Biodata
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Name | Oni |
| Original Name | 鬼族 |
| Species/Race | Naturally powerful demi-human race 22 |
| Settlement | A secluded village in a mana-rich forest near Lugunica’s border 7 8 |
| Leader | Village chief Setanta 7 |
| Strongest Known Member | Ram, revered as the “Oni God Reborn” 6 |
| First Appearance | Ram manifests her horn and identifies herself and Rem as Oni 5 |
Power Progression
The clearest documented example of Oni awakening is Rem’s development.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unawakened — Rem | 7 11 24 | Considered the weakest Oni apart from newborns. At seven, she cannot match a four-year-old learning magic, but can still repel lesser Witchbeasts with rudimentary mana shock waves. |
| First shaped magic — Rem | 30 | After witnessing Subaru being swallowed, she produces an icicle for the first time. Her uncontrolled temperature manipulation injures her own hand with both frostbite and burns. |
| Horn awakening — Rem | 30 | Manifests a white horn, rapidly absorbs atmospheric mana, and fully awakens her self-healing ability. Her increased strength and magic allow her to bombard the giant crocodile with icicles and crack its horn. |
Appearance
- Humanlike features: Without manifested horns, the villagers appear entirely human to Subaru, with no unusual skin colors or additional limbs 6.
- Varied hair colors: Pink, blue, brown, purple, and green hair occur among the villagers. Rem has never personally seen black hair before meeting Subaru 6.
- Manifested horns: Ram and Rem each display a single white horn on the forehead. Setanta and the adult reinforcements display pairs of horns; the two-horned form is described as the Oni’s true battle form 5 30 37 43.
- Clothing: Villagers wear both medieval-style everyday clothing and plain kimonos 6.
Abilities & Skills
Horns and Mana Absorption
Oni horns forcibly draw mana from the surrounding atmosphere and convert it into the user’s power 7.
- Horns can be manifested for combat and retracted when necessary 5 44.
- Absorbed mana strengthens the body and fuels powerful magic. Ram uses this mechanism to destroy more than a dozen horned crocodile mabeasts with one wind attack 5 7.
- Individual capacity varies enormously: Ram’s horn absorption and mana capacity exceed what the lesser spirit Antares can drain 44.
- Mana-rich environments are especially suitable for Oni combat and training 7.
Natural Magical Talent
Oni possess substantially greater innate magical talent than ordinary humans and can cast simple magic by feel without incantations 10.
- Young children use magic for practical work, including felling a tree thicker than an adult’s waist 11.
- One child produces a wind blast strong enough to send an adult flying 16.
- Ram specializes in devastating wind attacks, while Rem’s fire-attribute mana controls temperature and produces ice 5 30.
- Exceptional racial talent does not eliminate individual differences: Rem initially struggles with magic that much younger Oni can perform 11.
Physical Enhancement
Atmospheric mana gives Oni strength far beyond what their apparent size suggests 38 43.
- Horn-empowered adult fighters crash into enemy formations with tremendous force 43.
- Even Rem, before awakening her horn, can knock large Witchbeasts away with rudimentary mana attacks 7 24.
- Without horn-based reinforcement, Oni retain sturdy bodies and weapon skills, but lose much of their combat advantage. Hagen describes them as not greatly different from ordinary humans when not using their horns 10 44.
Self-Healing
Oni possess a self-healing ability that becomes fully active during Rem’s awakening 30.
- Rem’s crooked fingers reset, torn skin closes, and exposed flesh is covered by new tissue 30.
- After escaping the contaminated atmosphere, Ram recovers her strength; in clean air, her self-healing restores her body and returns her to peak condition 46 48.
Weaknesses
Contaminated Mana
The Oni’s dependence on atmospheric mana becomes a critical vulnerability during the Witch Cult’s attack 37 38.
- Absorbing polluted mana draws contamination into the body. Once enough accumulates, the victim burns from within 38.
- Continuing to use horns in contaminated air can be fatal within moments, as demonstrated by Setanta and other village defenders 37 44.
- Retracting the horns prevents further horn-based absorption but leaves fighters severely weakened against the Cult’s numbers 44.
- Killing a single contaminator initially clears the pollution, but the Cult defeats this tactic by activating miasma magic stones inside every cultist, creating numerous independent sources 43 44.
Individual Combat Limits
- Awakening does not make every Oni equally powerful. Even with her horn, Rem cannot defeat the adult Shadow Crocodile Zartoa alone; Subaru and Antares attacking it internally are essential to their victory 32 34.
- Ram’s overwhelming strength is explicitly exceptional, not representative of the village as a whole 6.
Society & Settlement
The Oni Village
The village stands in a forest deliberately chosen for its dense atmospheric mana, rather than as a refuge from persecution or disaster. Mabeasts also favor mana-rich environments, making the surrounding forest dangerous for humans but valuable to the Oni 7.
- Protection: A barrier prevents mabeasts from entering the settlement 7.
- Outside contact: Merchants visit despite the village’s secluded location 6.
- Facilities: The village has a library, infirmary, tavern, shops, and a smithy 8 12 17 19.
- Occupations: Residents include farmers, blacksmiths, merchants, and a physician 8 11 12 17.
- Practical limitations: Fire remains inconvenient enough that Subaru’s mana-free lighters attract considerable interest and sell out their first batch 17 19 20.
Twins and the “Oni God Reborn”
Twins are considered taboo. Village custom requires them to be killed immediately after birth, and Ram and Rem survive only because Ram’s extraordinary power secures an exception 22.
The sisters are initially treated as children of ill omen, including by their parents. As Ram’s abilities develop, the villagers come to regard her as their pride and future. Rem’s treatment improves only because she is Ram’s sister, leaving her isolated and habitually compared with Ram 22 24.
- Ram receives the title “Oni God Reborn” and becomes the village’s strongest member 6.
- During the threatened attack, Setanta orders the adults to prioritize Ram’s survival as the hope of the Oni’s future 39.
- Ram’s decision to join Subaru’s offensive helps overcome the villagers’ hesitation, since protecting her requires accompanying her 41.
Notable Members
- Ram — Strongest villager and “Oni God Reborn”; possesses exceptional wind magic and mana capacity 6 44.
- Rem — Ram’s younger twin sister; initially the weakest Oni, later awakens her horn while fighting to recover Subaru 7 30.
- Setanta — Village chief and second-strongest resident; fights with two horns and a great blade 37.
- Baren — Blacksmith known as “Baren the Oni Smith.” Claims to have been the largest weapons supplier during the Demi-Human War decades earlier; creates Subaru’s mana-powered pistol 20.
- Hagen — Farmer who teaches Subaru his first incantation and assesses his spirit-assisted strength against Oni children 11 16.
- Buren, Falin, Michel, and Laxing — Children who participate in Subaru’s practice bouts 16.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Subaru’s Arrival
Ram and Rem bring the stranded Subaru to the village, where Setanta permits him to remain under observation. Rem is assigned to watch him. His early struggles with work and magic establish the enormous gap between an ordinary human and even very young Oni 6 7 11.
Subaru later gains recognition through spirit-assisted magic and his lighter business, becoming influential enough to gather villagers when he warns them about the Witch Cult 15 16 19 41.
Witch Cult Assault
In the first witnessed attack, the Witch Cult burns the village and exploits contaminated mana to kill its defenders. Setanta dies, Ram is forced to stop fighting, and Rem continues fighting despite burning. Subaru’s death triggers Return by Death, resetting events to that morning 37 38 39.
After the reset, Subaru warns Setanta and organizes a preemptive forest offensive with Ram’s support. The Cult responds by turning its members into widespread sources of contamination, again stripping the Oni of their primary advantage 39 41 42 43.
As the defense collapses, Baren and Setanta hold off the attackers while Rem escapes with Subaru and the incapacitated Ram. Ram subsequently begins recovering after reaching uncontaminated air 44 46.
