Appearance
- Lesser Spirits appear as small, floating orbs of light. The forest colony includes red, yellow, blue, and white individuals whose light flickers as they drift 13.
- The spirit later named Antares has an especially vivid red glow, compared to a tiny drop of liquid fire 13.
Origin and Life Cycle
- Birth: Lesser Spirits arise from the world's Mana and have no parents in the traditional sense 15.
- Sustenance: They gather together to absorb freely circulating atmospheric Mana, sustaining their existence while gradually accumulating power 13.
- Maturation: They can eventually evolve into “real spirits.” Rem explains that the spirits Subaru encounters would need another hundred years; absorbing more Mana increases their chances of evolving 13.
- Attribute conversion: Atmospheric Mana is unaspected. Lesser Spirits convert the Mana they absorb into their own attributes 45.
Behavior
Lesser Spirits generally dislike strangers and may instinctively attack anyone who approaches carelessly. The colony injured a young Ground Dragon after it wandered too close; Antares later explained that the retaliation was instinctive rather than malicious 13 15.
The colony also excluded Antares after it absorbed unusual, strange-smelling Mana. Whenever it approached, the other spirits flashed or shook violently until it withdrew. Their rejection prevented it from feeding alongside them 13 14 15.
- Emotional awareness: Antares demonstrates joy, guilt, fear, affection, and distress, which Subaru can perceive through their connection 14 15 25.
- Spirit Affinity: Antares is attracted to Subaru because being near him feels pleasant, despite his poor magical talent 15.

Mana Absorption and Supply
Lesser Spirits support spirit arts users by gathering atmospheric Mana and supplying it to their contractors 15.
- Their assistance allows Subaru to cast spells he could not manage through a month of independent practice 15.
- Mana supplied by Antares also supports Subaru's bodily reinforcement and use of a high-grade Meteor pistol 20 43.
- Their reserves are finite: Antares cannot indefinitely sustain Subaru inside the giant crocodile, where no Mana is available to absorb 32.
Emotional and Environmental Sensing
As crystallizations of Mana, Lesser Spirits are sensitive to surrounding fluctuations, including emotions. Stronger spirits perceive emotions more clearly 18.

Notable Individual: Antares
Antares is the isolated red Lesser Spirit Subaru befriends in the forest. Unable to feed comfortably with the colony, it accepts Subaru's Mana after he eats a white Pok fruit to release it into the air. It then secretly follows him home by entering his body 14 15.
After demonstrating fire and ice magic together, Subaru and the spirit formalize their partnership. Subaru names it Antares, also calling it Anta 15 16.
