Background / History
Garling rose through the Path of the Strong, a selection system intended to cultivate powerful defenders of the Celestial Dragons. Hoffman accompanied him through that training while still a child and later became captain of his personal guard. By age twenty-seven, Garling had led the Holy Knights for four years 21 31 36.
Garling earned his reputation as the Hero King at God Valley, where Mjosgard credits him with crushing the Rocks Pirates. Garling also lost one of his children there; he does not say that the child died 13 30 37.
In another incident from his youth, Garling deliberately allowed the Dawn Horn Pirates to abduct him out of boredom. The pirates boasted a thousand-strong fleet and supposedly unsinkable warships. After receiving word from Garling, Hoffman found him on a deserted island; the fleet subsequently vanished without a trace 17.
Appearance
- Red hair, explicitly noted during his intervention in Lu Ye’s infancy 12.
- Black battle robe, worn during sword practice and when confronting the Five Elders 35 36.
- Sword at his waist, with a rapier used in his daily training 29 35.
- Oppressive presence, apparent even before he attacks or releases Haki 29.
Personality
Garling is an uncompromising Celestial Dragon supremacist. He regards commoners as inferior and becomes openly murderous when Lu Ye admits killing fellow Celestial Dragons over a slave. He interprets cruelty and ruthlessness as noble virtues rather than moral failings 29 36.
His loyalty to his people does not mean equal concern for every Celestial Dragon. He considers weaker members expendable if their suffering can cultivate a gifted protector. Nevertheless, he rejects indiscriminate killing within the clan and objects when Lu Ye’s bloodline rhetoric threatens to include his surviving son 36 37.
Garling prizes ambition, discipline, and defiance alongside natural talent. Lu Ye’s self-imposed training schedule pleases him, and he believes a truly strong person should eventually grow beyond the control of whoever arranged their development. He repeatedly mistakes Lu Ye’s concern for servants for the indulgence of someone who sees them as harmless inferiors 30 35 36.
He is calculating about both education and political authority. He chooses Sullivan to keep Lu Ye away from slave games during childhood, yet prepares a later training path filled with bloodshed. He also supports institutional reform when it promises greater authority and resources for the Holy Knights 30 38.
Abilities & Skills
Conqueror’s Haki
Garling can release powerful, deliberately controlled waves of Conqueror’s Haki 12.
- Repeatedly knocks the berserk infant Lu Ye unconscious, temporarily stopping his uncontrolled Armament Haki 12.
- Initially limits the effect on surrounding people to a momentary blackout; repeated releases eventually overwhelm Celestial Dragons and CP Agents nearby 12.
- Cannot keep Lu Ye unconscious while the Goddess of the Dark Night repeatedly awakens him 12.
Armament–Conqueror’s Haki Fusion
Hoffman identifies Garling as the only person he personally knows who can fuse Armament Haki with Conqueror’s Haki. He describes this fusion as a technique reserved for the strongest fighters on the seas 34.
Swordsmanship
Garling practices precise, long-range sword attacks with a rapier 35.
- Produces crimson Flying Slashes with ordinary swings 35.
- Sends those slashes through hair-thin openings in more than a hundred moving paper targets two hundred meters away without damaging the paper 35.
- His slashes continue for several hundred meters beyond the targets before dissipating 35.
Physical Combat and Six Powers Techniques
Garling vastly outclasses the young Lu Ye in direct combat, even when Lu Ye is covered in Armament Haki 29.
- Strength: Stops the berserk infant with one hand and later kicks him through several walls 12 29.
- Durability: Takes an Armament-coated punch to the forehead without dodging or blocking and dismisses its force as feeble 29.
- Flying Finger Pistol: Fires a concentrated burst from his finger that pierces Lu Ye’s chest despite his full-body Haki coating 29.
- Geppo: Leaves the North Star Colosseum by stepping through the air 30.
- Conditioning: Performs one-finger push-ups with an enormous block of gold on his back 36.
Authority and Patronage
Garling’s position gives him exceptional power within Mary Geoise 21.
- Holds the privilege of executing Celestial Dragons 21.
- Leads the Holy Knights and controls elite agents such as the Hoffman Squad 21 36.
- Authorizes Lu Ye’s will to be treated as his own, provided Lu Ye does not endanger the Holy Land 21.
- Can grant special permission for reserve membership in the Knights and oversee a candidate’s Path of the Strong 13 30.
- Resists the Five Elders’ interference in matters he considers the Holy Knights’ responsibility 36 37.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Rapier — Used for daily sword training and highly precise Flying Slashes 35.
- Black battle robe — Worn during training and official confrontations 35 36.
- Bat-Bat Fruit, Model: Fruit Bat — A Zoan Devil Fruit given to Sullivan as a reward and a means of surviving Lu Ye’s dangerous training; Garling does not consume it 30.
Relationships
- Lu Ye / Donquixote Longinus — Nephew, chosen candidate, and prospective opponent. Garling considers his talent greater than his own and believes he could secure the Holy Land for at least fifty years. Their agreement requires Lu Ye to surpass him by age twenty or die in a duel 30.
- Liana — Older paternal half-sister and Lu Ye’s mother. She begs him to save her infant son; Garling initially responds by praising the family’s bloodline and its contribution to the Knights 12 33.
- Figarland, his surviving son — A five-year-old, red-haired boy who challenges Lu Ye. Garling acknowledges that he may be less gifted than Lu Ye but warns against calling him “dirty-blooded” 37 42.
- Child lost at God Valley — Garling states that he lost another child during the incident; the child’s identity and fate are not established 37.
- Hoffman — Longtime attendant, former companion on the Path of the Strong, and captain of Garling’s personal guard. Garling entrusts him with Lu Ye’s protection and training 21 30 31.
- Flora and Evan — Members of his personal guard, assigned alongside Hoffman to watch over Lu Ye 12 14 21.
- Sullivan — Butler personally selected for Lu Ye because he would not entertain the child with cruel slave games. Garling rewards him with a Devil Fruit and makes him jointly responsible for implementing Lu Ye’s training 30.
- Five Elders — Political rivals within the World Government. They oppose his handling of the Path of the Strong, while he accuses them of overstepping their jurisdiction 36 37.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lu Ye’s Infancy
- Responds to Lu Ye’s first berserk episode and recognizes that his uncontrolled Armament Haki is consuming his life force. His attempts to suppress it with Conqueror’s Haki fail because Lu Ye keeps awakening 12.
- Initially declares the child beyond saving and urges Liana to have another gifted child for the Knights. Seeing Lu Ye recover through feeding renews his interest, and he offers reserve membership if the infant survives 12 13.
- Assigns his own elite guards to Lu Ye and invites Homing’s family to move into Pangaea Castle, though Lu Ye resists the move 14 15.
North Star Colosseum
- His favoritism indirectly makes Lu Ye a target: Freck engineers a confrontation in hopes of proving himself worthy of Garling’s attention 20.
- His standing instructions allow Hoffman to back Lu Ye’s decree protecting Hector with Garling’s authority 21.
- Orders the agents to observe and record rather than intervene when Lu Ye attacks Augustus and Freck after Jessica’s death 28.
- Confronts and severely injures Lu Ye over the killings. Lu Ye’s attempt to justify himself through claims of pureblood superiority interests Garling but does not, by itself, overturn the stated execution rule 29.
- Spares Lu Ye under their future duel agreement, then directs Hoffman and Sullivan to begin the Path of the Strong 30.
- Later closes the case by declaring Augustus and Freck dead in a sea disaster and returning the colosseum to World Government management 35.
Path of the Strong and Political Reform
- Refuses injured Celestial Dragons’ demands that the Holy Knights punish Lu Ye. He permits them to fight back themselves, provided they do not kill him 35.
- Defends the selection program before the Five Elders, arguing that sacrifices by weaker Celestial Dragons are justified by the creation of powerful protectors 36 37.
- Supports Lu Ye’s proposed clan system, which would have the Knights assess ability and merit, assign roles, and influence shares of Heavenly Tribute. The arrangement would also expand the Knights’ authority and resources 38.
- Agrees to further discussion after Lu Ye argues that ordinary people could become the Celestial Dragons’ allies and that nobles and Marines are not inherently dependable 39.
- Intervenes in Lu Ye’s examination to award full etiquette marks, treating the boy’s insulting behavior as admirable noble arrogance 46.
Notable Quotes

“Just as I did back then, he'll simply keep moving forward until he's too strong for even the person behind the plan to control.” 30
