History

Highborne Origins

The High Elves trace their ancestry back roughly ten thousand years to the Kaldorei of ancient Kalimdor. Queen Azshara and the Highborne drew extensively on the Well of Eternity, eventually attracting the Burning Legion. After the Well's destruction, the surviving Night Elves adopted druidic leadership and prohibited magical practice. The surviving Highborne rebelled against that prohibition, failed, and were exiled by the archdruids 10.

Founding of Quel'Thalas

Approximately four thousand years before the main story, Dath'Remar Sunstrider led the exiles to Lordaeron. They founded Quel'Thalas in its northeastern reaches and adopted the name High Elves to distinguish themselves from the Night Elves. They also created the Sunwell, whose magical energy sustained the growth of their civilization 10.

Their settlement brought them into conflict with the Forest Trolls. Under Dath'Remar, the elves defeated an Amani army ten times their size, but neither side eliminated the other, and warfare continued for thousands of years 10.

Alliance with Arathor

During Anasterian's reign, an unprecedented Troll offensive threatened Quel'Thalas with destruction. Anasterian proposed an alliance with the human Empire of Arathor, believing humans possessed latent magical talent. Elven mages trained human spellcasters, and their combined forces defeated the Trolls 10.

The High Elves pledged loyalty and friendship to Thoradin's bloodline in gratitude. Nearly a thousand years of peace followed before the surviving Trolls began another war, approximately two hundred years before Kael'thas's childhood 10.

Appearance and Physiology

  • Typical features: Golden hair, blue eyes, delicate faces, and slender builds are presented as characteristic High Elf traits 19.
  • Hair variation: Pure silver hair is relatively rare; Kael'thas's mother possesses it 36.
  • Agility: High Elves are natural climbers. Kael'thas and Audilon use their agility to move between trees while concealing their escape route 48.
  • Senses: Kael'thas's High Elf body can hear falling leaves thirty meters away and readily track moving animals, despite his limited physical strength 41.
  • Physical limitations: Relatively few High Elves possess the physique needed for purely melee professions 34.

Aging

High Elves retain youthful appearances for most of their lives and do not develop a visibly elderly stage 10.

Age Development and Appearance
Before 15 Grow much like humans 10
15–300 Retain a youthful appearance 10
After 300 Attain mature elven appearance, resembling a human of about twenty; remain largely unchanged for the following dozen or so centuries 10
Final approximately 500 years Appear middle-aged, resembling a human of about forty 10

Society and Government

Sunstrider Rule

  • Royal authority: All High Elves pledge allegiance to the Sunstrider Dynasty, which possesses the authority to determine the kingdom's fate 18.
  • Civil administration: Noble officials form the Silvermoon Council, also called the Silvermoon Committee, which handles matters throughout the kingdom 11 18.
  • Institutional continuity: The monarchy and aristocratic administration have functioned together since Quel'Thalas's founding, supported by long lifespans and inherited social traditions 18.
  • Royal accessibility: The Sunstriders are not socially distant from their people. Public etiquette emphasizes royal dignity tempered by humility 18.

Nobility and Social Mobility

High Elf society is relatively egalitarian despite having a noble class. Nobles rise through military accomplishments and other contributions, while their children normally receive the same treatment as commoners. Continuing a noble surname requires genuine talent rather than ancestry alone 21.

The Sunstriders are the principal exception. Their position rests on leading the exiles to Lordaeron, founding Quel'Thalas, and maintaining the people's confidence over thousands of years 21.

Culture

  • Pride: The narrative describes pride and arrogance as widespread High Elf traits, including in their attitudes toward other races 40.
  • Sun imagery: Formal greetings invoke sunlight, and the reigning monarch bears the title Sun King 18 26.
  • Refinement: Even on campaign, elves prefer comfortable arrangements and properly prepared meals when circumstances allow 40.
  • Music: Kael'thas's performances attract large audiences in Silvermoon. His administrative achievements and those of Kael'sala also inspire the human bardic song Golden Age 18 19.
  • Funerary customs: Priests sing the Lament of the Highborne to mourn the fallen. Whenever possible, soldiers recover their dead and return them to their homeland for burial 50.

Abilities and Skills

Innate Magical Affinity

High Elves are known as the children of magic, and every High Elf knows magic. Their bodies are closely adapted to magical energy, but the extent of their control depends on physical development 15.

  • Ordinary High Elves generally begin training at twenty and become novice professionals around thirty 14.
  • Systematic Initial Stage training requires at least an adolescent physique, normally reached at fifteen. Attempting it too early can do more harm than good 15.
  • Native practitioners improve through accumulated training rather than experience points. Joining Kael'thas's party is an exceptional means of gaining experience under his system 14.
  • Humans can attain in years or decades magical proficiency that may take High Elves centuries or millennia, because elven advancement is constrained by bodily growth 15.

Arcane Tradition

Traditional High Elf Arcane mages regard Arcane as the root of all magic. Fire, frost, nature, and other schools are understood as different manifestations of the same underlying energy 17.

  • Their education emphasizes understanding magical principles and creating spells rather than simply inheriting powerful techniques 19.
  • Aspiring Arcane mages walk the Path of Arcane under a mentor's guidance 16.
  • Completing the path evaluates the candidate; talented elves receive recognition from Arcane energy and become true High Elf Arcane mages 17.
  • This recognition grants an exceptional advantage in using Arcane, distinguishing them from ordinary spellcasters who merely employ Arcane spells 17.
  • An Arcane Orb represents this status, but is rare even among gifted practitioners 17.

Arcane Erosion and Dependence

Arcane use is deeply embedded in High Elf culture and physiology. Its allure can erode the body and corrupt the mind when abused, a danger Mephistes openly acknowledges 17.

  • High Elf ancestors refused to abandon Arcane because they regarded it as sacred, essential, and the source from which other spells derive 17.
  • Mephistes believes their research could overcome Arcane erosion within another thousand years; this is an expectation, not an achieved immunity 17.
  • Kael'thas's memories of magic addiction after the Sunwell's loss reveal the potential consequences of that dependence 17.

Kingdom-Wide Enchantment

The High Elves maintain a vast magical barrier around Quel'Thalas, described by Mephistes as their greatest magical creation 17.

  • Conceals their kingdom's magical activity from demonic observation 17.
  • Enhances High Elf magic within its boundaries and weakens entering enemies to some extent 17.
  • Does not physically prevent an invasion 17.
  • Arcane mages can also detect intruders by connecting with Sunwell energy flowing through the land and sensing foreign forces that have crossed it 42.

Available Professions

Category Presence Among High Elves
Magic-using professions More than 90% of professional class holders belong to magic-using classes 34
Rangers Capable of both ranged and close combat, though not substitutes for dedicated melee troops 34
Warriors and rogues Extremely rare because few elves have suitable physiques; too scarce to form a separate unit 34
Paladins Rumors suggest one or two elves adopted the profession through contact with humans 34
Unavailable professions Shamans, Druids, Death Knights, and Monks 34

Military

Organization

The regular army has used a three-tier structure since Quel'Thalas's founding 40.

Formation Typical Size
Squad 30–40 members 40
Unit Several squads, generally no more than 200 members 40
Legion No fixed size 40

Forces and Equipment

  • Silvermoon Rangers: Responsible for defending the capital 11.
  • Farstriders: A small elite ranger force renowned for defending Quel'Thalas's borders. Their supreme commander bears the title Ranger-General of Quel'Thalas 24.
  • Dragonhawk force: Prestigious aerial troops generally deployed on important missions. Membership requires at least the middle stage of the advanced professional rank—approximately level 60 or higher on Kael'thas's scale 28.
  • Hawkstriders: Colorful, large birds with long tail feathers; the customary High Elf mounts and symbols of Quel'Thalas's beauty 10.
  • Ranger equipment: Light armor, a hooded cloak, longbow, quiver, rapier, gloves, boots, pouch, and horn 21.

Defense Against the Trolls

The main battlefield lies on the road out of Zul'Aman, but Troll parties also cross the surrounding mountains to attack the vulnerable elven interior. An infiltration campaign more than two hundred years earlier caused severe damage and nearly destroyed the High Elves' front-line position 40.

Zul'jin's forces developed a potion that conceals weaker rogues from Sunwell-based detection. The elves responded with stronger mountain defenses, extensive traps, and rear-area patrols staffed by recruits, since the potion cannot conceal more powerful infiltrators 42.

Their limited population makes recruit preservation especially important. The intensified offensive nevertheless forces inadequately trained young elves onto the battlefield 38.

Foreseen Fate

Kael'thas remembers a history in which Dar'Khan betrays Quel'Thalas, its defenses are opened, and the Undead Scourge destroys the kingdom. Ninety percent of its elves die, with further losses caused by division and magic addiction after the Sunwell's disappearance. The survivors rename themselves Blood Elves 17.

These events are a remembered future, not an accomplished outcome in the supplied story. Kael'thas commits himself to changing that fate, while Mephistes independently expects his disciple to prevent Dar'Khan from claiming the Sunwell 15 17.
