Background / History

Early Life and Research Injuries

Li Lingyu was an orphan who spent New Year alone before turning eleven. After that age, he had someone to celebrate with, though he later remembered those occasions as belonging to the distant past 32.

He studied at Shrek Academy and pursued a method for reliably awakening the dormant bloodlines within Beast Martial Souls. His own extreme training and experiments with unfinished medicines severely damaged his body. A Titled Douluo healing Soul Master at Shrek concluded that his condition was beyond treatment, and his cultivation could no longer advance 17 29 34.

Another person subsequently became his test subject and suffered injuries almost identical to his own. This renewed his determination to find a treatment, more for that person’s sake than his own. When Jiang Yi later proposed a different approach to bloodline awakening, Li Lingyu privately expressed regret over what had happened to Lin Yu 11 34.

Life at Lingshan Junior Academy

Two years before Jiang Yi asked about him, Lingshan Junior Academy’s director rescued the gravely injured Li Lingyu and brought him back to the academy. He spent five months recuperating and became a teacher after regaining consciousness 10.

Although assigned to teach Martial Soul Theory, he frequently left the academy to conduct research across Douluo Continent. On returning, he worked in the library, compiling documents and recording his findings. Auntie Chen cataloged the research notebook that eventually attracted Jiang Yi’s attention 9 10.

Taking Jiang Yi as a Disciple

Jiang Yi approached Li Lingyu after reading his work on Beast Martial Soul bloodline Second Awakening. He proposed increasing bloodline activity through compatible Soul Rings and Soul Bones before attempting extreme training. Li Lingyu recognized the proposal’s value and immediately offered to take him as a disciple—before even asking his name 10 11.

Li Lingyu arranged private instruction and visited Aunt Rou with gifts to explain the apprenticeship. Rather than replacing Jiang Yi’s existing cultivation routine, he supplemented it with medicinal baths, nourishing meals, spiritual-power medicines, and evening study. He later added sparring partners and personal combat training 11 12 15 16.

Helping Jiang Yi Break Through

When Jiang Yi became trapped below level ten, Li Lingyu helped develop a breakthrough attempt using a medicine that temporarily increased spiritual power. He tested progressively larger doses and used his wind Martial Soul to monitor Jiang Yi’s condition. When the attempt threatened to destroy Jiang Yi’s body, he intervened and placed him in a prepared medicinal bath 17 18 19.

Unable to find a Mystic Water Pill through auction houses, Li Lingyu sought one from the Mysterious Nether Sect. Its representative demanded that he sell himself to the sect; Jiang Yi rejected the condition on his behalf. Li Lingyu instead established cabins outside the Mysterious Water Forest and began researching an alternative pill using water-attribute Soul Beasts 18 20 21.

He continued preparing treatments and guarding Jiang Yi during a later breakthrough attempt. After returning home with his injured disciple, he accepted responsibility and apologized to Aunt Rou 23 24.

Return to Shrek City

After Jiang Yi overcame his bottleneck, Li Lingyu accompanied him to the Star Dou Great Forest. He located an approximately nine-hundred-year-old Ancient Hemlock, broke through its bark, and protected Jiang Yi while he absorbed its Soul Ring. When the fused ring unexpectedly turned purple, Li Lingyu declined to investigate his disciple’s secret 25 26.

In Shrek City, he asked his old friend Wang Yan to arrange Jiang Yi’s exceptional admission and allow him to skip the first year. Elder Xuan later confirmed that Shrek would accept Jiang Yi, but warned Li Lingyu to leave quickly because Lin Huiqun might kill him if she discovered his presence 27 28 29.

Li Lingyu avoided entering Shrek Academy. Jiang Yi suspected that his departure and earlier injuries resulted from retaliation over the failed experiment, but this reconstruction remained Jiang Yi’s inference 30.

Life Essence Treatment and Azure Village

Li Lingyu joined Jiang Yi’s family for New Year’s Eve dinner. On New Year’s Day, Jiang Yi gave him Life Essence extracted from Blue Silver Grass. Unlike previous treatments, it produced visible signs of healing in his longstanding injuries; a complete recovery was not established 33 34.

He later reached Azure Village after Jiang Yi killed an attacking Evil Soul Master. Though critical of the danger Jiang Yi had taken, he valued his disciple’s determination to repay the villagers’ kindness. Before leaving, Jiang Yi asked him to check on the village after their return to Spirit Mountain City 36.

Appearance

Li Lingyu is described as handsome and refined, though the gloom in his eyes detracts from that impression. He commonly maintains a cold or serious expression 11.

  • Gray robe: Worn during his evening research visits to the academy library 10.
  • White robe: Wore a clean white robe and freshly shaved before formally visiting Aunt Rou 11.

Personality

Li Lingyu is intensely absorbed in Martial Soul research. He travels extensively, spends long hours writing and consulting documents, and sometimes mutters to himself while working. Repeated failures do not weaken his determination to find a reliable bloodline-awakening method 9 10.

His reserved manner conceals considerable kindness. Auntie Chen describes him as someone who quietly helps people in trouble. He takes his responsibilities as a teacher seriously, makes preparations for Jiang Yi’s dangerous training, and refuses to test his unfinished awakening theory on anyone else 10 11 19 29.

He is receptive to evidence regardless of its source. Although initially skeptical of a six-year-old’s theoretical knowledge, he listens to Jiang Yi and revises his approach. He also refuses to label Jiang Yi an Evil Soul Master merely because one of his abilities resembles their techniques 10 11 23.

As his research progresses and his relationship with Jiang Yi develops, his formerly gloomy demeanor becomes more playful. He teases his disciple, expresses confidence in his unusual strength, and respects his right to keep personal secrets 16 26.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Martial Soul

Li Lingyu controls cyan wind through an elemental Martial Soul. His six-ring configuration is yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black 18 25.

  • Rapid movement: Turns into wind and travels fast enough to vanish from Jiang Yi’s sight almost immediately 25.
  • Search and detection: Spreads wind through the forest and receives information from it to locate an Ancient Hemlock 25.
  • Travel assistance: Clears mist and surrounds companions with cyan wind to increase their speed 13.
  • Protective monitoring: Wraps Jiang Yi in wind during a breakthrough attempt and uses it to examine his condition afterward 18 19.
  • Combat strength: Breaks through Ancient Hemlock bark and overpowers Jiang Yi’s enhanced Blue Silver Grass while testing it 25 26.

Martial Soul Theory and Bloodline Research

His central research concerns awakening the ancient Soul Beast bloodlines that his theory holds to be dormant within humans 10.

  • Extreme Training Method: Attempts to activate a bloodline’s self-protection mechanism by pushing the body to its limits. The incomplete method requires dangerous pressure and can cause permanent injuries 7 9 34.
  • Revised awakening approach: Incorporates Jiang Yi’s proposal to stimulate bloodline activity with Soul Rings and Soul Bones from a compatible source before extreme training 11.
  • Martial Soul analysis: Attributes Jiang Yi’s Photosynthesis to mutation rather than bloodline awakening because the Blue Silver Grass’s form had not changed 11.
  • Soul Ring guidance: Helps select Jiang Nannan’s First Soul Ring and later studies Soft Bone Rabbit bloodlines to advise her future choices 12 13 32 33.
  • Research limitation: He has not established a perfected, reliably safe awakening method and explicitly refuses to apply the unfinished theory to Jiang Yi 29.

Pharmacology and Medicine

Li Lingyu develops medicines to support training, manage injuries, and address the weaknesses of extreme cultivation methods 12 18.

  • Spiritual-power secret medicine: Developed after nearly a year of research using an established faction’s library. A sufficient dose can temporarily increase spiritual power by nearly double 18.
  • Dosage risks: The medicine places a severe burden on the mind, can cause mental collapse, and leaves spiritual power weakened afterward even when successfully endured 18.
  • Recovery treatments: Prepares medicinal baths and meals to prevent hidden training injuries and stabilize Jiang Yi after a failed breakthrough 12 19.
  • Alternative pill research: Investigates water-attribute Soul Beasts and identifies Mysterious Water Buffalo horn as a likely Mystic Water Pill ingredient, but ultimately pursues a different pill rather than reconstructing the original formula 21.
  • Healing limits: His medicines cannot repair sufficiently severe injuries, including his own longstanding damage before receiving Life Essence 19 32 34.

Teaching and Combat Assessment

  • Individualized instruction: Retains Jiang Yi’s effective self-designed routine while adding recovery resources and theoretical study 12.
  • Practical combat training: Arranges sparring and personally trains Jiang Yi after identifying battle experience as a weakness 15 16.
  • Skill evaluation: Tests Hemlock Power directly and assesses its ordinary strength as comparable to a high-level Soul Grandmaster, rising to Soul Elder level during its vitality burst 26.
