Background / History

Twins were taboo among the Oni and were normally killed immediately after birth. Ram’s extraordinary power manifested at birth, securing an exception that saved both sisters. Nevertheless, they initially faced hostility from the villagers and emotional coldness from their parents 22.

As Ram demonstrated her abilities, the village began treating her as the pride and future of the Oni. Rem’s improved treatment was largely an extension of Ram’s standing: villagers routinely called her “Lady Ram’s younger sister” rather than using her name, deepening Rem’s sense of inferiority 10 22.

Despite her age, Ram handled demanding farm work and commissions beyond the other villagers’ capabilities. She magically dug two of the village’s three wells and was assigned to clear a massive boulder blocking an exit while dealing with any disturbed Witchbeasts 9 23.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Short pink hair and pink eyes 5 31.
  • Build: A small girl whom Subaru initially judges to look younger than ten 5.
  • Resemblance to Rem: The sisters have nearly identical faces and the same height, distinguished chiefly by their pink and blue coloring 5.
  • Clothing: Initially wears a small white kimono matching Rem’s 5.
  • Horn: Manifests a single white, luminous horn on her forehead when drawing on her Oni power 5.

Personality

Ram is blunt, proud, and habitually insulting. She calls Subaru a brat or simply “human,” mocks Setanta’s age and appearance, and openly complains about work that interrupts her time with Rem. Her disrespect toward the chief is familiar enough that he usually responds with resignation rather than surprise 5 6.

Her affection for Rem overrides that abrasive manner. After rescuing her from the forest, Ram cares more about the danger Rem faced than her newly awakened horn. She is grateful that Subaru helps Rem overcome her inferiority complex, but becomes jealous and alarmed when her sister’s attachment to him turns obsessive. Ram explicitly accepts the possibility of a future romance; her objection is to Rem’s unhealthy fixation, not to her liking Subaru 31 33 36.

Ram also rejects the idea that others should die to preserve her as the Oni’s future. Although protective of her pride, she abandons it entirely when Rem’s life is at stake, even begging the Witch Cultists for mercy in one failed loop 38 41.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Magic

Ram uses visible green winds for mass attacks, defense, and precise interception 5 38 43.

  • Wind blades: Destroys more than ten horned crocodile mabeasts with one attack and repeatedly cuts through groups of Witch Cultists 5 38 43.
  • Wind barriers: Shields companions from flames and smoke; also attempts to block Regulus’s attack 38 47 48.
  • Interception: Splits an incoming fireball in midair to protect Subaru 43.
  • Movement and retrieval: Descends through the air when rescuing Rem and later uses wind to lift her out of a crowd of cultists 31 38.
  • Large-scale storms: Her attack against Regulus gouges deep fissures into the ground, while her uncontrolled grief later produces a hurricane that tears apart Subaru’s house 48 50.
  • Limit: Neither her strongest displayed storm nor her defensive barrier can stop Regulus; he remains unharmed and kills her with one attack 48.

Oni Horn and Mana Absorption

An Oni’s horn forcibly absorbs atmospheric mana and converts it into power. Ram’s exceptional capacity makes her the strongest person in her village 6 7.

  • Enhanced physical strength: Mana empowers her limbs enough to tear apart nearby Witch Cultists in close combat 38.
  • Exceptional absorption capacity: Antares cannot drain her contaminated mana quickly enough; Subaru compares the task to emptying a bathtub through a straw 44.
  • Local mana depletion: During her breakdown after Rem’s death, Ram absorbs all surrounding atmospheric mana, forcing Antares to rely on stored reserves 50.
  • Self-healing: After reaching clean air, she absorbs mana through her horn and recovers from her injuries and incapacitation 46 48.
  • Attribute transfer: Antares absorbs wind-aspected mana from her horn, allowing Subaru to use wind magic. He borrows her attribute, not her horn’s overwhelming power 45.

Twin Bond

Ram can sense Rem’s distress through their connection as twins 31 49.

  • Danger sensing: Comes to Rem’s rescue in the forest and immediately senses her condition when she is fatally harmed after hearing Subaru’s secret 31 49.
  • Contamination-linked harm: When Ram uses her horn amid the Witch Cult’s polluted mana, Rem burns in her place. Rem also burns when using her own horn; neither Ram nor Subaru understands the unequal effect 38 44.
  • Emergency suppression: Ram permits Antares to freeze the mana inside her body to stop Rem’s burning. This saves Rem from further injury but leaves Ram unable to move or fight 44.

Author’s Strength Assessment

These comparisons are author commentary, not advancements achieved by Ram in the depicted chapters 41.

Version Author’s comparison
Child Ram with her horn Placed in the same tier as Theresia, Echidna, and the Sword Demon at his peak 41.
Adult Ram with an intact, fully grown horn Placed alongside fully powered Beast of the End Puck, the Witch of Sloth, the Witch of Pride, and the Demon of Melancholy; above Blue Lightning and the Witch of Gluttony 41.

Relationships

  • Rem — Younger twin sister and Ram’s highest priority. Ram dotes on her, rarely refuses her requests, and is willing to surrender or endanger herself to protect her 31 33 38 44.
  • Subaru — Initially an unwanted stranger whom Ram rescues incidentally while protecting Rem. She later acknowledges his efforts to save her sister and appreciates his help with Rem’s confidence, while remaining suspicious of their growing closeness 20 32 33.
  • Setanta — Village chief and the source of many of her commissions. Ram insults him freely but opposes his plan to sacrifice the village for her survival; he nevertheless makes protecting her a priority during the attack 6 23 41 44.
  • Quark and Diema — Parents of the twins. Their early treatment of the girls is described as cold, with the sisters regarded as burdens because of the taboo against twins 22 24.
  • Antares — Subaru’s lesser spirit. Ram voluntarily allows the spirit to immobilize her mana when doing so is necessary to save Rem 44.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Subaru’s Arrival

  • Ram meets Subaru after completing a commission and announces that she wants Rem’s company for the rest of the day. When horned crocodiles surround them, she manifests her horn and annihilates the colony with wind magic 5.
  • The sisters escort Subaru to their village. Ram leaves his explanation to Setanta, refusing to spend more time on the stranger than necessary 6.

Rem’s Crisis and Rescue

  • Ram’s distant commission keeps her away while Rem’s jealousy and despair lead her into the forest. The giant leader of the crocodiles Ram previously killed subsequently pursues Rem and Subaru 23 24 25.
  • After Rem defeats the giant crocodile, Ram arrives and destroys the Witchbeasts gathering around the exhausted pair. She escorts them home and arranges to wash the blood from Rem 31 32.
  • The following morning, she questions Subaru and allows him to speak with Rem, then watches their embrace from outside the window 32.

Rem’s Attachment to Subaru

  • Ram becomes concerned when Rem asks first to have Subaru live with the sisters, then to move into his new house herself. Although grateful for Rem’s newfound happiness, Ram fears losing her sister to him 33.
  • She takes Rem home and confronts her about a hidden collection of Subaru-related objects, including dolls, portraits, observation records, keepsakes, and a wedding menu. Ram keeps her home for the day to address the fixation 36.

Witch Cult Attack: First Failed Loop

  • During the village massacre, Ram shields Rem and Subaru and overwhelms the attacking cultists. Her horn’s absorption of polluted mana, however, causes Rem to ignite 38.
  • When Rem continues fighting despite burning from within, Ram knocks her unconscious to dismiss her horn. After Subaru is stabbed, Ram begs the cultists to spare Rem and places herself between her sister and an attacker 38.
  • A cultist severs Ram’s horn before a mysterious figure destroys the attackers. Subaru’s subsequent return to that morning undoes these events; Ram retains no memory of them 38 39.

Counterattack and Escape: Second Failed Loop

  • Persuaded through Rem, Ram supports Subaru’s preemptive hunt for the Witch Cult. Her participation resolves the villagers’ hesitation and brings Setanta into the operation 41 42.
  • The counterattack fails when the cultists’ contamination again makes her power dangerous to Rem. Antares freezes Ram’s mana, and Rem carries her away while Setanta and Baren cover their escape 43 44.
  • The group escapes on Subaru’s rescued Ground Dragon, but encounters the White Whale. Rem jumps off to divert it while the weakened Ram pleads for her to stay 45 46.
  • Once clear of the fog, Ram recovers but no longer remembers Rem or having a sister. She prevents Subaru from returning, believing he would waste the lives sacrificed for their escape 46 47.
  • Ram shields Subaru when Regulus appears, then attacks him at full strength. He kills her instantly; Subaru’s later death begins another loop 47 48.

Rem’s Death: Third Loop

  • After Subaru reveals Return by Death to Rem, a mysterious figure fatally attacks her. Ram senses her sister’s condition, arrives at the house, and strangles Subaru while blaming him for the death 49.
  • Rem briefly revives long enough to ask Ram not to hurt him. Torn between that request and her desire to kill Subaru, Ram loses control of her wind magic and devastates the house 49 50.
  • To keep herself from killing him, Ram deliberately throws Subaru far away from her 50.
