Background / History
Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect as the son of its sect master, Yu Yuanzhen. His half-level Innate Soul Power and apparently malignant Martial Soul mutation made him an object of ridicule within his family and among his peers. Although disappointed, his father continued supplying cultivation resources rather than abandoning him. Those resources enabled Xiaogang to reach Soul Grandmaster despite his poor aptitude 6.
He previously had a romantic relationship with Bibi Dong. When she visited him at Nuoding Academy, he recalled her saying that he was unworthy of her and that their relationship was over. Bibi Dong maintained that she had acted for reasons she could not explain. Qian Daoliu later revealed that “Ji’er” had agreed to spare Xiaogang’s life on the condition that Bibi Dong cease contacting him 5 7.
At Nuoding Academy, Xiaogang sought a gifted disciple whom he could raise into a peerless expert, thereby validating his reputation as a Grandmaster of Martial Soul Theory. His deeper personal ambition, according to Bibi Dong, was to evolve Luo Sanpao into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon 4 5.
Appearance
- Build: Thin 8.
- Hair: Short crew cut, also described as flat-topped 8 13.
- Expression: Habitually stiff; he sometimes deliberately adopts a profound, inscrutable look 5 13.
- Clothing: Black academic gown or scholar’s robe 8 13.
Personality
Xiaogang is intensely concerned with overcoming the label of “trash.” He hopes a powerful disciple will vindicate his learning and restore his standing. His level-thirty breakthrough brings him to his knees in tears as he declares that he has not disgraced his father or sect 5 6 7.
He takes pride in his intelligence and theoretical authority, claiming that no one surpasses him in Martial Soul Theory. His confidence is easily shaken when Xu Nuo questions why that expertise had not solved his own cultivation limitations 5 7.
His approach to wishes combines caution with overconfidence. He correctly recognizes that wishes carry costs, but assumes a modest breakthrough wish can cause no worse than recoverable internal injuries. After Luo Sanpao’s transformation, he struggles with the humiliation of potentially having to perform its fart-based skills himself 5 6.
Although privately resentful of Xu Nuo’s refusal to become his disciple, Xiaogang tells Tang San not to hold that refusal against him. He instead recommends cultivating a useful relationship with Xu Nuo because of the Wishing Divine Lamp’s abilities 9.
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Luo Sanpao undergoes a fundamental change when Xiaogang wishes to reach level thirty 6.
| Feature | Before the Wish | After the Wish |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Small, unusual purple beast | Fat purple pig beast |
| Manifestation | Intelligent beast existing outside Xiaogang’s body | Ordinary Beast Martial Soul |
| Martial Soul Possession | Unable to possess Xiaogang | Capable of possession |
| Golden Sacred Dragon Origin | Present within Luo Sanpao | Removed as payment and obtained by Xu Nuo |
| Soul Skill delivery | Luo Sanpao performed the skills externally | Xiaogang must perform them himself |
- Both of his existing Soul Skills are fart-based; their names and precise effects are not provided 6.
- Xiaogang initially hopes the transformation might also have changed those skills, but later acknowledges that he must use them personally 6 16.
- He regards Luo Sanpao becoming a conventional Beast Martial Soul as an “evolution,” unaware that its Golden Sacred Dragon Origin has been taken 6.
Martial Soul Theory and Instruction
Xiaogang presents himself as the foremost authority on Martial Soul Theory, though Xu Nuo privately disputes both his reputation and his training methods 7.
- Talent recognition: Tang San credits him with identifying his Innate Full Soul Power and Twin Martial Souls from a Martial Soul certificate 9.
- Foundational instruction: Teaches Tang San basic Soul Master knowledge and emphasizes the importance of Soul Ring selection 12 13.
- Soul Ring guidance: Recommends a Hundred-Year First Soul Ring and arranges a hunting trip to the Soul Hunting Forest 12 13.
- Wish strategy: Proposes having another person make a wish on the beneficiary’s behalf so that the substitute bears the cost. This remains an untested proposal in the supplied events 14.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Level-Thirty Wish
Bibi Dong brings Xu Nuo to Nuoding Academy to help Xiaogang evolve Luo Sanpao, hoping the favor will ease his resentment toward her. After hearing examples of earlier wishes and their consequences, Xiaogang chooses the supposedly safer request of immediately reaching level thirty 4 5.
The wish breaks his decades-long bottleneck, but its payment transforms Luo Sanpao and transfers its Golden Sacred Dragon Origin and much of Xiaogang’s stored medicinal power to Xu Nuo. Xiaogang first celebrates the breakthrough, then realizes the embarrassing implications of using Luo Sanpao’s skills through possession 6. The stolen medicinal power later contributes to Xu Nuo’s advancement to level thirteen 14.
Seeking a Genius Disciple
Recognizing Xu Nuo’s rare Fate Attribute Martial Soul and Innate Full Soul Power, Xiaogang offers to take him as a disciple. Xu Nuo counters by questioning Xiaogang’s cultivation record, and Qian Daoliu’s arrival interrupts the exchange 7.
Xiaogang subsequently accepts Tang San, whose Innate Full Soul Power and Twin Martial Souls satisfy his desire for an exceptional pupil. Tang San formally acknowledges him by kneeling and kowtowing three times 8 9.
Tang San’s First Soul Ring
Xiaogang prepares to help Tang San obtain his First Soul Ring, only to learn that his disciple has already absorbed a ten-year stink bug ring overnight. The discovery shocks him, particularly because he had recommended a Hundred-Year ring 12 13.
After Tang San gives him an incomplete account of the wish behind the incident, Xiaogang suggests using a substitute wish-maker to shift the price onto someone else. Tang San considers using this approach to replace his unwanted first Soul Skill 14.
Arranging Tang Hao’s Wish
Tang Hao asks Xiaogang to bring Xu Nuo to his dormitory. Xiaogang obeys despite privately worrying about the consequences of wishes, deciding not to voice his concerns because Tang Hao presumably already understands the risks 15 16.
He introduces Tang Hao only as a senior acquaintance from the Soul Master World. Tang Hao makes his wish there and later leaves through the window when no immediate healing occurs. After his injuries worsen, he returns and takes Tang San away while the boy is walking with Xiaogang 16 17.
Relationships
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and sect master. Continued financing Xiaogang’s cultivation despite disappointment in his aptitude 6.
- Bibi Dong — Former girlfriend who remains devoted to him. Arranges his meeting with Xu Nuo and shields him when Qian Daoliu arrives 4 5 7.
- Xu Nuo — Grants his breakthrough wish and secretly benefits from its payment. Xiaogang unsuccessfully seeks to recruit him as a disciple 6 7 9.
- Tang San — Disciple whom Xiaogang hopes to develop into a peerless expert. Provides him with cultivation guidance and a dagger later used during Tang Hao’s crisis 9 12 18.
- Tang Hao — Tang San’s father, whom Xiaogang respectfully addresses as “Your Excellency Haotian.” Xiaogang acts as his intermediary with Xu Nuo 15 16.
- Qian Daoliu — Openly contemptuous of Xiaogang. Knows his whereabouts through his history of collecting Soul Master subsidies and confronts Bibi Dong at his room 7.
