- Latest stated trajectory: His rings are approaching an eight-black, one-red configuration, but that improvement and the anticipated Demigod breakthrough are not confirmed as completed 137.
- Terminology discrepancy: An earlier passage calls him a “human Demigod,” while later passages explicitly describe him as still approaching that realm 61 132 133 135.
Background
Qian Daoliu belongs to the Qian Family’s Six-Winged Angel lineage. Its founding ancestor, the Angel God, established Spirit Hall after leading humanity against a Soul Beast uprising. The family subsequently became the institution’s symbol and supplied most of its Popes 22.
As a child, he met Meng Zhongqi’s grandfather, the thirteenth Meng Family head—a rank-ninety-seven powerhouse whose group-combat abilities left him with a lasting appreciation of the family’s foundations 21.
In his youth, Qian Daoliu traveled with Tang Chen, including a visit to Sea God Island. Both declined its examinations because they did not wish to remain there permanently. They also competed for Bo Saixi’s affections; her stated condition was that she would be with whichever man first reached Level 100 and became a god 133 137.
By the novel’s opening, Qian Daoliu is Pope and one of the Soul Master World’s Two Peaks alongside Tang Chen. Spirit Hall grows toward its height under his leadership, although he later identifies a worrying gap between its established experts and younger generation 1 4 21.
Personality
Qian Daoliu ordinarily presents himself as a refined, mild-mannered gentleman. Meng Qianqiu initially regards him as an enlightened ruler whose tenure includes beneficial policies rather than major mistakes. His composure breaks when Qian Xunji’s shortsighted Soul Bone choices destroy the possibility of inheriting the Angel God’s position 53 62.
He values strength above office. To him, the papacy is a title whose authority ultimately depends on martial power; preserving Spirit Hall and the Angel Clan matters more than personally retaining the throne. He therefore accepts an outsider as his successor when that offers greater long-term value 53 80.
His concern for humanity coexists with ruthless calculation. He ordinarily recruits human Titled Douluos rather than eliminating them, since their deaths weaken humanity against Soul Beasts. Nevertheless, he preserves institutional checks on Meng Qianqiu and later deliberately directs Tang Chen toward Ye Chenxi, hoping the two will weaken or kill each other 61 88 137.
Abilities & Skills
Six-Winged Angel
- Wields the Six-Winged Angel Martial Soul and is renowned as the strongest in the skies 4.
- The Angel Clan’s inherited Martial Soul is classified as god-bestowed, with innate Soul Power at rank twenty 83.
- His cultivation path emphasizes balance, in contrast to Tang Chen’s pursuit of extremes 19.
Peak-Level Combat
- Possesses Level 99 Soul Power and a hundred-thousand-year ninth Soul Ring 4.
- Fights Tang Chen for more than half a month before losing to the Great Sumeru Hammer with all nine rings detonated 137.
- Forces Tang Chen to exhaust his available methods; Tang Chen describes the result as a costly victory 137.
- Recognizes that Ye Chenxi’s combat strength exceeds his own when they meet 79.
Angel Eight Trials
- Gains substantial strength and improved Soul Ring ages through the Angel God’s examination 62 132.
- Expects completion of the eight trials to make him a mortal Demigod, not a true god 116.
- Lacks an innate Soul Core in the documented assessments. Meng Qianqiu judges that his route forward must instead rely on Divine Armor and divine artifacts to convert Soul Power into Divine Power 88 133.
Political Strategy
- Assesses recruitment through military strength, public reputation, factional alliances, and the cost of creating an enemy 21 80.
- Uses mentorship and succession to bind Meng Qianqiu—and the forces behind him—to Spirit Hall 62 80.
- Preserves the Angel Clan’s independent power through the Worship Hall and a separate law-enforcement institution 88 98.
- Uses information about Slaughter City as bait to redirect Tang Chen toward a dangerous rival 137.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruiting the Meng Family
Meng Zhongqi’s advancement to rank ninety-three, together with his hundred-thousand-year ring and formidable Soul Bone resources, prompts Qian Daoliu to reconsider the Meng Family’s strength. Although personally stronger, he judges Meng Zhongqi’s nation-destroying potential too dangerous to antagonize. He provisionally appoints him fifth elder and orders Golden Crocodile Douluo to oversee his coronation; Qian Daoliu also formally announces his title, Ice Toad Douluo, during the ceremony 21 22.
Choosing a Successor
During the Elite Selection Tournament, Qian Daoliu initially avoids openly backing either Qian Xunji or Meng Qianqiu. After his son absorbs six ten-thousand-year Soul Bones, he explains that the occupied slots prevent absorption of the Angel God Armor’s required bones, cutting off Qian Xunji’s inheritance prospects. He permits the succession contest to continue but explicitly forbids harming Meng Qianqiu or sacrificing Spirit Hall’s interests to private grudges 47 53 54.
After Meng Qianqiu wins the individual tournament, Qian Daoliu praises his cultivation talent and reproducible Martial Soul theories. He offers to become his teacher and promises to invest him as Holy Son after the tournament 62.
Negotiating the Papacy
Ye Chenxi’s arrival changes the negotiations. She seeks to take her son away from Spirit Hall, while Qian Daoliu considers retaining the Meng Family essential to the continental balance. He offers to step down and give Meng Qianqiu the papacy instead. The disciple’s hundred-thousand-year sixth ring reinforces his belief that he is securing a future god for Spirit Hall 79 80.
At the same time, Qian Daoliu prepares an alternative route for Qian Xunji: command of the Angel Legion and a powerful law-enforcement position. He envisages his son succeeding after Meng Qianqiu’s eventual ascension, even if he cannot surpass him directly 63 88.
Abdication and the Three-Hall Structure
After Meng Qianqiu’s Youth Exchange Conference performance, Qian Daoliu confirms the transfer of power. A month later, before the Seven Great Sects and numerous hidden families, he passes the papacy to his disciple and becomes Great Enshrined 98.
| Institution | Function in Qian Daoliu’s arrangement |
|---|---|
| Pope Hall | Placed under Meng Qianqiu’s personal control alongside Spirit Hall’s public leadership 98. |
| Worship Hall | Receives Qian Daoliu and the retiring elders, forming ten Worships in total. Protects the Angel God’s legacy and intervenes in major crises 88 98 99. |
| Elder Hall | Separate law-enforcement institution headed by a Law Enforcement Elder, with the Angel Demon-Extermination Legion under its jurisdiction; designed to provide Qian Xunji with an independent power base 88. |
The arrangement transfers the throne without surrendering all Qian Family forces. Meng Qianqiu accepts despite initially having few personnel of his own 98 100.
Accommodating Meng Qianqiu’s Rise
When Meng Qianqiu reaches Titled Douluo, Qian Daoliu stops Golden Crocodile from targeting him. He cites the disciple’s own combat strength, Ye Chenxi’s future divinity, and his presumed divine backing, then orders the Worship Hall to treat him respectfully 116.
Later, he permits Meng Zhongqi to resign his Worship position to pursue the Sea God’s examination. Believing Meng Zhongqi will succeed Bo Saixi as High Priest, he treats the departure as a potential bond between Spirit Hall and Sea God Island rather than a loss worth contesting 133.
Tang Chen’s Challenge and the Slaughter City Scheme
Tang Chen attacks Spirit Hall to establish his might before leaving to seek godhood. Qian Daoliu intervenes when Golden Crocodile is threatened, but eventually loses their prolonged battle. He nevertheless promises his old companion that Spirit Hall will preserve a thread of the Clear Sky Sect’s bloodline 134 137.
He then reveals Slaughter City’s location and encourages Tang Chen to challenge its ruler. His concealed aim is a clash between Tang Chen and Ye Chenxi in which either outcome benefits Spirit Hall. Tuoba Xuanfeng overhears the conversation and reports it to Meng Qianqiu, who interprets the scheme as an attack on his family and arranges an ambush for Tang Chen 137 138.
A later prospective challenger is Chen Jianjun, who intends to seek his sword Dao by confronting Qian Daoliu; the supplied account records the intention, not the fight 144.
Relationships
- Qian Xunji — His only son. Qian Daoliu rebukes his obsession with the papacy but builds an alternative path to authority for him and continues supporting his cultivation 41 53 63 88 132.
- Meng Qianqiu — Personal disciple and papal successor. Their bond combines genuine admiration with political bargaining, retained checks on authority, and eventual distrust after the Slaughter City scheme 62 80 98 138.
- Tang Chen — Longtime traveling companion, rival, and fellow member of the Two Peaks. Their friendship survives competing allegiances and romantic rivalry, but does not prevent Qian Daoliu from manipulating his search for godhood 133 137.
- Bo Saixi — Old friend and romantic interest encountered on Sea God Island. Her condition concerning godhood remains a motive in his rivalry with Tang Chen 133 137.
- Golden Crocodile Douluo — Senior subordinate and staunch Qian Family supporter. Qian Daoliu entrusts him with major duties but restrains his hostility toward Meng Qianqiu 21 113 116.
- Meng Zhongqi — Powerful recruit whom he handles cautiously; later a fellow divine-examination participant whose resignation he accepts 21 133.
- Ye Chenxi — A stronger ruler whose protection of Meng Qianqiu helps force the papal succession agreement. Later becomes the intended target of his plan to redirect Tang Chen 79 80 137.
