Background

Rem and Ram were born into a village where twins were taboo and customarily killed at birth. Ram’s extraordinary power secured an exception, sparing both sisters. Nevertheless, the twins were initially treated as ill omens, including by their own parents 22.

As Ram’s abilities earned her recognition as the “Oni God Reborn,” the villagers became more accommodating toward Rem as well. Rem understood this acceptance as an extension of her sister’s importance rather than recognition of her own worth. Constant comparisons with Ram, combined with her unusually poor magical aptitude, led her to suppress her jealousy and regard herself as an unnecessary shadow 6 22.

Village work was allocated according to ability. While Ram handled important commissions and their parents performed heavy fieldwork, Rem received the family’s lightest assignments 23.

Appearance

  • Hair: Short, soft blue hair lying close to her ears 31 35.
  • Eyes: Blue 8 29.
  • Clothing: A small white kimono, matching Ram’s 5.
  • Resemblance to Ram: Nearly identical face and the same height; their principal visible differences are their blue and pink coloring 5.
  • Awakened feature: A single white Oni horn manifests on her forehead 30.

Personality

Rem initially masks her attentiveness with blunt remarks and denials. She calls Subaru weak and troublesome while supervising his work, watching his magic practice, and bringing him homemade food every evening without missing a day. She repeatedly claims that the meals are leftovers or were not prepared especially for him 7 11.

Her need to be useful is closely tied to her fear of abandonment. Caring for someone weaker than herself gives her relief from being the village’s least capable Oni. When Subaru becomes successful and seemingly self-sufficient, that relief turns into jealousy: she rejects his friendship, then hates herself for hurting someone who has treated her kindly 21 22.

At her lowest point, Rem becomes indifferent to her own survival and imagines that dying would free Ram from the burden of caring for her. Subaru’s insistence that her actions matter, regardless of her motives, helps her accept that she has genuinely supported him 24 26 32.

After their reconciliation, she becomes openly affectionate, directly asks for praise, and expresses confidence in Subaru’s future. Her devotion also becomes intensely self-sacrificing. Ram welcomes her newfound happiness but explicitly warns that her fixation on Subaru has become unhealthy 34 36 46.

Abilities & Skills

Mana Manipulation

Before awakening her horn, Rem can release her internal mana as a rudimentary shock wave 24.

  • Sends a crocodile more than three meters long flying, breaking its scales 3.
  • Splits firewood with magic 9.
  • Repels attacking snakes, rats, and wolves, though repeated attacks gradually exhaust her 24.
  • Her early feats do not indicate high standing among Oni: she states that she cannot match a four-year-old beginning magic practice 11.

Oni Horn and Physical Enhancement

Her awakened horn absorbs mana from the surrounding air and converts it into power, following the core Oni fighting mechanism 7 30.

  • Awakening grants sufficient power to fight the giant crocodile and sever its horn, while Subaru and Antares attack it internally 31 32.
  • By the Witch Cult search, her strength is roughly comparable to Subaru’s with his Lesser Spirit 42.
  • Can continue fighting despite severe injuries, but overexertion after awakening causes her to lose consciousness 30 32.
  • Contaminated atmospheric mana makes horn use dangerous, burning Oni from within. During the village attack, Rem also suffers burning while Ram uses her power 38 44.

Fire-Attribute Temperature Control

Rem’s affinity is identified as fire attribute, which allows temperature manipulation rather than only the creation of flames 30.

  • Creates handheld icicles for stabbing and cutting 30 31.
  • Freezes airborne moisture and nearby vegetation, producing a chilling gale and numerous suspended icicles 30.
  • Forms a giant ice hammer during the Witch Cult attack 38.
  • Her first uncontrolled icicle injures her own hand, showing the limits of her initial control 30.

Self-Healing

Her Oni self-healing fully activates when her horn awakens 30.

  • Resets damaged fingers, closes split skin, and regenerates tissue over exposed flesh 30.
  • Does not prevent exhaustion from excessive fighting 32.
  • Cannot make contaminated mana safe to absorb 38 44.

Scent Detection

Rem can detect unusual scents associated with supernatural beings and mana 4 13 42.

  • Notices an irritating smell on Subaru shortly after rescuing him 4.
  • Senses approaching demon beasts and recognizes when their numbers could overwhelm her 4.
  • Detects Lesser Spirits nearby by smell 13.
  • Recognizes the same unpleasant scent around the Witch Cult as the one she associates with Subaru 42.

Cooking, Housekeeping, and Practical Knowledge

Rem’s everyday skills provide much of Subaru’s initial support in the village 9 11.

  • Prepares steamed white sweet potatoes, balanced meals, and hot soup 9 11.
  • Offers to render animal fat when Subaru needs oil for his project 17.
  • Cleans Subaru’s new house thoroughly and prepares tea 33 34.
  • Improvises a bandage from her kimono to dress his injured leg 28.
  • Explains mana, basic magic, Lesser Spirits, and local dangers to Subaru 7 9 10 13.

Equipment & Items

  • White kimono — Her usual clothing; she tears a strip from its hem to bandage Subaru’s leg 5 28.
  • Lighter — Given to her by Subaru as thanks for helping him 21.
  • Basket — Used to carry herbs and gather white sweet potatoes 22 24.
  • Conjured ice weapons — Creates icicles and an ice hammer rather than relying on a documented permanent weapon 30 31 38.

Relationships

  • Subaru — The human she rescues, supervises, and teaches. Their friendship survives her jealousy and develops into her openly declared love. Subaru agrees that they are childhood friends and promises to give her a proper romantic answer when she becomes an adult; he does not accept an immediate romantic relationship 3 7 10 22 32 34 35.
  • Ram — Her older twin sister and strongest source of protection. Rem’s admiration is complicated by inferiority and suppressed jealousy, while Ram consistently prioritizes her safety. Ram is grateful for Subaru’s positive influence but concerned about Rem’s dependence on him 6 22 31 33 36.
  • Antares / Anta — Subaru’s Lesser Spirit. Rem initially feels overshadowed by its usefulness, but it expresses gratitude for her role in keeping Subaru alive. It later helps save her from contaminated mana and accompanies her when she draws away the White Whale 22 32 44 46.
  • Quark — Her father. He throws away the sweet potatoes she prepared, an incident she outwardly excuses despite her distress 24.
  • Diema — Her mother. She reprimands Quark for discarding Rem’s cooking, though Rem’s childhood recollections describe both parents as emotionally distant 22 24.
  • Setanta — The village chief, who determines whether Subaru may stay. During the Witch Cult attack, he protects the group and orders Rem to escape with Ram 4 6 44.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Subaru’s Arrival and Village Life

  • Rescues Subaru from an oil bog, repels the pursuing crocodile, and guides him toward the Oni village 3 4.
  • Seeks Ram’s help when a pack of demon beasts approaches, then brings Subaru to the chief 4 6.
  • Becomes his assigned observer and helps him understand the world, earn wages, and begin magic practice 7 9 10.
  • Establishes a daily routine of supervising his work and delivering meals over the following month 11.

Estrangement and the Giant Crocodile

  • Feels displaced by Subaru’s lighter business and spirit-assisted magic. After being unable to reach him through a crowd of customers, she discards his dinner and subsequently denies that they are friends 21 22.
  • Enters the forest at night after her father throws away her cooking. Subaru finds her surrounded by Witchbeasts and refuses to abandon her 24.
  • Attempts to sacrifice herself when the giant crocodile corners them, but Subaru persuades her that he wants her to live and return home with him 26.
  • Reconciles with Subaru and promises to return together. Moments later, he breaks the crocodile’s slowing magic on her but is swallowed before freeing himself 29.
  • Awakens her horn while desperately attacking the beast. Her assault from outside, combined with Subaru and Antares’s attacks within, brings it down 30 31 32.
  • Finds Subaru alive inside an ice sphere and shields him from approaching Witchbeasts until Ram arrives 31.

Reconciliation and Future Promises

  • Accepts Subaru’s assurance that she is his savior and first friend, rather than a burden 32.
  • Cleans his newly rented home and asks to accompany him on future adventures 33 34.
  • Confesses that she loves him and wants to remain with him for life. They make a little-finger promise to revisit her confession once she is an adult 34 35.

Witch Cult Attack and Repeated Outcomes

  • Initial attack: Fights to protect Subaru despite contaminated mana burning her body. Ram knocks her unconscious to stop her from killing herself through continued horn use. Subaru’s subsequent death resets events, restoring Rem to the earlier morning 38 39.
  • Preventive search: Defends Subaru’s warning and persuades Ram to support his plan to hunt the Witch Cult. She joins Subaru’s search group and detects the cultists’ scent 39 41 42.
  • Village escape: Survives contamination-induced burning with Antares’s help, then carries the weakened Ram away while leading Subaru out of the village 44.
  • White Whale pursuit: Jumps from the fleeing Ground Dragon to draw the White Whale away, with Antares accompanying her. Afterward, Ram no longer remembers having a sister named Rem; Subaru still remembers her 46 47.
  • Return by Death disclosure: In a later scene, Subaru reveals Return by Death to Rem. A silver-haired, black-robed figure kills her as punishment for hearing the secret. She briefly speaks again to stop Ram from hurting Subaru before dying; Ram subsequently cradles her body 49 50.
