Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Level 1 9 Reborn with a damaged character system. Possesses Arcane Torrent, Magic Resistance, and Summon Phoenix, but his class is damaged and his identity field is locked.
Level 10 10 Reaches this level through fishing experience over eight years. Further leveling is blocked, and he still lacks attack skills.
Independent skill-learning template 11 Learning Frostbolt triggers the damaged mage template. He accepts an independent-learning replacement that destroys the ordinary class templates.
Level 11 12 Advances by hunting creatures in Eversong Woods. His guards judge him ready for the late-beginner training grounds at Sunsail Anchorage.
Master of Flames 12 Activates while using Fireball against a murloc; permanently increases fire damage by 10%.
Level 14 14 Reached after half a month of coastal murloc training and additional fire-magic lessons from Kael'sala.
Level 15 14 Defeats the murloc captain and completes the associated quest, receiving 3,000 experience.
Seven-year experience lock 15 A study quest repairs the quest-reward system but locks his experience for seven years. Mephistes recognizes him as an eight-year-old Initial Stage prodigy.
High Elf Arcane Mage 16 17 Recognizes Arcane as the source of all spells and accepts the hidden class. Gains a permanent independent learning/creation template and achieves Arcane recognition before finishing the Path of Arcane.
King of Music; experience unlocked 19 20 Completes Child's Concert after seven years. Receives King of Music and resumes experience gain at level 15.
Level 16, subsequently approaching level 20 27 His Fireball becomes markedly stronger after level 16. Repeated Troll-rogue ambushes bring him just short of level 20.
Level 20 31 Completing Investigate the Amani Catacombs grants 4,000 experience. His mana lake expands, reducing Frostbolt and Fireball costs from 5% to 3% of total mana; Magic Resistance reaches +10.
Middle stage of the junior professional 33 Mephistes explicitly recognizes this rank. Kael'thas has modified roughly half of Fireball's structure and exchanges six older spells for five new ones and a storage necklace.
Weapon Mastery System 34 His plan to combine magic and swordplay triggers the Enchant Weapon quest chain and repairs weapon mastery. One-handed sword mastery begins at ordinary.
Level 22 42 Reaches this level during woodland patrols and completes his analysis of Fireball.
First self-created combat technique 44 Incorporates Fireball into his rune sword. The result is not a true enchantment, but it successfully burns a Troll rogue and prevents Stealth.
Level 25 50 Confirmed after Audilon's death. The passage does not specify which reward or encounter supplied the final experience.

Background / History

Previous Life and Rebirth

As Bai Jing, he spent much of his childhood without close parental care. His parents divorced, and after his father remarried, he was sent to live alone with financial support. These experiences left him unfamiliar with parental affection despite his outward optimism 35.

He died after taking Ashes of Al'ar in a World of Warcraft loot dispute: an enraged player struck him with a computer tower. Reborn into the Sunstrider court, he was named Kael'thas by Anasterian and immediately recognized the name as that of the tragic prince he knew from the game 9.

Royal Upbringing

Anasterian entrusted his upbringing to Kael'sala. Until age five, Kael'thas remained within Sunfury Spire, studying literacy and etiquette rather than magic. After completing those lessons, he spent three years accompanying Kael'sala on outings and fishing, becoming increasingly graceful and composed 9 10.

At eight, his maturity persuaded Kael'sala to begin magical instruction earlier than planned. Liadrin was selected as his companion and protector so that he could gain practical experience without relying on guards whose much higher levels prevented him from earning combat experience 10 11.

Seven Years of Study

After his first training expeditions, Kael'thas studied under Mephistes for seven years. His education emphasized Arcane principles and spell construction, alongside geography, languages, and culture. Rather than accumulating ready-made spells, he was expected to understand and eventually create magic himself 15 18 19.

Kael'sala also trained him in government. His proposals included a waterway improvement modeled on his previous world that saved Silvermoon considerable magical energy. His reputation as an enlightened, forward-looking administrator helped earn the two princes the name “Twin Jades of the High Elves,” celebrated by human bards in the song Golden Age 19.

Appearance

By fifteen, Kael'thas has a tall, slender build, waist-length golden hair, finely sculpted features, and deep blue eyes. His beauty repeatedly attracts attention from other elves 11 19.

  • Clothing: Brightly colored mage robes 38.
  • Armament: A red-glowing rune sword worn at his waist 38.
  • Companion: A golden, flame-wreathed phoenix commonly rests on his shoulder 38.
  • Public bearing: His relaxed confidence and sunlike presence inspire younger recruits, who regard him as an example of how High Elves should conduct themselves 38.

Personality

Kael'thas develops a courteous, calm princely manner under Kael'sala's care. He treats Liadrin gently despite her awkward introduction, dislikes the distance that royalty creates between himself and other children, and willingly joins his squad's food preparation instead of accepting an elevated seat 10 11 18 41.

He is curious and inventive, with ambitions extending beyond court life. He dreams of traveling freely across the continent, applies knowledge from his former world to administration, and seeks ways to compensate for physical weakness through magic 19 34.

His attachment to the High Elves becomes a commitment to change their fate. Remembering the destruction of Quel'Thalas and the suffering of the Blood Elves, he resolves to protect both his people and his own future. Nevertheless, discrepancies between this world and the history he remembers leave him deeply uneasy 17 20 29.

His early confidence also conceals a dangerous detachment: the system encourages him to treat the world like a game, and he initially regards enemy Trolls as monsters rather than lives he is taking. Audilon's death breaks through that outlook. He openly weeps, stays awake through the night, and appears markedly more mature the following morning 32 38 49 50.

Abilities & Skills

Damaged Game System

Kael'thas possesses a character interface with levels, experience, skills, traits, quests, relationship ratings, and repairable subsystems 9 11 20 34.

  • Quest generation: Quests arise both from requests made by other people and from his own actions or thoughts 22.
  • Independent learning: His replacement template allows him to learn skills outside the failed standard mage template; his hidden Arcane class later supplies a permanent learning/creation framework 11 16.
  • Relationship information: The interface distinguishes loyalty from favorability, recording values such as Liadrin's loyalty of 80 and Kael'sala's favorability of 98 11 20.
  • Limitations: Several fields remain damaged or locked. The system does not automatically provide new skills at level 20, and it cannot preserve spells whose incantations Mephistes erases from his memory 31 33.

Arcane Affinity and Spell Research

His exceptional Arcane affinity allows him to perceive frost, fire, lightning, natural forces, and runes within the Path of Arcane. Mephistes regards his early recognition as an Arcane mage as unprecedented 16 17.

  • Lord of Arcane: Increases Arcane damage and effects by 10% 20.
  • Spell analysis: Studies the underlying combinations of spells rather than relying solely on memorized incantations. He first adds a lighting effect to Fireball, then completes its analysis 33 42.
  • Arcane Orb: Demonstrably stores a Fireball for later release, enabling closely timed successive attacks 27 47.
  • Mana limitation: His small, barrier-bound mana lake initially restricts prolonged combat and advanced casting. Its first barrier breaks at level 20, expanding his reserves 24 31.

Fire Magic and Spell-Infused Swordplay

Fire becomes his preferred offensive specialization after the activation of Master of Flames 12.

  • Master of Flames: Permanently increases fire damage by 10%. With his bonuses combined, the text credits him with a 20% fire-spell enhancement 20 27.
  • Fireball: Deals direct damage and leaves a burning effect. Burning exposes concealed Troll rogues and prevents them from returning to Stealth 23 44.
  • Flamestrike: Creates an area-wide storm of flames, addressing his shortage of area attacks 33.
  • Sword infusion: Channels Fireball through his rune sword, releasing burning fragments with a slash. He uses this to injure a pursuing leopard's eyes 44 47.
  • Limits: His technique remains crude, and a stronger Troll rogue can withstand the scattered flames through toughness and regeneration. Fire also cancels frost-based freezing effects 12 44 47.

Control, Mobility, and Survival Magic

His repertoire emphasizes interruption, repositioning, and escape rather than direct shielding 33.

  • Arcane Torrent: Instantly silences enemies within 10 yards for six seconds and restores 1% of total mana per second; has a ten-minute cooldown 20.
  • Magic Resistance: Rises from +5 at birth to +7 during early training and +10 at level 20 9 11 31.
  • Blink: Instant short-range relocation with a ten-second cooldown; useful for both gathering herbs and escaping melee attacks 22 23.
  • Counterspell: Retained during his spell exchange because of its emergency value 33.
  • Arcane Explosion: Instantly releases a circular blast that knocks nearby enemies away 33.
  • Polymorph: Turns a target into a random animal but helps it recover from injuries. It has little chance of working against a substantially stronger opponent 33 47.
  • Invisibility: Learned as part of Mephistes's replacement spell set 33.
  • Discarded spells: Frostbolt, Ice Lance, Scorch, Fire Blast, Molten Armor, and Frost Nova are erased from his memory in exchange for new abilities and equipment 33.

Conjuration and Resource Management

Kael'thas retains practical magic for supplying himself and extending his endurance 33.

  • Conjure Food: Produces food for himself and allies; at level 20, it has a 2.4-second cast and costs 3% of total mana 31.
  • Conjure Mana Gem: Stores mana and absorbs ambient Arcane energy. A gem can replenish his mana three times 33.
  • Defensive dependence: The replacement spell set contains no shield spell, leaving Liadrin's protection especially important 23 33 44.

Phoenix Summoning

Summon Phoenix calls one phoenix to fight for him. His first attempt produces Xiao Ao as a tiny golden chick and exhausts him into unconsciousness 9.

  • Combat use: Xiao Ao draws enemy attacks and contributes Fire Blasts 13 23.
  • Coordination: Kael'thas coordinates the phoenix's attacks with Liadrin's shielding and crowd control 13 23.
  • Mutation: A form-mutation reward places Xiao Ao into seven years of egg-like dormancy. Mephistes safeguards it during that period 16.

Disguise and Languages

His language studies earn him the Disguiser title, later used to assume an Amani Troll's form 19 28 31.

  • Convincing appearance: The transformation briefly deceives even Kael'sala's sharp ranger senses 28.
  • Infiltration: Uses the disguise to investigate the Amani Catacombs 28 31.
  • Limit: Physical disguise does not resolve every communication problem; Kael'sala arranges linguistic assistance 28.

Music

Kael'thas plays a magically preserved leaf as a wind instrument. Seven years of performances in Silvermoon's Royal Trade District earn him King of Music 18 19.

  • King of Music: Makes his music beautiful and moving across racial boundaries 20.
  • Public appeal: His concerts become so popular that Anasterian charges admission, earning more than the district's former trade taxes 19.
  • Morale: A lakeside performance moves his squad to recall Quel'Thalas and proclaim loyalty to their homeland and prince 41.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Fire-enchanted rune sword — An ordinary longsword purchased and inscribed with fire runes by Revil Kost. It becomes the basis of Kael'thas's experimental Fireball-infused sword technique 29 33 44.
  • Storage necklace — A four-cubic-meter storage item given by Mephistes. Its first activation binds its use to Kael'thas; protective magic prevents it from falling off and makes it difficult to destroy. It can contain living creatures, but its sealed interior has no air 33.
  • Preserved leaf instrument — Kept from his first public concert; residual magic prevents it from withering 18 41.
  • Basic runic textbook — Mephistes's instructional book on characters used in weapon enchanting. Kael'thas studies it while practicing sword movements 35.
  • Xiao Bai — A snow-white Hawkstrider raised by the queen and gifted to him. He forms a riding contract with it, and it later carries him through the Troll rogue's pursuit 35 47.
  • Immobilization scroll — Used to pin an advanced Troll rogue to a tree long enough for his party to begin escaping 46.

Relationships

  • Anasterian Sunstrider — Father and king. Names Kael'thas, entrusts him to Kael'sala, and later intervenes to remove him from Sylvanas's squad 9 39.
  • The queen — Mother. Kael'thas has never met her by the time she sends him Xiao Bai; he knows her appearance only through photographs 35.
  • Kael'sala / Sylvanas — His publicly acknowledged elder brother, guardian, and administrative teacher. In truth, Kael'sala is a woman living under a princely identity. Her familial affection develops into possessive romantic attachment, which Kael'thas does not understand. He separately develops feelings for her female appearance as the girl who watches his concerts, later meeting her as Commander Sylvanas 19 26 37 38.
  • Mephistes — Arcane mentor and guardian of the High Elves. Cultivates Kael'thas's potential as a spell creator, restricts excessive reliance on inherited skills, and directs his early melee training 15 19 33 34.
  • Liadrin — Priest companion and protector. Shields and heals him through his early battles; her attachment eventually begins to extend beyond loyalty, accompanied by jealousy toward Solarian 11 23 44.
  • Alleria — Ranger captain and initial Ghostlands commander. Keeps him away from the front as an inexperienced recruit but reunites him with Liadrin despite Kael'sala's wishes 21 22.
  • Solarian — Astromancer who believes she is destined to serve him. Her loyalty reaches 90 upon reporting to him; Kael'thas especially values her because he remembers her original counterpart's unwavering allegiance 37 39.
  • Audilon — Sword instructor and devoted warrior protector. Dies intercepting the Troll rogue's final attack, asking Kael'thas to live like a sun 34 49.
  • Lor'themar Theron — Kael'sala's female adjutant and an unseen childhood companion. Her extraordinary lack of presence prevents Kael'thas from recognizing her; he later mistakes her covert assistance for a haunting 21 30 32.
  • Revil Kost — Council of Tirisfal elder who gives him his fire-enchanted sword. His disclosure that Medivh is Guardian renews Kael'thas's fear that remembered history may repeat 29.
  • Xiao Ao — Phoenix companion summoned at birth. Their daily companionship makes its seven-year dormancy painful for Kael'thas 9 16.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Beginner Training

  • Eversong Woods: Begins practical combat with Liadrin, quickly outgrowing the weak creatures maintained for elven children 12.
  • Sunsail Anchorage: Develops coordinated tactics against murlocs, using Xiao Ao to draw attacks and Liadrin to protect him 13.
  • Seabed lair: Rescues a baby turtle, whose intervention breaks the murloc captain's shield. After winning, Kael'thas rejects the Murloc King quest and deduces that the elves have engineered and secretly supervised the training grounds 14.

Ghostlands and the Amani Catacombs

  • Recruit assignment: Arrives expecting adventure but is assigned herb gathering at Suncrown Village under Alleria's protective arrangements 20 21.
  • First true enemy: Survives a Troll rogue's ambush with Liadrin and Xiao Ao. A crude map and the enemy's unexpected presence lead him to suspect a hidden route through the Amani Catacombs 23 24.
  • Investigation: Hunts infiltrating rogues, reports their origin to Kael'sala, and infiltrates the catacombs in disguise 27 28 31.
  • Surveillance mission: Lor'themar secretly places surveillance balls on an altar for him. Unable to perceive her, he concludes that a ghost is helping—and haunting—him 32.

Front-Line Patrols

  • Sanctum of the Sun: Reaches the front and discovers that the girl from his concerts is Commander Sylvanas. Royal orders promptly transfer him and Audilon to another team, where Liadrin and Solarian join them 38 39.
  • Squad command: Leads hunting, food preparation, woodland surveys, trap placement, and searches for infiltrating Troll rogues 41 42.
  • Detection breakthrough: During an ambush, identifies moss as the likely means by which Trolls conceal the elves' detection powder. He also successfully tests his first original sword-and-spell technique 44.

Pursuit and Audilon's Death

  • Advanced enemy: A powerful Troll rogue appears after a signal flare. He had expected to find Kael'sala, not the younger prince 44 45.
  • Escape: Kael'thas delays him with a scroll, orders the party to scatter, and flees with Audilon on Xiao Bai. Fire-infused sword attacks disable the pursuer's leopard, but the Troll continues on foot 46 47.
  • Sacrifice: Audilon repeatedly places himself between the prince and the Troll, ultimately intercepting a fatal dagger strike as Sylvanas's rescuers arrive 49.
  • Aftermath: Kael'thas grieves openly and asks where Audilon's remains will be laid to rest, learning that his home is Fairbreeze Village. By morning, he has reached level 25 and displays a newly mature bearing 49 50.
