Background / History

Early Cultivation

During his first practice of the Heavenly Cycle Breathing Technique, Wang Hai maintained concentration for fourteen minutes before Origin Power interfered with his focus. This was the best performance in his cohort in Lingnan Province 17.

Recruiting Shen Heng

Wang Hai met Shen Heng in the hospital after the latter survived an encounter with a Mutilated Hound. He explained that Shen Heng had likely awakened through contact with the beast’s Origin Power Crystal, guided him in identifying Hearing Enhancement, and tested it as F-rank 5.

Despite its low rank, Wang Hai invited Shen Heng to join the bureau. He explained the dangers, compensation, training, and registration requirements, while allowing him up to a week to decide 6. When Han Ling questioned the recruitment, Wang Hai argued that the squad lacked perception-based support and could use Shen Heng to locate elusive Calamity Beasts without placing him in direct combat 7.

Shen Heng later sought his advice about Xu Yuqin’s Weak Breath Disease. Wang Hai explained its connection to Origin Power incompatibility and identified a Firmament Breath Beast Lung Crystal as a possible treatment. Shen Heng then agreed to join the bureau to pursue a cure 13.

Training Shen Heng

Wang Hai processed Shen Heng’s contract and instructed him to attend school during the day and cultivate at night until reaching first tier. He also clarified that “director” was his public-facing title and asked Shen Heng to address him as “Captain” 16.

He introduced Shen Heng to the Five Animal Fist and Heavenly Cycle Breathing Technique, later adding firearms practice and unrestricted combat 16 17 32. His sparring lessons combined repeated knockdowns with immediate corrections to balance, force generation, defense, and footwork 33.

After more than ten days, Wang Hai considered Shen Heng’s basic unrestricted combat course complete, although he agreed to continue sparring at Shen Heng’s request 35 36. When Shen Heng reached first tier after twenty-two days, Wang Hai explained the need for bone tempering and personally guided his initial torso-bone cultivation 39 40.

Sewer Rat Beast Encounter

Wang Hai led Han Ling and Wu Cheng into the sewers after a Calamity Beast abducted two people. He kept the unranked Shen Heng above ground under bureau regulations and instructed him and Wei Leyang to guard the entrance 24 25.

The team encountered a Tier 3 rat beast that Wang Hai judged somewhat stronger than himself. He intercepted it, endured its bites with Body of Steel, and restrained it while his teammates attacked. The beast escaped his grip and destroyed the team’s headlamps, leaving them severely disadvantaged in darkness 26 27 28.

After Wu Cheng provided light by burning his clothes and Han Ling detonated an attack inside the beast’s mouth, Wang Hai finished it by driving his hardened arm through its head. He then helped the injured Han Ling out of the sewer and transported her back to the bureau for treatment 28 29.

Unfinished-Building Hunt

During Shen Heng’s first mission after reaching first tier, Wang Hai used his hearing reports to direct the squad through an unfinished building. He initially kept Shen Heng downstairs in a support role. When the team repeatedly failed to see the beast where Shen Heng reported it, Wang Hai began questioning the reports, but ultimately approved Shen Heng’s request to investigate and escorted him upstairs 40 42 43 44.

The target proved to be a Tier 2 beast with wall-climbing, sonic attacks, and exceptionally keen hearing. Wang Hai coordinated attempts to restrict its escape routes and recognized that it had overheard the team’s plan 45 46.

When pursuit remained unsuccessful, he accepted responsibility for a proposed demolition of the building. Shen Heng persuaded him to allow twenty more minutes, during which Wang Hai pursued the beast and reported its position while Shen Heng prepared a concealed plan. After the team killed it, Wang Hai proposed awarding Shen Heng forty percent of the mission points; the others agreed 48 50.

Appearance

• Build: A middle-aged man with prominent muscles, visible when he removes his jacket for sparring 5 33.
• Expression: Usually stern, though he occasionally smiles or jokes with Shen Heng 5 36.
• Ability activation: His skin hardens and develops a faint matte finish when he uses Body of Steel 27.

Personality

Wang Hai is stern without being needlessly authoritarian. He approves when Shen Heng calls emergency dispatch to verify his identity and treats both verification and time to consider recruitment as legitimate rights 5 6. His concern for junior members also shapes his decisions: he restricts Shen Heng’s early field participation and repeatedly emphasizes that intelligence support does not require fighting beasts head-on 23 25 42.

He is observant about behavior as well as combat. He notices that Shen Heng’s maturity conflicts with his school records and later infers that Shen Heng has a hidden objective from an uncharacteristic request to prolong the building hunt 7 50.

As an instructor, Wang Hai favors practical experience over prolonged preparation. He believes controlled sparring makes mistakes memorable, promises to hold back enough to avoid serious injury, and continues coaching Shen Heng when the latter asks for more training 33 36.

Abilities & Skills

Body of Steel

Wang Hai’s A-rank awakened ability hardens his body, allowing him to fight Calamity Beasts without a weapon 18 27.

• Full-body protection: Can harden any part of his body, including his head. The Tier 3 rat beast cannot bite through him, and its claws produce metallic scraping sounds against his skin 27.
• Offensive hardening: Uses his steel-hard arm to pierce the rat beast’s skull 28.
• Restraint: Holds the beast in place while Han Ling and Wu Cheng attack from a distance 27.
• Limitations: The rat beast tears free of his grip. His durability also does not solve the squad’s inability to locate and intercept enemies in complete darkness 27 28.
