Background / History

Previous Life

Lu Ye was a Chinese police recruit expelled from the academy within two months for severely injuring gangsters who were bullying local residents. Old Huang subsequently obtained police credentials for him and assigned him to infiltrate Green Biao’s gang. His undercover career lasted eighteen years 1.

Starting as a low-ranking member, he seized neighboring territory with two knives and rose to Double-flower Red Pole within two months. He used his criminal position to attack predatory gangs, punish offenders who escaped legal prosecution, and help drive drug dealers out of the district 1.

His martial arts training came from Master Zheng, who insisted on repaying him for avenging a grievance. Lu Ye rejected Bajiquan’s direct approach in favor of Bagua techniques built around exploiting openings and attacking vulnerable areas 44.

In 1997, Green Biao planned to flee abroad with foreign drug dealers. Lu Ye died detonating an M67 grenade alongside Biao and four Siamese dealers, believing that poorly armed police should not have to die confronting their submachine guns 1 3.

Reincarnation and Early Childhood

In the Underworld, intern Jinbao verified Lu Ye’s merits and offered him a destination. Lu Ye requested the Pokémon world and a wealthy, healthy, strong identity, but a teleportation error instead sent him into the One Piece world. He was born to Homing and Liana as the youngest Donquixote son, Longinus 1 2.

Lu Ye initially knew nothing about One Piece. After Jinbao explained the original fate awaiting Homing’s family, he sought to prevent his father from abandoning Celestial Dragon status. Unable to speak as a newborn, he used gestures and deliberately kept Homing awake; he also made his father read novels aloud while pointing at the words, allowing him to learn the local script 3 5 6 8.

The Hangry trait caused his first major crisis. Uncontrolled Armament Haki consumed his reserves, while hunger suppressed his reason and drove him to attack people around him. Garling repeatedly knocked him unconscious, but the Goddess of the Dark Night kept waking him. Jinbao’s intervention brought milk within Liana’s reach, enabling feeding to stabilize him 10 11 12 13.

His constant need for food confined him to the family compound for his first three years. The destruction caused by his earlier frenzy earned him the title Mad King, and neighboring Celestial Dragons vacated their castles out of fear 14.

North Star Colosseum

At the North Star Colosseum, Lu Ye met Jessica, a child gladiator who believed that she and her father Hector could earn freedom through arena victories. Lu Ye recognized the deception surrounding her enslavement and intended to help her 17.

Freck had arranged a wager and rigged match to provoke Lu Ye and impress Garling. Hector entered as Lu Ye’s slave through Doffy’s wager with Rosward, prompting Lu Ye to order the officials to keep him alive. When Hector lost to Polo the Mountain, Lu Ye jumped into the arena with Jessica and threatened Freck 20 23 24 25.

Jessica’s death triggered Timidity and a final mission directing Lu Ye to reshape the seas according to his own justice. He tortured and killed Augustus and Freck, then faced Garling’s retaliation. His attempt to justify the killings through claims of pureblood superiority did not exempt him from the existing execution rules 28 29.

Reforming the Holy Land

Following the colosseum incident, Lu Ye entered the Path of the Strong, a Knights training program that deliberately subjects promising Celestial Dragons to hostile rivals and pressure. He again persuaded Homing not to renounce the family’s status, warning that ordinary people’s hatred of Celestial Dragons would endanger them 31.

After studying the World Government’s structure and learning that Luffy would not set sail for another thirty-two years, Lu Ye rejected waiting for a future liberator. He resolved to reform the government himself by “placing power in a cage” 31.

Before the Five Elders, he attacked the Celestial Dragons’ incompetence and argued that commoners were natural allies against piracy and war. His proposed clan system would restrain individual nobles through collective rules while giving him grounds to punish violators 37 38 39 40.

He subsequently raided Celestial Dragon residences under the protection of Garling’s training authorization. Rather than forming united resistance, many victims joined his group and supplied new targets to settle their own grudges 41 42.

Room of Authority Internship

After his assessment, Lu Ye declared his intention to join both the Holy Knights and the World Government. The Five Elders offered him a future government role, made the Knights’ thirteenth seat conditional on completing the Path of the Strong, and invited him to study affairs of the sea in the Room of Authority after daily training 46.

His routine combined morning wake-up runs, combat practice, government study, and nighttime reading. His enforced curfew and seven o’clock alarms reduced the burden on the Holy Land’s servants and slaves, whose workload and death rate fell sharply 49.

He also converted part of the Room of Authority into a library, kitchen, and training area. The Five Elders rejected his proposed pool and separate meeting room but allowed him to retain the western half as an activity space 49.

Appearance

  • Reincarnated body: Naturally blond, with short, tousled hair and blue eyes. At three and a half, he is already 1.5 meters tall 5 16 17 34.
  • Clothing: Rejects the standard Celestial Dragon spacesuit and hairstyle; wears floral shirts and a golden feather cloak 16 29 34 49.
  • Blackened hands: His hands remain covered in the energy associated with Hangry, resembling sturdy black gloves even after feeding 13 34.
  • Frenzied state: Blackness spreads over his body, his eyes turn blood red, and his pale-gold hair stands on end 11.
  • Previous life: A muscular, intimidating man with dyed yellow hair and a large dragon tattoo extending across his shoulder, back, and chest 1.

Personality

Lu Ye combines a strong protective impulse with the habits of a violent gangster. He fights exploitation and wants ordinary people to live safely, but readily uses intimidation, robbery, torture, and killing. He prioritizes victory over honorable combat, preferring ambushes, numerical advantages, and superior weapons whenever available 1 28 40 43 44.

His political outlook is pragmatic rather than revolutionary. He considers noble privilege a durable source of power and seeks to restrain its abuse from within, not surrender it. He distrusts promises of future liberation and insists that rulers should be judged by whether they actually stand on commoners’ side 3 31 40.

He describes his arrogant Celestial Dragon behavior as an undercover persona. Jinbao counters that the supposed act is barely distinguishable from his normal personality. His insults, shameless bargaining, and irreverence extend even to Garling and the Five Elders 36 40 46 49.

Despite initially rejecting blood ties as sufficient grounds for loyalty, Lu Ye acknowledges his parents’ care and intends to repay it. He shares food with attendants, apologizes to his brothers before facing possible execution, and comes to appreciate an ordinary evening spent grilling meat with them 16 28 31 44.

Abilities & Skills

Pokémon-Derived Traits

Trait Effect Applications and Limits
Insomnia Removes sleep and drowsiness 4. Gives him additional time for study and training. During his infant crisis, the Goddess of the Dark Night repeatedly wakes him after Garling renders him unconscious 12 34.
Strongman Doubles strength during combat 8. Supports feats such as tearing iron rods from railings. Timidity later keeps its bonus permanently active 28 34.
Hangry Grants Dark-type energy, involuntary Armament Haki, and a limited form of Life Return 10 34 44. Eating restores stamina and injuries rapidly. Hunger can override reason, while uncontrolled energy use drains his reserves. His hands cannot simply be switched back to normal 11 12 34.
Torrent Doubles water-attribute skills during combat 14. His demonstrated test increases the force and range of urination; no practical combat use is established 14.
Timidity Makes his combat state permanent and heightens his senses 28. Maintains Strongman continuously and works closely with his developing Observation Haki 34 43 49.
  • Draw schedule: One ability at birth, then draws on the third day, seventh day, one-month milestone, first birthday, and every five years afterward 4.
  • Removal restriction: Jinbao states that Hangry automatically unbinds upon reincarnation; he provides no usable method for removing it during Lu Ye’s current life 34.

Armament Haki

His Armament Haki first manifests involuntarily through Hangry. It can damage iron armor, but its initial uncontrolled expenditure threatens to exhaust his life force 12.

  • Uses his blackened hands to block attacks and reinforce blows 43.
  • Trains against a heavy iron ball under Hoffman’s instruction 34.
  • Has been shown Infusion, outward emission or Ryuo, Internal Destruction, and the principle of fusion with Conqueror’s Haki; these demonstrations are not established as techniques he has mastered 34.
  • Still lacks effective control over his Armament Haki during his internship 49.

Observation Haki

Flora identifies his Observation Haki during his confrontation with Freck. He later develops it by fighting Garling’s son without relying on sight 28 43.

  • Perceives incoming attacks as points of light in his mind 43.
  • Initially detects threats to sensitive areas more clearly than attacks elsewhere 43.
  • Repeated exposure expands his detection until he can anticipate and counter the boy’s high-speed attacks 43.
  • Continues improving through daily training and hand-slapping games with Shalria 49.

Bagua Black Hand

Learned from Master Zheng in his previous life, Bagua Black Hand emphasizes concealed follow-ups and attacks through openings rather than direct exchanges of force 43 44.

  • Targets vulnerable areas such as the eyes, throat, ribs, and groin 44.
  • Chains punches, elbows, returning elbows, and hand strikes into attacks with multiple threats 43.
  • Defeats Garling’s son three times despite the boy possessing stronger Observation Haki 43.

Six Powers

Lu Ye requests Six Powers instruction because his extraordinary physique and trait-granted abilities do not provide equivalent technical skill 44.

  • Soru and Geppo: Studies both, but Hoffman attributes much of his apparent progress to raw physical ability rather than proper application 49.
  • Rankyaku: His best-developed Six Powers technique. Its explosive power initially destroys his clothes during a failed attempt 49.
  • Heaven and Earth Shared Longevity Explosive Kick: His named close-range Rankyaku variation; Hoffman warns that he needs better release control 49.
  • Localized Tekkai: Requests instruction after Flora demonstrates it 49.
  • General limitation: His strength increases faster than his coordination and control, pushing him toward brute-force solutions 49.

Undercover Work and Literacy

  • Spent eighteen years infiltrating Green Biao’s gang while retaining his police identity 1.
  • Uses noble rhetoric and an overbearing public persona to pursue reforms within Celestial Dragon society 29 40.
  • Knows sign language, which helps him communicate before his infant body can speak 5.
  • Learns the local writing system by matching Homing’s spoken reading to written characters; Sullivan assists with unfamiliar words 6 8.
