Power Progression
Wu Fei's displayed cultivation does not consistently reflect his actual strength. His Exquisite Heart allows him to suppress his cultivation, while the inheritance tomb imposes a separate limit on the power he can wield 7 20.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Late Golden Core — public cultivation | 1 | Introduced as the strongest member of the visiting Buddha Spirit Sect disciples. His true cultivation is concealed. |
| Golden Core Perfection — public cultivation | 12 | Jing Fanyu states that Wu Fei reached this level long ago; Wu Fei says he is waiting for an opportunity to advance. |
| Early Nascent Soul — displayed breakthrough | 14 | His aura rises to this level while he survives the collapsing inheritance cave abode. This does not establish his previously concealed true realm. |
| Peak Mahayana — actual advancement | 20 | The spiritual power of the Soul-Cleansing Nether Fish raises his true cultivation directly to peak Mahayana. A trace of Spirit Transformation aura escapes before the tomb suppresses his usable power to peak Nascent Soul. |
| Spirit Transformation — public cultivation | 21 | His aura rises to this level upon leaving the small world. Other cultivators remain unaware of his peak Mahayana cultivation. |
| Improved exquisite state of mind | 25 | Sutra chanting from the mysterious city stabilizes his failing Exquisite Heart and raises his state of mind. He recovers after meditating for two months and five days. |
Background
Lu Wufei transmigrated into Wu Fei while the latter was still young. In the original Heavenly Dao, Wu Fei was a profoundly accomplished Buddhist disciple who ultimately died sealing away the Devil Venerable. Lu Wufei knows this intended fate and privately finds it unappealing 1 3.
The body's recorded background describes an orphan taken in by Jingguan from childhood, born with an Innate Exquisite Heart and practicing Buddhist cultivation from birth. Jingguan becomes guarded when questioned about both Wu Fei's origins and the Silent Dust Pearl 23 36.
Heavenly Dao's Restrictions
Wu Fei discovers that departing from his prescribed, desireless Buddhist persona brings potentially fatal accidents. Reading a romance storybook is followed by a near-fatal fall into a well; expressing greed is followed by a heavy stone plaque nearly striking him. He therefore behaves as “Wu Fei” in public while reserving his identity as Lu Wufei for private moments 3.
He suspects these rules are enforced by the Heavenly Dao. Later incidents—including the inheritance cave's collapse and the danger beneath Clear Heart Village—reinforce his belief that exposing forbidden desires or concealed strength can provoke a life-and-death tribulation 3 14 25.
Appearance
- Face and build: Exceptionally handsome, with fair skin, a broad chest, and a lean, muscular waist 8 10 11.
- Hair: Bald; he believes the body's hair will never grow back, even if he escapes his restrictions 11.
- Eyes: Ordinarily clear black-and-white eyes that support his desireless appearance; in private, his gaze can become dark, amused, or aggressive 3 34.
- Clothing: Usually wears white Buddhist robes, sometimes with muted golden cuff patterns. He also owns patterned black Buddhist robes that particularly appeal to Yin Fan 8 18 49.
- Accessories: Carries Buddhist prayer beads; Yin Fan later attaches a miniature ink-black xiao to them 1 18.
- Feigned corruption: Displays blood-red pupils after the Obstruction Devil enters his body, then uses an eye-color-changing item to conceal them 47 48 49.
Personality
Wu Fei's public manner is serene, courteous, and apparently untouched by desire. He maintains his composure through injury, threats, and intimate provocation. His fellow disciples trust his judgment even when they are senior to him 2 3 5.
Privately, Lu Wufei is playful, calculating, acquisitive, and considerably more forceful than his Buddhist persona suggests. He eagerly gathers valuable resources, enjoys turning Yin Fan's teasing back on him, and resents the restrictions preventing him from expressing his attraction openly 6 8 19 34 48.
His affection is expressed through practical care as well as teasing. He protects Jing Fanyu during cultivation, gives him calming beads, reassures him after their flight from the sects, and deliberately takes the Obstruction Devil's attack in his place 8 18 31 47.
Abilities & Skills
Innate Exquisite Heart
The Exquisite Heart grants an inherently flawless state of mind. Its original possessor would develop neither attachments nor romantic love; Lu Wufei's actual feelings do not conform to that condition 35.
- Calming influence: His compassionate aura settles others' thoughts and discourages irreverent desire. Yin Fan is a notable exception 2 3 14.
- Enlightenment: Enters enlightenment while observing Mahayana cultivators demonstrate their methods 6.
- Cultivation concealment: Suppresses his realm sufficiently to enter a small world restricted to cultivators below Nascent Soul 7.
- Resistance to inner demons: Gives rise to no inner demons and does not fear obstruction demons, making his claimed demonic corruption a deception 48.
- Vulnerability to hostile energy: Rejects the tomb's contaminated spiritual qi painfully and reacts badly to the evil aura beneath Clear Heart Village. Yin Fan's spiritual power can nourish his injured meridians but cannot reach the Exquisite Heart itself 8 22 25.
Buddhist Combat and Secret Methods
Wu Fei initially possesses stronger defensive abilities than offensive ones. The Buddhist senior in the inheritance palace gives him martial skills and secret methods intended to correct that imbalance 20.
- Kills late Nascent Soul demon beasts with prayer beads and a vajra stake 7 8.
- Uses Buddhist beads to distract ancient puppets and rescue Jing Fanyu 15.
- Removes the Seven Emotions Flower's remaining influence from Jing Fanyu 11.
- Uses the Phantom Step Golden Lotus, a movement technique obtained in the inheritance tomb; he initially avoids using it because it is too conspicuous 37.
Divine Sense and Formations
- Detects hidden visitors and familiar demonic qi 3 5.
- Tracks the prayer beads carried by Jing Fanyu/Yin Fan 5 7 15.
- Establishes protective arrays around caves and temporary lodgings, including an array that excludes contaminated spiritual qi 8 10.
- Identifies that a cave formation used a pill as its core 12.
- Combines Divine Sense and spiritual power to reveal the red markers of the hidden route through the inheritance grounds' yellow sand 19.
- Helps uncover the peach grove's underground formation by determining where its absorbed spiritual qi is being sent 35.
Speech Karma
Wu Fei leaves the power of speech karma on the cultivators who hunted Fu Hong 49.
- Malicious speech triggers karmic punishment, including recurring mouth sores and uncontrollable drooling.
- Those who subsequently watch their words and actions suffer no effects.
- The punishment's severity and duration depend on the evil generated by their speech 49.
Equipment & Items
- Silent Dust Pearl — His natal Spirit Artifact, nurtured within his dantian. It transforms into a golden bow, fires condensed golden arrows, and briefly holds back hostile gray mist. It also activates the peach grove's formation and later houses Lu Feiyuan and Yun Huai's remnant souls 18 22 35 36 47.
- Buddhist prayer beads — Used for combat, restraint, tracking, and calming the mind. His finest strand uses bodhi seeds soaked in the Cleansing Pool for decades and nurtured by his exquisite state of mind 5 8 15 40.
- Miniature ink-black xiao — A protective gift from Yin Fan, attached to his prayer beads with a cord made from demonic qi 18.
- Glazed golden alms bowl — Expands to shield him from the collapsing cave abode; later collects Spirit Liquid from the underwater altar 14 32.
- Vajra stake — Used to kill demon beasts while collecting spirit herbs 8.
- Shadow-Concealing Robe — Conceals his tracks and aura at the cost of spiritual power 22.
- Illusion Pearls — Gifts from the Illusory Realm Spirit. Once activated, a pearl draws everyone within a hundred paces into visions of their deepest fears, potentially damaging their Dao hearts 31.
- Soul-nourishing jade token — Obtained during the encounter with the mysterious city; later appears as a pattern on his wrist, which he hides beneath his skin 25 27.
- Image-recording stone — Secretly records Yin Fan's sleeping face 34.
- Inheritance treasures — His shared haul with Jing Fanyu includes over one hundred Mysterious Lightning Fruits and twenty Mysterious Lightning Wood trees more than fifty thousand years old 21.
Relationships
- Yin Fan / Jing Fanyu — Romantic partner and the protagonist-villain of Heavenly Dao. Wu Fei knows his dual identity from reading the novel, but outwardly treats the two personas separately until the public exposure. He accepts Yin Fan without condemnation and later declares that Yin Fan's obsession is his own 3 5 29 48 50.
- Jingguan — Master and sect leader. Trusts Wu Fei's judgment and supports his decision to stand beside Yin Fan. His knowledge of Wu Fei's origins remains unresolved 23 29 36.
- Kuzheng — Fellow Buddha Spirit Sect disciple who looks to Wu Fei for guidance and reunites with him near the inheritance grounds 1 2 17.
- Lu Feiyuan and Yun Huai — Remnant souls whose familiarity and parental-looking affection lead Wu Fei to suspect a connection to his origins. Their souls enter the Silent Dust Pearl; their exact relationship to him is not confirmed 33 34 36.
- Liu Yuexuan — Hostile Heavenly Sword Sect disciple. Wu Fei notices her malice toward him and Jing Fanyu, follows her suspicious movements, and later investigates the altar she activates 27 28 40 41.
- Cang Xiao — Pursuer and opponent after Yin Fan's exposure. Wu Fei secretly traps him and the other pursuing Mahayana cultivators with an Illusion Pearl 29 31.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Sword-Seeking City
Wu Fei arrives with the Buddha Spirit Sect for the gathering of cultivation factions. Meiji attacks him while he is publicly presenting late Golden Core cultivation; Jing Fanyu's sword strike drives her away. Yin Fan subsequently visits Wu Fei in secret and marks him with dormant demonic qi. Wu Fei leaves it in place rather than risk exposing his true strength by removing it 1 3.
Great Inheritance Tomb
Wu Fei uses his knowledge of Heavenly Dao to guide Jing Fanyu toward valuable opportunities while trying to avoid punishment for disrupting the plot. He shares the Jade Blood Fruit rather than taking the protagonist's original opportunity entirely for himself 7.
After surviving the cave abode's collapse, he discovers the hidden route into the inheritance grounds. He and Jing Fanyu enter two days ahead of the other cultivators and gather most of its treasures. Wu Fei then catches the Soul-Cleansing Nether Fish, receives a Buddhist inheritance, and advances to peak Mahayana 14 19 20 21.
Clear Heart Village
Following Yin Fan in secret, Wu Fei assists him against gray mist with an arrow from the Silent Dust Pearl. Their investigation of the village's ancestral hall leads them into a sealed space 22 24.
Wu Fei deliberately reveals his peak Mahayana cultivation, hoping the resulting tribulation might provide an escape. Instead, his Exquisite Heart begins to fail. Chanting from a mysterious city saves him, and Yin Fan remains beside him throughout his two-month recovery 25.
Heavenly Dao Assembly and Flame Spirit Realm
When Jing Fanyu's identity as Yin Fan is exposed, Wu Fei publicly insists that he is not evil. Backed by Jingguan and the Buddha Spirit Sect disciples, he offers to deliver Yin Fan by offering his body to the demon and leaves with him for the Flame Spirit Realm 29.
While evading their pursuers, Wu Fei agrees to accompany Yin Fan to the Devil Domain. Their journey uncovers an underwater altar, Lu Feiyuan and Yun Huai's remnant souls, and a formation activated by the Silent Dust Pearl—clues Wu Fei believes are connected to his own origins 30 31 32 35 36.
Obstruction Devil and Feigned Corruption
Wu Fei and Yin Fan investigate an ominous seven-tiered altar that Liu Yuexuan activates to summon a force against Yin Fan. During the resulting illusion of Heavenly Clear City, Wu Fei discovers that Jingguan met Yin Fan's parents before the city's massacre and promises to question his master 41 44 45.
When the Obstruction Devil attacks Yin Fan, Wu Fei switches places with him and receives it into his own body. Although he appears to fall into demonic corruption, his Exquisite Heart protects him from the threat. He exploits the apparent change in temperament to express desires that his ordinary persona cannot permit 47 48.
In the Devil Palace, Wu Fei initiates a passionate kiss and reassures Yin Fan that he will not regret their intimacy. He subsequently embraces Yin Fan's unresolved vengeance and hatred as his own concerns 48 50.
