Background / History

Heavenly Clear City Massacre

Yin Fan was nine when Devil Cultivators massacred Heavenly Clear City. His father concealed him behind formations, but his Myriad Spirits Body allowed him to witness both the slaughter and the righteous sect leaders hiding in the void without intervening. His parents, clansmen, and the city's other inhabitants died 29 30.

The onlookers subsequently presented themselves as his rescuers, and the Heavenly Sword Sect master accepted him as a disciple. Their actions were connected to a Heavenly Secrets Fate Disc prophecy identifying him as the only person who might ascend within the next tens of thousands of years. Yin Fan later declared that he had already fallen to the demonic path while watching the massacre 28 30.

Revenge and the Northern Region

Yin Fan pursued the Northern Region's former Devil Venerable, who had been responsible for the massacre. While still at late Spirit Transformation, he killed the Mahayana-stage ruler and claimed his position. His obsession with revenge helped him overcome the difference in cultivation 3 18 50.

He initially devoted little attention to governing his territory; Fu Hong handled much of the work needed to maintain its outward peace. A new Devil Palace was built beside the fissure left by Yin Fan's victory as a display of his power 38 49.

Appearance

Yin Fan has a refined face combining features of his rugged-looking father and graceful mother 31 46.

  • Hair and eyes: Black hair and ink-dark eyes 3 48.
  • Devil Venerable attire: Black robes and a black mask that conceals his identity as Jing Fanyu 8 28.
  • Concealment mask: Later wears a white mask made by Wu Fei from illusion concealment wood 29 30.
  • Gifted spirit robe: A pale white robe with subtly luminous roaming-dragon and auspicious-cloud patterns at the hem and cuffs 49 50.

Personality

Yin Fan maintains sharply contrasting public personas. As Jing Fanyu, he is courteous, gentle, and attentive to visiting disciples. As Devil Venerable, he is mercurial, sarcastic, and openly provocative. He even repeats lurid rumors about his own cruelty while speaking as Jing Fanyu, prompting Wu Fei to question whether those rumors should be believed 4 5 16.

His attachment to Wu Fei combines possessiveness with pronounced insecurity. He threatens to imprison or abduct him, yet repeatedly seeks reassurance that Wu Fei does not regret choosing him. His confidence falters when Wu Fei reciprocates directly, leaving him embarrassed or visibly flustered 19 30 31 48.

His concern also changes his behavior. The sight of Wu Fei's blood initially awakens a destructive impulse; later, a similar injury fills him with panic. He risks revealing his identity to help Wu Fei and hesitates to use soul-searching because he worries Wu Fei will consider it cruel. Even after their intimacy becomes mutual, he fears that Wu Fei may regret it once his apparent demonic corruption passes 25 37 48.

Abilities & Skills

Myriad Spirits Body

An exceptionally rare constitution that Yin Fan conceals even from those close to his righteous identity 30 32.

  • Allowed him to perceive the massacre and the hidden sect leaders through protective formations before he began cultivating 30.
  • Can suppress the harmful effects of the inheritance tomb's nighttime ghost qi 10.
  • Absorbs Spiritual Qi; Wu Fei gives him a Supreme-Grade Spirit Stone to support this process 32.

Swordsmanship

Yin Fan fights with the Blazing Cold Sword, his bonded spirit weapon, which alternates between scorching heat and bone-piercing cold 9 26 46.

  • Killed a Mahayana Devil Venerable while Yin Fan himself was still at Spirit Transformation 3.
  • Helped Wu Fei kill a Spirit Transformation-stage black flood dragon while both were restricted by the inheritance tomb 9.
  • Shattered Cang Xiao's lifebound spirit sword 29.
  • Enlarges into a flying sword capable of carrying both Yin Fan and Wu Fei 31.
  • Shares a mental link with Yin Fan and alerts him to an illusion formation during their travels 36.

Demonic Qi and Spiritual Power

Yin Fan commands demonic qi but can also use pure spiritual power, enabling him to sustain his righteous-cultivator identity 25 28.

  • Appears and disappears amid black mist or surging demonic qi 3 6 22.
  • Leaves dormant demonic qi beneath Wu Fei's skin as a concealed tracker 3 5.
  • Shapes that qi into a cord to attach his miniature flute to Wu Fei's prayer beads 18.
  • Uses pure spiritual power to nourish Wu Fei's injured meridians, though it cannot reach his Exquisite Heart 25.

Formation Knowledge

Yin Fan obtains a formation inheritance in the great inheritance tomb 36.

  • Breaks the illusion formation concealing a Seven Luminaries Sect ambush 36.
  • Possesses enough formation knowledge that the accompanying killing formation poses no effective obstacle to him and Wu Fei 36.
  • Helps uncover the large formation beneath Lu Feiyuan and Yun Huai's peach grove 35.

Soul-Searching

Yin Fan can extract information from a captive's soul 37 38.

  • Uses the technique on a Devil Cultivator serving Mingyu to learn how the Flame Spirit Realm was breached 38.

Resistance to Wu Fei's State of Mind

Unlike others of comparable cultivation, Yin Fan remains unaffected by Wu Fei's perfected, exquisite state of mind. Wu Fei concludes that the reason lies in Yin Fan himself rather than a difference in cultivation 3.
