| Awakening — half a rank of innate Soul Power | 12 | Awakened Luo Sanpao. Yu Xiaogang describes it as a detrimental mutation; Lin Hao instead identifies it as an interrupted evolution toward a Golden Sacred Dragon. |
| Rank 29 — Soul Grandmaster | 6 12 15 | His documented cultivation during the Sky Screen broadcasts. He attributes his inability to reach rank 30 to Luo Sanpao’s mutation and his low innate Soul Power. No genuine breakthrough is shown. |
- The rank-30 breakthrough and “Fart God” ascension occur only in parody videos. They are not advancements made by the actual Yu Xiaogang 13 14.
Background and History
Origins and Theoretical Reputation
Yu Xiaogang comes from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and possesses its dragon bloodline. His Martial Soul awakening produced golden light, which Yu Yuanzhen later recognizes as evidence of a failed Golden Sacred Dragon awakening after hearing Lin Hao’s explanation 12.
Mocked because of his Martial Soul mutation, Yu Xiaogang built his identity around becoming a theoretical grandmaster. He cites his own experience overcoming ridicule when encouraging Tang San after the exposure of Tang San’s previous life 4.
He formerly had a romantic relationship with Bibi Dong and maintains that they genuinely loved one another before she left him. Lin Hao alleges that Yu Xiaogang approached her to obtain Spirit Hall’s knowledge and assembled his theories from Spirit Hall and his clan’s research; both Yu Xiaogang and Bibi Dong reject that account 13.
Meeting Tang San
At Nuoding Soul Master Academy, Yu Xiaogang intervened in Tang San’s confrontation with the gatekeeper. He described himself as a lodger rather than an academy teacher, then used Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and innate full Soul Power to infer that he possessed a second Martial Soul. Impressed, Tang San kowtowed three times and accepted him as his teacher 8.
Qian Renxue later challenges the reasoning behind this deduction: Yu Xiaogang treated Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass as ordinary grass without recognizing its Blue Silver Emperor bloodline. Lin Hao argues that Tang San’s lack of parental support made the apparently knowledgeable Grandmaster especially convincing 8.
First Soul Ring Expedition
Yu Xiaogang accompanied Tang San into the Soul Hunting Forest. He considered ten-year Lone Bamboo as a fallback ring source, then recommended a nearly four-hundred-year Mandala Snake for its toughness and poison. Tang San agreed to test his Martial Soul Mimicry Theory despite Yu Xiaogang acknowledging that nobody had previously put it into practice 13 15.
Luo Sanpao failed against the snake, forcing Tang San to kill it with Tang Sect techniques. Yu Xiaogang was poisoned and subsequently needed Tang San to treat him. The resulting first Soul Skill, Entanglement, carried paralysis rather than the lethal poison Yu Xiaogang had expected 14 16.
After returning, Yu Xiaogang gave Tang San a book of his cultivation research and advised him to register at Spirit Hall for a monthly Soul Master subsidy 17.
Appearance
- Hair: Short crew cut, frequently used by viewers as the basis for mocking descriptions 8.
- Clothing: Wears black during his first meeting with Tang San in the replayed footage 8.
- Mannerisms: Clasps his hands behind his back when presenting an authoritative judgment; repeatedly flushes and pants heavily when embarrassed or challenged 6 9 13.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang strongly associates his worth with his reputation as a theorist and Tang San’s teacher. Learning that Tang San will attain dual godhood makes him ecstatic, and he eagerly anticipates the entire continent witnessing his supposedly impressive entrance in Tang San’s childhood 2 6.
He can be reassuring toward Tang San, defending him after his previous life is exposed. However, his response to criticism is usually defensive: he dismisses unfavorable broadcasts as slander, insists that he understands Luo Sanpao better than Lin Hao, and becomes furious when Ning Rongrong questions his teaching 4 9 12.
When Tang San begins doubting his judgment, Yu Xiaogang invokes his poisoning as proof of his devotion. When questioned about an exaggerated claim concerning Entanglement, he deliberately pretends to faint to escape further scrutiny 16.
Abilities and Skills
Luo Sanpao
- Manifestation: A round, plump Martial Soul with its own consciousness 12.
- Attacks: Uses flatulence and can attack only three times per round 12.
- Replenishment: Eating white radishes reduces its drain on Yu Xiaogang’s Soul Power; he states that it recovers in an hour 14.
- Demonstrated effectiveness: Kills a pack of Netherworld Wolves with a gas attack. The Shrek students acknowledge that its effectiveness stands out among attacks of the same rank 14.
- Limitations: Its gas is ineffective against the Mandala Snake, which defeats it within a few exchanges 14.
Golden Sacred Dragon Fusion
- Yu Xiaogang can participate in the Golden Iron Triangle’s three-person Martial Soul fusion with Flender and Liu Erlong, producing a Golden Sacred Dragon 12.
- Lin Hao explains that Luo Sanpao already possesses the necessary dragon potential, while the other two participants supply sufficient Soul Power to manifest it 12.
- Mu En, himself a Radiant Sacred Dragon wielder, confirms that Yu Xiaogang possessed that bloodline but followed the wrong cultivation path. He believes an earlier correction might have activated it, but that changing course is now impossible 12.
Martial Soul Theory
| Theory or Claim | Application | Result or Challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Silver Grass with innate full Soul Power indicates another Martial Soul | Used to identify Tang San’s twin Martial Souls 8. | The conclusion is correct, but Qian Renxue disputes its basis because Yu Xiaogang overlooked the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline 8. |
| Martial Soul Mimicry Theory | Proposes that plant Martial Souls can absorb beast-type rings and vice versa; tested through Tang San’s Mandala Snake ring 15. | Tang San successfully absorbs the ring. Critics question choosing it when poisonous, tough plant-type alternatives existed 16. |
| Mandala Snake will provide toughness and poison | Guides Tang San’s first ring selection 15. | Entanglement gains toughness and paralysis, but not the expected lethal poison 16. |
| Entanglement requires an opponent with two additional Soul Rings to break free in one attempt | Used to praise Tang San’s first Soul Skill 16. | Dai Mubai points out that he broke it using White Tiger Vajra Transformation while possessing only one additional ring 16. |
Equipment and Items
- Cultivation research book — Gives Tang San a volume containing his accumulated research on Soul Power cultivation 17.
- Protective mask — Hands Tang San a mask immediately before Luo Sanpao’s attack on the Netherworld Wolves 14.
- White radishes — Uses them to replenish Luo Sanpao and support its gas attacks 14.
Relationships
- Tang San — Disciple and the foundation of his pride as a teacher. The younger Tang San initially regards accepting him as his best decision, but the broadcasts gradually undermine that confidence. His future divine self no longer cares much about him, although he permits Shrek to erect a statue in his honor 4 8 16.
- Bibi Dong — Former lover who continues to defend him. Discovering that Tang San is his disciple prompts her to recall the forces sent to hunt Tang San; she also rejects accusations that Yu Xiaogang exploited her for knowledge 8 12 13.
- Liu Erlong — Golden Iron Triangle partner with romantic feelings for him. Allegations that he deceived Bibi Dong briefly make her question whether he could deceive her as well 12 13.
- Flender — Golden Iron Triangle partner. Lin Hao’s explanation makes him question whether Yu Xiaogang has misunderstood Luo Sanpao’s development for years 12.
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and clan leader. After the dragon-bloodline revelation, he privately resolves to bring Yu Xiaogang back to the clan, but later feels disgraced by the accusations surrounding his theoretical reputation 12 13.
- Tang Hao — Tang San’s father and an increasingly hostile critic. They argue over Tang San’s care, the Mandala Snake hunt, and responsibility for his first-ring choice 11 15.
- Xiao Wu — Student whose Soul Beast identity he fails to recognize. After it is exposed, he falsely claims he knew all along and had nevertheless treated her as his student 6.
- Ning Rongrong — Student and persistent critic who challenges his irresponsibility, ring recommendations, and excuses 9 13 16.
- Lin Hao — Broadcaster whose commentary and selected parody videos repeatedly embarrass him. Yu Xiaogang accuses him of slander and vows to destroy the Sky Screen 12 13 14.
- Tang Wutong — His disciple’s future daughter, who initially does not recognize his name. After watching the first-ring expedition, she condemns his treatment of her father 8 15 16.
Sky Screen Revelations
Collapse of His Reputation
| Broadcast | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Tang San’s future dual godhood | Yu Xiaogang celebrates having raised a god and expects recognition for his teaching 2. |
| Tang Wutong does not recognize him | Undermines his expectation of becoming a divine teacher. The younger Tang San promises to bring him to the Divine Realm 8. |
| His departure during Tang San’s registration | Viewers interpret it as avoiding ridicule while abandoning his new disciple to face it alone. Yu Xiaogang claims he was preparing ring-hunting supplies 9. |
| Tang San nearly choking on his steamed bun | Tang San notices that his teacher sat silently rather than helping. Tang Hao rebukes Yu Xiaogang, who retaliates by criticizing Tang Hao’s parenting 11. |
| Luo Sanpao’s dragon potential and his disputed theories | Flender questions his judgment, Yu Yuanzhen reconsiders his awakening, and later-era Shrek students turn against his legacy 12 13. |
| The first-ring expedition and Entanglement claims | Tang San begins questioning his guidance; Yu Xiaogang invokes his sacrifices and eventually feigns unconsciousness 15 16. |
In the Douluo II timeline, Shrek students initially revere Yu Xiaogang as someone who trained seven gods. The revelations provoke students to spit on his statue and later demand its destruction. Yan Shaozhe confronts one offender but struggles to answer the student’s appeal to Shrek’s own troublemaking philosophy 9 13.
Parody Portrayals
- Luo Sanpao romance meme: Depicts Yu Xiaogang and his Martial Soul gazing lovingly at each other. Ning Rongrong teases him about it, while he denounces the image as an insult 11 12.
- Lone Bamboo ascension: A fictional video shows him reborn after Tang San ascends without him. He then reaches rank 30, absorbs Lone Bamboo, and rides it toward the Divine Realm using Luo Sanpao’s gas as propulsion 13.
- Fart God: The sequel gives him control over everyone’s flatulence and has him intimidate the gods. Both Poseidon and the future Tang San explicitly recognize the scenario as fictional 14.
