Background / History
Service in the Underworld
Jinbao’s master awakened him as a demon. He subsequently spent three hundred years as the master’s pet and another five hundred doing odd jobs. Jinbao identifies Lord King Qinguang as the master whose pet he would become again if his commission failed 4.
When the Underworld expanded its workforce, his master arranged an assignment on Mars, anticipating a claim that humans would immigrate there in 2019. Jinbao needed to collect ten souls to secure permanent employment, but waited almost twenty years without anyone arriving. He was then given another opportunity as a travel commissioner 4.
Lu Ye’s Transmigration
Assigned to improve Lu Ye’s travel experience, Jinbao judged his merits sufficient to choose any destination and recommended the comparatively friendly Pokémon world. He configured a wealthy noble background, Ash’s physical template, and enhanced looks according to Lu Ye’s requests 1.
The required rival field caused difficulty. Following Lu Ye’s suggestion that a doctor rival might ensure good health, Jinbao searched for Nurse Joy but ultimately selected “Joy Boy.” After he activated teleportation, the coordinates changed on their own, redirecting both travelers to the Land of Exile—Pirate King, with a World Malice Index of 98% 1.
Jinbao initially tried to explain Mary Geoise’s inhabitants as Pokémon-world residents, even mistaking an enslaved man for a regional Machamp. After witnessing a slave transform through a Devil Fruit and drown, he recognized their destination and confessed the mistake to Lu Ye. He also revealed the Donquixote family’s original future, including the loss of their status and the deaths of Lu Ye’s parents and Rosy 2 3 4.
Authorization and the Hunger Crisis
Jinbao’s argument with the local world’s will prevented him from obtaining authorization for his work. Lu Ye resolved the dispute by sending “Dad, I was wrong!” through Jinbao’s phone. The world’s will accepted the apology, called Jinbao its godson, and connected him to the Pirate King world 4.
Jinbao then administered Lu Ye’s Pokémon-ability rewards. His selection of Strongman on Lu Ye’s behalf was recorded as a violation, and the raffle box was subsequently altered to prevent direct selection. The later Hangry draw caused a hunger-driven rampage that Jinbao had not anticipated 8 10 11.
During the crisis, Jinbao knocked Lu Ye’s potentially fatal punch away from Homing’s head. He later rammed Sullivan to dislodge three milk bottles within the family’s reach, helping Liana begin feeding Lu Ye without openly revealing an invisible creature’s intervention 11 12.
Interfering with the inhabitants risked exposing the Underworld and violated commissioner rules. Jinbao disappeared for a year and a half while writing self-criticism reports, returning with a writing callus on his paw and considerable reluctance to authorize further draws 14.
Continuing Assistance
Jinbao compiled information on the World Government, slavery, the seas, and the original story’s timeline. This helped Lu Ye assess his position and decide to reform the existing government rather than wait for Luffy’s eventual rise 31.
He continued accompanying Lu Ye through political discussions and training, questioning his defense of Imu, challenging his contemptuous language toward commoners, and commenting on the gap between his exceptional strength and limited technical control 40 49.
Appearance
- Size: Approximately as large as a cat; standing upright, he would not reach the adult Lu Ye’s knee 1.
- Fur and build: Golden, glossy fur over a plump body, with soft fur on his paw pads 4 12.
- Animal features: Small paws and a tail; Lu Ye repeatedly describes him as a rat despite his identification as a golden marten 4 10.
- Later distinguishing mark: A writing callus acquired during his prolonged disciplinary reporting 14.
Personality
Jinbao is eager to secure permanent employment and takes pride in providing a personalized service. His confidence often exceeds his practical understanding: he insists that he prepared thoroughly for the Pokémon world, yet initially tries to interpret obvious signs of another setting through that assumption 1 2.
He is emotionally expressive, frequently crying over mistakes, disciplinary risks, and his stalled career. Despite this anxiety, he physically intervenes to protect Homing and help save Lu Ye, accepting consequences that remove him from the assignment for a year and a half 3 4 11 12 14.
His conversations with Lu Ye combine loyalty with persistent mockery. He challenges Lu Ye’s claims of uprightness, questions whether his arrogant Celestial Dragon persona is really an act, and objects to language that treats ordinary people as inferior. He also admits that having lived in the Underworld since gaining sentience has left him inexperienced in human society 23 40.
Abilities & Skills
Transmigration Administration
Jinbao operates the Underworld’s travel system and configures client identities 1.
- Sets background, appearance, physical template, and required rival information 1.
- Accompanies his assigned client into the destination world 1.
- Requires authorization from the destination’s world’s will to connect his commission reports 4.
- Remains subject to Underworld asset controls and rules against exposing its existence 4 12.
Pokémon Ability Distribution
Jinbao carries a raffle box containing Pokémon abilities in bead form. Although intended for Pokémon, the beads grant traits when Lu Ye swallows them; Jinbao cannot reliably predict their human effects 4 10.
| Ability Distributed | Chapter | Effect and Circumstances |
|---|---|---|
| Insomnia | 4 | Removes Lu Ye’s need to sleep. Jinbao advises entering Marshall D. Teach’s name into its mysterious prompt rather than Lu Ye’s own. |
| Strongman | 8 | Doubles strength during combat. Jinbao selects it personally, an intervention later recorded as a violation 10. |
| Hangry | 10 | Produces extreme hunger and a dangerous loss of control; its benefits later include rapid recovery through eating 11 34. |
| Torrent | 14 | Doubles water-attribute skills during combat; obtained through a delayed reward draw. |
- Draw schedule: Birth, the third day, the seventh day, one month, one year, and every five years afterward 4.
- Selection restrictions: Allowing Lu Ye to choose a bead is already against the rules; after Jinbao’s violation, the box opening becomes too small to reach inside 4 10.
- Removal limit: Jinbao states that an ability automatically unbinds upon reincarnation, offering no immediate solution to Hangry’s ongoing effects 34.
Flight and Concealment
Jinbao floats beside Lu Ye and is normally invisible to the world’s inhabitants 2 5.
- Can perch on Lu Ye’s shoulder or move through the air independently 23 40.
- Can physically collide with people despite being unseen, as demonstrated when redirecting Lu Ye and knocking into Sullivan 11 12.
- Is not an accomplished flyer: while fleeing the berserk Lu Ye, he admits that he failed his flying class 12.
- Must avoid conspicuous supernatural actions that could expose the Underworld 12.
World and Story Knowledge
Jinbao supplies information unavailable to Lu Ye, who died without knowing One Piece 3.
- Explains the Donquixote family’s original fate and identifies future threats such as Teach 3 4.
- Compiles political and historical background, including the timeline leading to Luffy’s departure 31.
- Provides cultural context, identifying the Flower Country’s Huaguo background 43.
- Uses recordings of Doffy’s future speeches to tease both Lu Ye and the young Doffy 40 44.
Equipment / Items
- Large touchscreen phone — Longer than Jinbao is tall; used to contact the world’s will, display the client interface, show character images, and play recordings 2 4 8 40.
- Ability raffle box — Produces trait beads and changes its opening after the authorities detect improper selection 4 10.
Relationships
- Lu Ye / Donquixote Longinus — Assigned client and constant companion. Lu Ye promises a favorable evaluation, helps obtain local authorization, and treats Jinbao as someone under his protection, while also routinely insulting and manhandling him. Jinbao reciprocates with practical assistance, lifesaving intervention, and blunt criticism 3 4 10 11 12 40.
- Lord King Qinguang — Master and former owner as a demon pet. His arrangements give Jinbao opportunities for permanent Underworld employment; failure could return Jinbao to pet status 4.
- Pirate King world’s will — Initially an uncooperative authority after their argument over the destination. Accepts Jinbao as a godson following Lu Ye’s apology and authorizes his connection to the world 2 4.
- Saint Homing — Lu Ye’s father. Jinbao asks Lu Ye to moderate his treatment of Homing and later saves him from a hunger-fueled punch 5 11.
