Background / History
Raising Jiang Nannan and Jiang Yi
Aunt Rou was widowed before the beginning of the story. Her husband’s death and a congenital heart condition left her in poor health, with little appetite. After Jiang Yi’s mother died, she took him in at the age of three and raised him alongside her daughter, Jiang Nannan. She eventually came to regard him as her own child 1 19.
Raising both children alone placed a considerable burden on her. Villagers helped the household, while the military officer She Fei continued providing financial assistance to the bereaved families 1 4 34.
Moving to Spirit Mountain City
Aunt Rou kept the children’s opportunity for Martial Soul awakening private, telling only Village Chief Qiaona because wider knowledge could cause trouble. She entrusted the children to him for their journey to Spirit Mountain City 2.
After both children awakened Soul Power, She Fei arranged academy places and offered a house in the city. Aunt Rou joined them there, tearfully embracing both children in relief. Their new home had three bedrooms, allowing each family member a separate room 3 4.
When Li Lingyu accepted Jiang Yi as his disciple, he visited the household with gifts. Aunt Rou was initially nervous about receiving a Soul Emperor, but his promise to teach Jiang Yi conscientiously earned her trust 11.
Jiang Yi’s Dangerous Breakthroughs
Following Jiang Nannan’s departure for Shrek Academy, Aunt Rou worried that Jiang Yi was exhausting himself through constant cultivation. She urged him to rest, believing his intense efforts were partly caused by missing Nannan 18.
Her fears deepened when Li Lingyu brought Jiang Yi home unconscious after a failed attempt to break through his level-ten bottleneck. She nearly fainted from distress. When Jiang Yi woke three days later, she checked whether he was still in pain and reassured him rather than blaming him 19.
After a later breakthrough again left Jiang Yi unconscious and injured, Aunt Rou openly questioned Li Lingyu about his condition. His sincere apology quickly dispelled her anger, and the two reconciled 24.
Cure of Her Heart Condition
Although her health had not recently deteriorated, Jiang Yi remained concerned about her congenital heart deficiency. He believed She Fei’s financial support had prevented the overwork that aggravated her illness, but had not removed its underlying cause. He initially considered obtaining a Black Tortoise Divine Pill 32.
Instead, Jiang Yi spent more than twenty days extracting Life Essence from Blue Silver Grass. Aunt Rou hesitated to accept something so precious, drinking it only after he assured her that he could produce more. The essence healed her accumulated injuries and congenital heart deficiency 33.
The treatment also restored her complexion and erased her fine wrinkles. After resting, she felt lighter and healthier, while Jiang Nannan immediately noticed how much younger and more beautiful she looked 33.
Azure Village Attack
The family returned to Azure Village on the third day of each New Year, bringing gifts to repay the villagers who had supported them. During one such visit, Jiang Yi detected an Evil Soul Master attacking the village 34.
Jiang Yi instructed Jiang Nannan to escort Aunt Rou back to Spirit Mountain City, alert the garrison, and fetch Li Lingyu. Unable to fight or safely remain near the danger, Aunt Rou tearfully agreed to leave while Jiang Yi went to defend the villagers 35.
Appearance
- Initial appearance: Looked to be in her forties, wore a plain robe, and had a slightly pale complexion with fine wrinkles around her eyes 1.
- After treatment: Her face became rosy, her fine wrinkles disappeared, and she appeared several years younger 33.
- Characteristic expression: Frequently greeted and cared for the children with a gentle smile 1 4 11.
Personality
Aunt Rou is affectionate and attentive to both children. She prepares their favorite foods when they return from the academy and treats Jiang Yi with the same maternal concern she shows Jiang Nannan. Her hopes center on their safety and health rather than their becoming powerful Soul Masters 6 17 19.
Her gentleness does not prevent her from challenging others when the children are hurt. She expresses displeasure toward Li Lingyu after Jiang Yi’s repeated injuries, but accepts his sincere apology without prolonging the disagreement. She is also reluctant to consume valuable medicine for herself, even when it could cure her illness 24 33.
