Appearance
- Black hair and black eyes: Ordinary features in his original world, but conspicuous among the Oni. Rem associates black hair with the northern country of Gusteko 6.
- Child’s body: His body becomes approximately ten years old, with slender wrists and hands 7 20 24.
- Delicate features: An elderly bread seller mistakes him for a girl, repeating a misunderstanding he experienced during his original childhood 8.
- Unfamiliar clothing: His original-world clothes attract curious and wary looks when he enters the village 6.
- Distinctive scent: Rem initially finds his smell unpleasant. She later notices that Witch Cultists carry a much fainter version of the same scent 7 42 43.
Personality
Subaru initially measures his predicament against games and light novels, imagining heroes, holy swords, and adventure. Village life quickly replaces those expectations with manual labor, wages, and difficult magic practice. Nevertheless, he continues pursuing both financial independence and the strength to survive 8 9 11.
He is resourceful rather than naturally gifted. After recognizing his poor magical aptitude, he turns to knowledge acquired in modern society, including a paper handgun mechanism learned from an online video. His lighter business similarly converts familiar technology into something valuable to the village 12 18 19.
Subaru places considerable weight on what people actually do for others. When Rem admits that caring for him made her feel less useless, he refuses to dismiss the meals and protection she provided. He repeatedly challenges her belief that she is merely her sister’s inferior counterpart 24 26 32.
His courage does not eliminate his fear of death. He fights while terrified during the village massacre, but repeated losses eventually drive him toward despair and self-destructive violence. After Rem dies following his disclosure of Return by Death, he attacks the Witch Cult without regard for his own survival 38 48 49 50.
Although flustered and secretly pleased by Rem’s confession, he refuses to exploit her feelings while she is young. He treats postponing romance as a matter of principle rather than dismissing her affection as meaningless 34 35.
Abilities & Skills
Return by Death
Death returns Subaru to an earlier point in time while he retains memories of the failed events 3 39.
- Learning through repetition: Uses remembered dangers to alter his route through the forest and later anticipate the Witch Cult’s attack 3 39.
- Asymmetric knowledge: Rem, Ram, and the villagers do not remember the destruction Subaru witnessed before the reset 39.
- Changing circumstances: His early return point is in the forest; during the village crisis, he returns to a morning spent with Rem 3 39 48.
- Disclosure punishment: When he tells Rem about the ability, their surroundings vanish into darkness and a silver-haired, black-robed figure kills her 49.
- No relief from suffering: Death remains painful and frightening, and memories of failed loops contribute to his emotional collapse 3 38 48 50.
Spirit Affinity and Antares
Subaru’s Spirit Affinity draws the red lesser spirit Antares to him despite his extremely poor conventional magical talent 15 17.
- Mana supply: Antares absorbs atmospheric mana and stores it in Subaru’s body, enabling spells Subaru cannot reliably perform alone 15.
- Unusual feeding: Unlike ordinary lesser spirits as described in Subaru’s reading, Antares can also absorb mana directly from a human body 14 15.
- Emotional communication: Subaru senses Antares’s affection, fear, excitement, and warnings through their bond 17 18 26.
- Shared perception: Antares helps him detect nearby hostility and recognize contaminated mana 18 43 45.
- Protection: Antares keeps him alive after the Shadow Crocodile swallows him 31 32.
- Dependence: Subaru openly acknowledges that without Antares, even simple practical magic would remain beyond him 25 32.
Fire and Ice Magic
Through Antares, Subaru learns that the fire attribute governs temperature, allowing both heating and cooling rather than flame alone 15.
| Technique / Application | Use |
|---|---|
| El Goa | Launches a fireball. His first attempt misses its target and ignites nearby weeds 15. |
| El Shuma | Removes heat to extinguish fire; later creates an ice pillar that helps him escape the oil swamp 15 18. |
| Shamac | Produces pointed icicles during practice and an ice path for rapidly crossing a battlefield 16 43. |
| Wind suppression | Uses extreme cold to dissipate an Oni child’s wind attack while mana enhancement keeps him planted in place 16. |
| Medical support | Maintains heat for brewing medicine, heats water for patient care, and makes ice packs for fevers 17. |
Mana Enhancement and Armed Combat
Subaru reinforces his body with mana to compensate for his child-sized physique 18 20.
- Mobility: Enhancement makes his steps lighter and his senses sharper during forest exploration 18.
- Strength: Claims a mana-enhanced grip strength exceeding seventy kilograms while throwing an overloaded piece of magic ore 27.
- Sword fighting: Trains with a heavy shortsword and eventually uses it to parry and counter enemy blades 21 43.
- Firearms: Kills Witchbeasts and cultists with mana projectiles from his magic pistol 24 25 42.
- Limits: His power is insufficient to confront the giant Shadow Crocodile directly, and Regulus leaves him helpless after instantly killing Ram 26 48.
Magical Improvisation
- Magic-ore explosive: Pumps mana into a piece of ore until it becomes unstable, then throws it at the crocodile blocking the cave entrance 27.
- Disrupting hostile magic: Shoots Rem with a mana projectile to scatter the yin magic immobilizing her 29.
- Borrowed wind magic: Channels wind-aspected mana obtained through Antares, including a wind blade fired from his pistol to split an incoming fireball 45.
- Contamination detection: Identifies a cultist poisoning the surrounding mana, though killing him fails to resolve the battle once other cultists activate their own contamination sources 43 44.
Technical and Commercial Skills
- Mechanical modeling: Recreates a functional paper-and-rubber-band handgun model for the village blacksmith to study 12.
- Lighter production: Assembles Zippo-style lighters and identifies swamp oil as a fuel that will not solidify like Rem’s animal fat 18.
- Sales: Demonstrates fire without mana, launches lighters at five silver coins each with free fuel, and introduces reservations when demand overwhelms production 19 21.
- Literacy: Initially cannot read local writing; after lessons from Rem, can work through simpler books with a dictionary 8 14.
- Other skills: Can play guitar, sing, apply makeup, skate, sew clothes, make dolls, and discuss some astronomy. Cooking is a notable weakness 19.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Magic pistol: Made by Baren from refined iron extracted from high-grade magic ore. Classified as a high-grade Meteor, it fires mana projectiles without conventional ammunition, provided the user has mana remaining 20.
- Heavy shortsword: An unnamed, thirty-five-kilogram weapon given to him for close-combat training. He carries it on his back with a leather strap because wearing it at his waist is impractical 20 21.
- Zippo-style lighters: His principal commercial product, fueled with oil collected from the nearby swamp 18 19.
- Shadow Crocodile horn: A bloodstained, broken horn displayed in his new office after he identifies the beast as an adult Shadow Crocodile Zartoa 34.
- Original-world belongings: Arrives in the forest carrying his phone, cup noodles, and snacks 1.
Relationships
- Rem — Rescuer, caretaker, teacher, and first friend. Their friendship survives her jealousy of his growing independence. She later confesses her love; Subaru promises a proper answer when she becomes an adult and accepts “childhood friends” as their present relationship 3 8 22 24 32 35.
- Antares / Anta — Contracted lesser spirit and principal source of combat power. Subaru treats him affectionately, values his companionship, and asks him to remain by his side 17 18 32.
- Ram — Rem’s protective older sister. Initially dismissive of Subaru, she later rescues him and recognizes his importance to Rem, while remaining irritated by her sister’s growing attachment to him 6 31 32 33.
- Setanta — Village chief who permits Subaru’s stay and assigns work suited to his fire magic. Their relationship becomes strained when Subaru’s warnings conflict with Setanta’s willingness to accept casualties to preserve the Oni’s future 7 15 39.
- Baren — Blacksmith who develops Subaru’s paper handgun concept into a magic weapon and sells it to him. Their dealings combine practical support with persistent bargaining over money 12 20.
- Hagen — Oni farmer who teaches Subaru his first effective incantation, observes his later practice bouts, and helps manufacture lighter casings 16 21.
- Black Ground Dragon — A creature Subaru rescues and wishes to keep despite lacking adequate money and housing. It later carries him, Rem, and Ram away from pursuing cultists 13 45.
- Witch Cult — Enemy responsible for the village’s destruction. Some members initially bow to Subaru, and one calls him “Archbishop” even as he kills them; Subaru’s actual membership or rank is not established 37 43 50.
Background / History
Arrival and Life Among the Oni
Subaru is transported into a forest after going out to buy a few things. A horned crocodile kills him, and subsequent deaths reveal Return by Death. Rem eventually pulls him from an oil bog and repels the pursuing beast, giving him his first chance to reach safety 1 3 7.
Rem and Ram take him to their village, where Setanta grants him temporary lodging under observation. Subaru discovers that his body has become a child’s and that he cannot read the local script. He spends the following month doing odd jobs, struggling with magic, and relying on Rem’s daily meals and instruction 6 7 8 11.
Spirit Contract and Lighter Business
After befriending the isolated lesser spirit Antares, Subaru gains practical combat magic and takes on heating work at the infirmary. He also develops lighters fueled by swamp oil. Their success transforms him from a pitied outsider into a popular inventor, eventually earning enough money to rent a proper house 14 15 17 18 19 21 33.
Reconciliation with Rem
Subaru’s success worsens Rem’s fear that she is no longer needed, and she abruptly denies their friendship. He investigates her isolation and follows her into the forest after learning she has gone out alone at night 22 24.
Their attempt to return becomes a struggle against the Shadow Crocodile Zartoa. Subaru is badly injured, frees Rem from the beast’s yin magic, and is swallowed. Antares protects him inside the creature while Rem fights outside; Ram subsequently escorts them home. Subaru uses their survival to show Rem that her care mattered, including the meals that indirectly sustained Antares’s ability to protect him 26 29 31 32.
Afterward, Rem becomes openly affectionate and asks to accompany his future adventures. Subaru accepts her as his chosen companion but postpones answering her romantic confession until she is older 34 35.
The Village Massacre and Failed Counterattack
The Witch Cult attacks the village after contaminating the surrounding mana, turning the Oni’s reliance on their horns into a fatal vulnerability. Subaru witnesses Setanta’s death and the sisters’ defeat before dying himself 37 38.
Returning to that morning, he unsuccessfully urges Setanta to evacuate the village and stop the Oni from using their horns. He then secures Ram’s support through Rem and rallies the villagers into a preemptive forest attack. The plan fails when the cultists spread contamination from magic stones inside their bodies 39 41 43.
Fog, Regulus, and the Disclosure Taboo
Subaru escapes with Rem and the incapacitated Ram on the black Ground Dragon. In the fog, Rem leaves them to face the pursuing danger, with Antares going to protect her. Beyond the contaminated area, Subaru discovers that Ram no longer remembers Rem 45 46 47.
Regulus kills Ram without injury to himself. A clown-faced man subsequently kills Subaru, sending him into another loop. Desperate for an answer, Subaru tells Rem about Return by Death, triggering her death at the hands of a mysterious figure 48 49.
Consumed by grief and hatred, Subaru attacks the cultists outside the village. He kills several with his pistol, stolen blades, fire, and ice, but abandons self-preservation and dies from the wounds inflicted during the fight 50.
