Background / History

Family and Upbringing

Bei Bei and Mu Yueye lost their parents while they were very young, after the couple died on a mission. Their parents had intended Mu Yueye to take his father’s surname and grow up under Mu En, while Bei Bei would take his mother’s surname and remain with them. Their deaths left Mu En responsible for both brothers 1.

After their awakening, Mu En deliberately kept the brothers apart. He feared that the difference between their Martial Souls could create conflict and hoped that reuniting them when they were older would help preserve their relationship 6.

Rescuing Tang Ya

Bei Bei intervened when Tang Ya’s pursuers cornered and injured her. Although their leader frightened him, he presented her Shrek Academy admission notice and declared that attacking her would mean making an enemy of the academy. The pursuers recognized Shrek’s seal and withdrew 14.

Mu Yueye had arranged Bei Bei’s intervention to expose him to the violence of the outside world. Mu Yueye, Yan Shaozhe, and Xuan Zi watched from concealment, and Xuan Zi subsequently escorted Bei Bei and Tang Ya safely through her enrollment 14 15.

Entering the Outer Court

Wanting to study alongside Tang Ya, Bei Bei asked Mu Yueye to help persuade Mu En to let him enter the outer court. Mu Yueye refused, explaining that involving him would make their great-great-grandfather even more opposed 15.

Bei Bei nevertheless told Du Weilun that Mu En had already approved his enrollment. Du Weilun assigned him and Tang Ya to the academy’s most senior teacher, whose teaching methods were particularly well regarded. Mu En did not force Bei Bei to return, but Bei Bei subsequently avoided visiting him for a considerable time 24.

The Iron Blood Sect Dispute

When Tang Ya became distressed over her family’s memorial tablets remaining in the Iron Blood Sect’s possession, Bei Bei sought Mu Yueye’s help. His brother supplied an inner-court uniform bearing Bei Bei’s name and instructed him to wear it while demanding their return 24.

The negotiation failed. The sect’s young master and his followers mocked Bei Bei, demanded that Tang Ya come beg on her knees, and beat him after he fought back. Bei Bei returned to Shrek injured, prompting Mu Yueye to accompany him to the sect 25.

Mu Yueye fought the sect’s leaders and refused to settle merely for the tablets’ return after seeing Bei Bei’s bruises. The confrontation ended with Heaven Dou City’s defense captains ordering the Iron Blood Sect to leave the city within three days. Mu Yueye left Bei Bei to handle the remaining arrangements concerning its properties 26 27.

Approval of His Relationship

Mu En later reprimanded Bei Bei for remaining with Tang Ya rather than entering the third year, for which he was already strong enough. Mu Yueye intervened and secured permission for their relationship, while retaining control of the Tang Sect’s properties until Tang Ya could protect them 27 28.

Bei Bei also received his family’s approval to join the Tang Sect. Unbeknownst to him, Mu Yueye privately threatened Tang Ya into promising not to ask anything of Bei Bei. Mu Yueye made the return of the sect’s foundation conditional on the couple defeating him together and ordered her to conceal the confrontation 28 29.

Personality

Bei Bei can act despite fear: during Tang Ya’s rescue, his heart pounds after her pursuer threatens him, but he maintains a solemn front and confronts the group. He is less adept at understanding political influence, remaining uncertain about how much protection Shrek’s inner-court uniform should provide 14 25.

His devotion to Tang Ya makes him unusually stubborn with his family. He bypasses Mu En’s objections to study with her, seeks help over her family’s memorial tablets, and asks Mu Yueye to give her a chance despite the elders’ reservations. Even so, he remains deferential to his older brother; a stern look from Mu Yueye is enough to stop him arguing at a crucial moment 24 28.
