her rule of Britain.
  • Mayuri defended Artoria, challenged Iskandar to a fight, and awakened her Astral Dress when Iskandar’s kingly pressure surged her Spirit Origin.
  • Tokiomi cleared Mayuri’s drunkenness and sent Hassan of the Hundred Faces to support her retreat, but Iskandar answered with Ionioi Hetairoi and his army destroyed the Assassins.
  • Mayuri fought Iskandar in his Reality Marble, used Spacequake to collapse it, then erased him and Gordius Wheel with a second Spacequake after Diarmuid intervened.
  • Kiritsugu attacked Kayneth’s hotel and workshop, but Kayneth survived the destruction and Kiritsugu’s Origin Bullet before Artoria rescued Kiritsugu from the battle.
  • Mayuri defeated Kid Gilgamesh with the Sword of Blazing Flame, destroying Vimana and eliminating Archer from the Holy Grail War.
  • Kayneth and Tokiomi agreed to a contract that directed Lancer and Caster to eliminate Saber, while Diarmuid engaged Artoria at the Einzbern forest barrier.
  • Mayuri removed the Lesser Grail from Irisviel and entered Kiritsugu’s room, but Artoria drove her away with Excalibur, and Mayuri’s lightning attack destroyed much of the castle, Kiritsugu died, and Irisviel began to stir.
Chapters 26–50 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 26An invitation to the Banquet of Kings

Iskandar invited Mayuri and the kings Gilgamesh and Artoria to a banquet, which he proposed holding at Artoria’s castle. After Mayuri reported the invitation, Tokiomi Tohsaka allowed her to attend and promised to teleport her back with a Command Spell if a battle began.

  • Iskandar recognized Kid Gil as Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, and proposed a banquet for the three kings that night.
  • Iskandar invited Mayuri, who said she would attend only if her Master agreed.
  • Iskandar left with Waver, and Kid Gil returned to the arcade after watching Mayuri go.
  • Mayuri bought snacks and drinks, then returned to the Tohsaka Residence and arranged them in her guest room.
  • Mayuri told Tokiomi Tohsaka about the banquet, and he gave her permission to go with a warning to return if fighting started.

Ch. 27Preparations for the Banquet

Mayuri waited outside the Einzbern forest for Iskandar so he could help her approach Saber without provoking a fight. She and Waver rode Gordius Wheel through the castle’s barrier and forest, reaching a clearing before Einzbern Castle.

  • Mayuri left the Tohsaka Residence with snacks and cola, flew to the Einzbern forest, and waited outside its barrier.
  • Iskandar arrived on Gordius Wheel, and Mayuri explained that she feared Saber would attack if she approached alone.
  • Iskandar invited Mayuri aboard, where she joined Waver and saw the wine prepared for the banquet.
  • Iskandar drove Gordius Wheel through the Einzbern barrier and smashed a path through the forest toward the castle.
  • Mayuri kept her snacks and cola steady as the chariot emerged into the clearing before Einzbern Castle.

Ch. 28Einzbern Castle

Iskandar arrived at Einzbern Castle with Waver and Mayuri and proposed a banquet where three kings could discuss their ways of kingship instead of fighting. Artoria accepted his challenge, and the group gathered in the castle garden as Iskandar prepared the wine.

  • Artoria and Irisviel waited at Einzbern Castle’s open gates as Iskandar’s chariot approached with Waver and Mayuri aboard.
  • Iskandar declared that he had come for a banquet and proposed that the kings compare their ways of kingship over wine.
  • Artoria accepted the challenge and warned Iskandar to be prepared for the contest.
  • Iskandar and Artoria chose the castle’s north garden for the banquet, while Mayuri, Waver, and Irisviel took places nearby.
  • Iskandar set out a barrel of wine and three bowls for himself, Artoria, and Mayuri.

Ch. 29Holy Grail Dialogue

Iskandar proposed a Holy Grail Dialogue to decide which king was worthy of the Grail, and Artoria agreed to hear the contest over wine. Kid Gil arrived late, criticized Iskandar’s wine, and produced wine brewed by the gods as Mayuri drank chilled cola nearby.

  • Iskandar proposed that the kings settle who was worthy of the Holy Grail through a contest of ability or will, and called it a Holy Grail Dialogue.
  • Artoria drank the wine and asked Iskandar whether this was how he intended to determine which of them was superior.
  • Kid Gil emerged from Spirit Form, complained that the banquet had started without him, and drank the wine Iskandar offered.
  • Kid Gil criticized the wine and summoned a golden jug of wine brewed by the gods, then poured goblets for himself, Iskandar, and Artoria.
  • Mayuri drank chilled cola from an ordinary stemmed glass and toasted Kid Gil, who answered with an amused snort.

Ch. 30Wishes

The three kings shared their wishes for the Holy Grail during their banquet. Artoria revealed that she wanted to change Britain’s fate, leaving the garden silent as the others considered her answer.

  • Kid Gil said he sought pleasure and wanted to add the Holy Grail to his treasury, then refused Iskandar’s offer to conquer the world together.
  • Iskandar said he wanted a physical body so he could conquer the modern world through his own efforts, not through the Grail.
  • Artoria said she wanted to save Britain by changing its fate of destruction, which had occurred under her rule.
  • Iskandar questioned whether Artoria meant to overturn her own history, and she confirmed that changing Britain’s ending was her duty as king.

Ch. 31The way of the conqueror

Iskandar challenged Artoria’s wish to undo her past as king, arguing that a ruler must stand by the choices that shaped their reign. He left her with the claim that kings must possess desires and inspire their people, while Artoria remained convinced that a king should sacrifice herself for her subjects and ideals.

  • Iskandar asked Artoria whether she meant to deny everything she had carved into history, and Artoria confirmed that she did.
  • Kid Gil suggested that Artoria might have been better suited to an ordinary life than to being a king.
  • Iskandar argued that a king should not sacrifice herself for her country, and said he had no regrets about his own choices despite the empire’s fall and his descendants’ deaths.
  • Artoria challenged Iskandar over the destruction of his empire and maintained that a king’s duty was to protect and properly govern her subjects.
  • Artoria said she had stopped hoping to live as a human being after becoming king, prompting Iskandar to angrily condemn a king without desires.
  • Iskandar told Artoria that a king must be greedier and feel more fiercely than anyone else, so the people would envy and be inspired by their ruler.

Ch. 32Mayuri's rebuttal

Iskandar challenged Artoria’s kingship, and Mayuri defended her by describing how she had delayed Britain’s inevitable destruction and given its people hope. Iskandar then demanded that Mayuri drink the wine before speaking at the kings’ banquet, and she finished the bowl despite disliking it.

  • Iskandar told Artoria that she had saved her subjects but failed to guide them, calling her no true king and merely a little girl.
  • Mayuri told Iskandar he had gone too far and explained that Artoria had delayed Britain’s inevitable destruction and given its people a reason to live.
  • Mayuri said Iskandar and Gilgamesh could not understand Artoria’s experiences, calling Gilgamesh a village chief.
  • Iskandar challenged Mayuri to drink the wine before her if she wanted to speak at the banquet of kings.
  • Mayuri drank the entire bowl of wine in one go, then coughed and wiped her mouth.

Ch. 33Loss of reason

At the banquet, Mayuri challenged Iskandar to a fight and, after his pressure triggered her defenses, revealed her black Astral Dress and four wings. The witnesses considered what her angelic nature meant while Tokiomi suspected that one bowl of wine had left his Servant drunk.

  • Mayuri challenged Iskandar to fight after the banquet, saying victory would prove her right about Saber.
  • Iskandar pressed Mayuri over whether her Master would allow the challenge, and Mayuri claimed Tokiomi would agree because defeating him would take little effort.
  • Iskandar responded with a king's pressure, causing Mayuri's Spirit Origin to surge and automatically summon her black Astral Dress and four wings.
  • Mayuri drank cola to clear her head, while Waver froze in shock and Irisviel privately considered how an angel might have been summoned as a Servant.
  • Tokiomi sensed erratic signals through his contract and suspected Mayuri had become drunk after one bowl of wine.

Ch. 34Assassin attacks

Tokiomi used a Command Spell to sober Mayuri and ordered Kirei to send Assassin to Einzbern Castle. As the Assassins surrounded the kings’ banquet, Iskandar challenged Artoria’s belief that a king must stand alone and began revealing his true kingship.

  • Tokiomi used a Command Spell to clear Mayuri’s drunkenness and restore control over her Spirit Power.
  • Tokiomi ordered Kirei to send Assassin to Einzbern Castle to cover Mayuri’s retreat and probe the other Servants’ trump cards.
  • Kirei relayed the order, and Hassan of the Hundred Faces surrounded the garden with nearly a hundred bodies.
  • Mayuri denied knowing who had sent the Assassins while privately learning from Tokiomi that they were there to help her retreat.
  • Iskandar dressed for battle and asked Artoria and Kid Gil whether a king had to stand alone; Artoria answered that one did.
  • Iskandar rebuked Artoria, declared that he would show them the bearing of a true king, and transformed the garden into a sunlit landscape.

Ch. 35Ionioi Hetairoi

Iskandar revealed Ionioi Hetairoi and used his army of over ten thousand warriors to destroy all of Hassan of the Hundred Faces' bodies. After the Reality Marble vanished, Mayuri challenged Iskandar to meet her in Fuyuki's southern outskirts the next day, and the remaining participants left the Einzbern garden.

  • Iskandar manifested his Reality Marble, Ionioi Hetairoi, and showed Artoria, Mayuri, and the others his army of more than ten thousand Servant-class warriors.
  • Iskandar led the army's charge against the Assassins, and the warriors eliminated every body of Hassan of the Hundred Faces.
  • Iskandar dismissed Ionioi Hetairoi, restoring the garden of Einzbern Castle, where Mayuri challenged him to meet her the next day in Fuyuki City's southern outskirts.
  • Mayuri flew away, and Kid Gil said he would watch the next day's fight before vanishing in golden motes.
  • Iskandar carried Waver to Gordius Wheel and departed, telling Artoria that he hoped she would think things through before their next meeting.

Ch. 36Preparations for Battle

Mayuri reported her challenge to the King of Conquerors, then visited Risei Kotomine and warned him that Kirei was beyond saving. She suggested Kirei pursue cooking spicy mapo tofu and urged Risei to bring back his granddaughter, Caren Ortensia.

  • Mayuri told Tokiomi Tohsaka she had challenged the King of Conquerors, and he approved the fight while warning her not to reveal the Sword of Blazing Flame.
  • Mayuri went for a walk and arrived at the church, where she met Risei Kotomine.
  • Risei asked Mayuri to guide Kirei, but she said Kirei was beyond saving and might become dangerous to others.
  • Mayuri suggested that Kirei become a chef specializing in spicy, numbing dishes, and Risei resolved to guide him toward that path.
  • Mayuri reminded Risei that Kirei had a daughter, Caren Ortensia, and Risei promised to bring his granddaughter back.

Ch. 37A Probing Clash

Mayuri faced Iskandar inside Ionioi Hetairoi, using her Astral Dress and Thunder Sanctuary to withstand his army and challenge its aerial beasts. As Griffin Form fought Iskandar’s Giant Divine Vultures, Iskandar concluded that Caster was Cherub, though its human and bull forms remained unknown.

  • Mayuri sensed that Iskandar’s Spirit Origin had grown stronger, then struck his divine bulls with crimson-gold lightning as a show of force.
  • Iskandar brought Waver to the confrontation and immediately deployed Ionioi Hetairoi, trapping Mayuri in a desert with his army.
  • Mayuri flew above the army, where her Astral Dress stopped its arrows, and summoned Thunder Sanctuary in Vulture Form.
  • Iskandar sent two Giant Divine Vultures to attack Mayuri, and Thunder Sanctuary changed to Griffin Form to meet them.
  • Iskandar recognized Caster as Cherub and noted that its human and bull forms were still unknown.

Ch. 38Anti-World Noble Phantasm

Mayuri used Spacequake to escape and destroy Iskandar's Ionioi Hetairoi from within, then sent Thunder Sanctuary-Vulture Form to attack him. Diarmuid arrived with two demonic swords and blocked the attack, leaving Iskandar protected once more.

  • Mayuri ordered Thunder Sanctuary-Vulture Form to attack Iskandar, but Hephaestion, Craterus, and Leonnatus stopped its charge long enough for Iskandar to take Waver outside the Reality Marble.
  • Mayuri realized the soldiers could stall her while Iskandar sustained Ionioi Hetairoi, so she activated her third Noble Phantasm, Spacequake, and vanished into a gray space between worlds.
  • Mayuri returned inside Ionioi Hetairoi and unleashed Spacequake, tearing apart the Reality Marble and sweeping away its soldiers and landscape.
  • Iskandar felt Ionioi Hetairoi collapse and suffered severe feedback through their contract, while Mayuri reappeared in the real world and ordered Thunder Sanctuary-Vulture Form to eliminate him.
  • Diarmuid appeared before Iskandar with a red longsword and a yellow short sword, then blocked Vulture Form's charge.

Ch. 39Diarmuid the interloper

Mayuri attacked the King of Conquerors and Diarmuid with Thunder Sanctuary, then prepared and unleashed her Anti-World Noble Phantasm. The spatial collapse eliminated Iskandar, while Diarmuid escaped south with Waver.

  • Mayuri questioned Diarmuid about helping the King of Conquerors, but he refused to explain and warned her to leave.
  • Mayuri merged with Thunder Sanctuary and attacked with massive lightning whips, but the King of Conquerors evaded them in the Gordius Wheel and Diarmuid dodged them on foot.
  • Mayuri confirmed with Tokiomi Tohsaka that he could supply enough magical energy and began using her Anti-World Noble Phantasm.
  • When Thunder Sanctuary vanished, the King of Conquerors threw Waver toward Diarmuid and ordered him to get Waver to safety.
  • Diarmuid caught Waver and fled south as the second Spacequake erased the surrounding terrain.
  • The spatial collapse destroyed the King of Conquerors and the Gordius Wheel, making Iskandar the third Servant eliminated from the Holy Grail War.

Ch. 40Diarmuid vs. the King of Knights: Round Two

After Iskandar was eliminated in the Spacequake, Kayneth summoned Diarmuid back to the Hyatt Hotel, where Kiritsugu and Artoria launched an attack. Diarmuid intercepted Artoria, and their second duel began amid the hotel's destruction.

  • Diarmuid rescued the unconscious Waver from the Spacequake and confirmed that Iskandar had been eliminated.
  • Kayneth used a Command Spell to summon Diarmuid to the Hyatt Hotel, then realized Kiritsugu was attacking his base.
  • Artoria struck the hotel with a powerful Mana Burst, destroying part of its eastern side, while Irisviel watched from a nearby rooftop.
  • Kayneth ordered Diarmuid to protect him with a Command Spell, temporarily increasing Diarmuid's combat abilities.
  • Diarmuid intercepted Artoria in midair, and the two fought with swords through the collapsing hotel.

Ch. 41The Legendary Demolitionist

Kiritsugu Emiya brought down the Hyatt Hotel by destroying its foundations, trapping Kayneth in the rubble and costing him one of his three Mana Furnaces. As Diarmuid continued to falter against Artoria, Volumen Hydrargyrum carried Kayneth out of the ruins.

  • Artoria pressed Diarmuid through the streets, and his twin demonic swords struggled to withstand her powerful blows.
  • Kayneth waited in his fortified workshop, relying on its Mana Furnaces and Volumen Hydrargyrum to defend him from Kiritsugu Emiya.
  • Kiritsugu Emiya destroyed the Hyatt Hotel's support columns, collapsing the building instead of attacking Kayneth directly.
  • Kayneth survived inside Volumen Hydrargyrum with two Mana Furnaces, while the third was buried in the ruins.
  • Diarmuid began to falter as Artoria's relentless attacks strained his arms and weapons.
  • Volumen Hydrargyrum emerged from the rubble and opened to reveal Kayneth inside.

Ch. 42My lord, times have changed

Kayneth expanded the Volumen Hydrargyrum’s defenses and survived Kiritsugu’s sniper test, while Kiritsugu escaped and drew him into a prepared urban pursuit. The chase continued toward a department store where Kiritsugu had hidden a large cache of C4.

  • Kayneth added four tubes of mercury to the Volumen Hydrargyrum and deployed five masses for layered defense and reconnaissance.
  • Kiritsugu fired an armor-piercing round from a rooftop, and the Volumen Hydrargyrum’s second defensive layer stopped it.
  • Kiritsugu abandoned his sniper rifle and used Time Alter to flee as Kayneth’s mercury tendrils tracked him.
  • Kayneth pursued Kiritsugu through the streets and buildings, but the urban routes slowed the mercury and kept him just out of reach.
  • Kiritsugu entered an underground parking garage connected to a passage leading to the department store where he had hidden a large cache of C4.

Ch. 43You chase, I flee

Kiritsugu Emiya detonated his department-store trap and escaped, but Kayneth survived and tracked him down. Kiritsugu’s Origin Bullet struck Kayneth after his runestone blocked its effect on his Magic Circuits.

  • Kiritsugu Emiya reached the storage area and detonated more than sixty kilograms of C4, collapsing part of the department store.
  • Kiritsugu Emiya escaped through the neighboring building’s basement, injured himself with Time alter-square accel, and prepared his Origin Bullet in case Kayneth survived.
  • Kayneth survived inside Volumen Hydrargyrum’s defenses, replenished his magical energy, and used scouting tendrils to locate Kiritsugu Emiya.
  • Kayneth disabled Volumen Hydrargyrum’s automatic defense and relied on a single-use runestone to protect his Magic Circuits from the Origin Bullet.
  • Kiritsugu Emiya fired the Origin Bullet from fifteen meters away; the runestone was destroyed, but the bullet continued into Kayneth’s right chest.

Ch. 44Didn't see that coming

Kiritsugu Emiya used a Command Spell to summon Artoria away from her fight with Diarmuid, then ordered her to retreat with him after Kayneth severed his arm. Kayneth healed Diarmuid and stayed behind, while Mayuri watched the unconscious Waver Velvet and considered what should happen to him.

  • Kayneth's bulletproof vest stopped Kiritsugu Emiya's Origin Bullet, but Volumen Hydrargyrum severed Kiritsugu's right arm when he dodged its attack.
  • Kiritsugu used a Command Spell to summon Artoria away just before she could deliver a final strike against Diarmuid.
  • Artoria arrived between Kiritsugu and Kayneth, and Kayneth used his final Command Spell to recall Diarmuid and begin healing his wounds.
  • Kiritsugu ordered Artoria to retreat to the castle, and she carried him and his severed arm away from the collapsed building.
  • Kayneth chose not to pursue Artoria and planned to recover the buried Mana Furnace beneath the Hyatt Hotel.
  • Mayuri watched the unconscious Waver Velvet near the Spacequake basin and considered that he had lost his Servant and no longer qualified for the Holy Grail War.

Ch. 45Aerial combat

Mayuri flew back toward the Tohsaka Residence after leaving Waver unconscious, but Gilgamesh intercepted her on Vimana and attacked. She merged with Thunder Sanctuary to defend herself and asked Tokiomi whether she should fight or retreat.

  • Mayuri spotted the unconscious Waver Velvet on the slope, chose to leave him alone, and flew toward downtown Fuyuki.
  • Gilgamesh caught up to Mayuri on Vimana, and she fired crimson-gold lightning at his vessel.
  • Gilgamesh blocked the lightning with a shield from the Gate of Babylon, which shattered, then launched Hector's Spear at Mayuri.
  • Thunder Sanctuary blocked Hector's Spear with its wings and shell, and Mayuri merged with the sphere to protect herself.
  • Mayuri contacted Tokiomi and asked whether she should fight Gilgamesh or retreat.

Ch. 46Sword of Blazing Flame vs. Ea

Tokiomi ordered Mayuri to use the Sword of Blazing Flame against Gilgamesh, and Mayuri unleashed its city-destroying power. Gilgamesh foresaw that he could not win a direct clash, raised a vast array of defensive Noble Phantasms, and began firing Ea as the beam struck.

  • Tokiomi ordered Mayuri to engage Gilgamesh and said she could release her ultimate Noble Phantasm.
  • Mayuri transformed Thunder Sanctuary into the Sword of Blazing Flame and charged it with her accumulated Spirit Power.
  • Gilgamesh used Sha Naqba Imuru to foresee that Mayuri's attack could destroy Fuyuki City and exceed his power in a direct clash.
  • Gilgamesh summoned Ea and surrounded Vimana with more than a dozen defensive Noble Phantasms.
  • Mayuri fired a massive beam at Vimana as Gilgamesh poured his magical energy into Ea and began chanting Enuma-Elish.

Ch. 47Archer's exit

Mayuri’s Sword of Blazing Flame overwhelmed Kid Gilgamesh’s Enuma Elish and destroyed Vimana, eliminating Archer. Tokiomi Tohsaka learned of the victory and believed Caster could defeat the two remaining opposing Servants.

  • Kid Gilgamesh unleashed Ea against Mayuri’s white beam, but his attack and defensive Noble Phantasms were overwhelmed.
  • The beam destroyed Vimana and erased Kid Gilgamesh’s Spirit Origin, eliminating Archer.
  • Mayuri ended her fused state and informed Tokiomi Tohsaka through their contract that Archer had been eliminated.
  • Tokiomi recalled Caster and considered Saber and Lancer the remaining opponents, confident that Mayuri could defeat them.

Ch. 48Self-Geas Scroll

After the battle left Kiritsugu injured and Irisviel unconscious, Artoria confronted him over his knowledge of Irisviel’s role as the Lesser Grail. Kayneth visited Tokiomi to propose an alliance, offering to help him win the ritual under a binding contract that would limit the Grail’s exposure and target Saber.

  • The clouds over Fuyuki City thickened after the Sword of Blazing Flame evaporated seawater, while Kiritsugu lay in bed with his right arm severed and Irisviel remained unconscious as Avalon restrained the Lesser Grail’s transformation.
  • Artoria realized Kiritsugu had always known that Irisviel was the Lesser Grail and that winning the war would cost him his wife, then left his doorway.
  • Kayneth visited Tokiomi alone and revealed that he had transferred Waver’s three unused Command Spells to himself before sending Waver back to London.
  • Kayneth proposed a contract with Tokiomi using a Self-Geas Scroll, requiring the Holy Grail ritual to avoid drawing ordinary society’s attention and calling for Lancer and Caster to eliminate Saber first.

Ch. 49The Lesser Grail

Diarmuid drew Artoria into a duel outside the Einzbern forest while Mayuri infiltrated the castle and removed the Lesser Grail from Irisviel. Mayuri then approached Kiritsugu Emiya to kill him, but he sensed her and activated a Command Spell.

  • Diarmuid challenged Artoria at the forest barrier, and the two began fighting.
  • Mayuri flew into the castle while Diarmuid kept Artoria occupied and identified Irisviel as the Lesser Grail’s vessel.
  • Mayuri removed the Lesser Grail from Irisviel, whose body regenerated with the help of Avalon.
  • Mayuri decided to kill Kiritsugu Emiya as well and entered his room under Presence Concealment.
  • Kiritsugu Emiya sensed Mayuri’s killing intent and activated his second Command Spell.

Ch. 50Kiritsugu Emiya's exit

Mayuri stole the Lesser Grail from Irisviel and escaped after her attack devastated Einzbern Castle and killed Kiritsugu Emiya. Artoria survived on Irisviel’s magical energy, found Irisviel still alive, and watched her begin to stir.

  • Artoria arrived in Kiritsugu Emiya’s bedroom and blasted Mayuri through the castle wall with Excalibur, but Mayuri protected the Lesser Grail and escaped.
  • Mayuri’s Thunder Sanctuary dropped a massive lightning ball toward Einzbern Castle, and Artoria intercepted it with Excalibur’s Mana Burst.
  • The attack’s residual shock wave destroyed the castle’s western half, buried Kiritsugu Emiya beneath rubble, and left Maiya Hisau severely injured and unconscious.
  • Artoria sensed her contract with Kiritsugu Emiya break and realized he had died, but Irisviel’s magical energy kept her from fading away.
  • Artoria found Irisviel alive in the east wing and realized Caster had removed the Lesser Grail from her chest.
  • Irisviel fluttered her eyelashes, rubbed her eyes, and began to stir.
