Background / History

Childhood and Butler Training

Sullivan was born in the Peli Kingdom to commoner parents. Pirates attacked his town in 1465, leaving him orphaned. In 1468, the kingdom failed to meet its Heavenly Tribute obligation and surrendered a group of children under ten—including Sullivan—to the World Government in lieu of payment 30.

He entered the Holy Land’s butler training program and achieved the best results in his class. He subsequently spent ten years working in the nursery, repeatedly refusing promotion to a Celestial Dragon child’s private butler. Garling later identified the reason: Sullivan disapproved of certain Celestial Dragon practices and felt less anxious caring for babies whose minds had not yet been shaped by them 30.

Donquixote Household Service

As the Donquixote Family’s childcare butler, Sullivan looked after children under three. Despite his youth, he had cared for more than a dozen babies, including Doffy and Rosy, before Homing entrusted him with Longinus 2 5.

Longinus’s unusual behavior quickly tested that experience. Sullivan interpreted the newborn’s gestures, took him to his parents, arranged for nurses to remain available, and advised Homing on bedtime routines. During Homing’s prolonged reading sessions, he supplied tea and milk every half hour and changed Longinus’s diapers 5 6.

When Doffy and Rosy fought Longinus in the nursery, Sullivan was barred from entering by their agents. Unable to believe a three-day-old could overpower his older brothers, he assumed Longinus was being bullied and called Liana for help 9.

Appearance

  • Usual attire: A tailcoat, which he wears while attending Longinus 13 16.
  • Devil Fruit feature: A pair of fleshy wings on his back, used for flight 32.

Personality

Sullivan is deferential, cautious, and easily frightened by the lethal authority surrounding the Celestial Dragons. He follows even a newborn noble’s gestures without questioning them and understands that removing Longinus from Homing’s care requires an explicit order. His promotion causes distress rather than pride because it binds him more closely to Hoffman and dangerous duties 5 14.

His fear coexists with a strong objection to cruelty. He privately rehearsed stopping Hoffman from killing innocent people for more than three years, eventually acting on that impulse when Jessica approached Longinus. Garling specifically valued his unwillingness to entertain children with abusive slave games 22 30.

Sullivan is also deeply affected by ordinary kindness. When Longinus shares freshly grilled meat with him after his intimidating audience with Garling, he warmly regards the boy as the kindest Celestial Dragon 31.

Abilities & Skills

Childcare

An experienced nursery steward, Sullivan handles feeding, hygiene, sleep advice, and communication with very young children 5 6.

  • Understands Longinus’s gestures before the child can communicate normally with Homing 5.
  • Helps Longinus read unfamiliar written characters by supplying their readings 8.
  • Identifies a fifteen-minute interval between the infant Longinus’s feedings, essential to preventing another hunger-driven Haki crisis 13.
  • Adapts feeding arrangements when Longinus repeatedly destroys ordinary milk bottles 13.

Household Administration

Sullivan graduated at the top of his butler-training class and later manages attendants and errands for Longinus 14 30 41 42.

  • Receives three swordsman cooks as subordinates upon becoming Longinus’s personal butler 14.
  • Has priority authority over the Hoffman Squad when Longinus has issued no instructions, by Garling’s order 22.
  • Arranges medical assistance, seeks skilled goldsmiths, and registers Celestial Dragons joining Longinus’s gang 27 41 42.

Protective Reflexes

Sullivan instinctively places an arm in Hoffman’s path when Jessica pulls Longinus aside. The speed of his reaction leads Hoffman to suspect Observation Haki 17 22.

  • Sullivan states that he does not know how to use Observation Haki 22.
  • His internal explanation is years of mentally rehearsing how to prevent Hoffman from slaughtering innocents, rather than a confirmed supernatural technique 22.

Bat-Bat Fruit, Model: Fruit Bat

A Zoan-type Devil Fruit awarded by Garling grants Sullivan flight 30 32.

  • Demonstrated by flying with fleshy wings while displaying Longinus’s challenge banners 32.
  • Garling chooses it principally to help Sullivan survive while continuing to meet Longinus’s daily needs 30.

Equipment / Items

  • Pocket watch — Used to measure Longinus’s feeding interval during the infant Haki crisis 13.
  • Baby bottles — Carried at his waist during Longinus’s uncontrolled Haki episode; their accidental fall places milk within Liana’s reach 12.
  • Serving tray and food supplies — Used while accompanying Longinus outside the family residence 16.
  • Challenge banners — Proclaim Garling’s approval of Longinus’s “Path of the Strong” and warn challengers against complaining if beaten to death 32.

Relationships

  • Donquixote Longinus / Lu Ye — His principal charge and later personal master. Sullivan maintains his food supply, conveys his orders, and receives personal kindness from him 2 13 20 31.
  • Saint Homing — Household master who entrusts Longinus to him and consults him about childcare 2 5.
  • Liana — Longinus’s mother; Sullivan summons her during the nursery fight and helps support her during Longinus’s apparent death crisis 9 12.
  • Doffy and Rosy — Former nursery charges. Rosy clings to Sullivan while both fear Longinus has been executed by Garling 2 29.
  • Hoffman — A feared colleague whose threatening manner makes Sullivan believe he is awaiting an excuse to kill him. Nevertheless, Hoffman recognizes Sullivan’s delegated authority and is assigned to work with him on Longinus’s training 14 22 30.
  • Saint Garling — Oversees Sullivan’s appointment, values his reluctance to expose Longinus to cruelty, and rewards him with a Devil Fruit 14 30.
  • Three swordsman cooks — Subordinates gifted by Garling. Their enormous broadswords and reported ability to cut iron horrify Sullivan, who wants only an ordinary butler’s career 14.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Longinus’s Feeding Crisis

During Longinus’s uncontrolled Armament Haki episode, Jinbao strikes Sullivan’s lower back, knocking three bottles from his waist toward Liana, Doffy, and Rosy. Sullivan cannot see his assailant, but the spilled bottles allow Liana to offer Longinus milk 12.

Hoffman then places Sullivan in charge of gathering baby food, with Cipher Pol agents supplying milk from the Holy Land’s ranch. Sullivan initially attempts bottle-feeding, then holds Longinus by the feet as the child drinks directly from an enormous jar. After the Haki returns, Sullivan times the recurrence and identifies the necessary feeding interval 13.

Promotion to Personal Butler

At Longinus’s first birthday banquet, Sullivan is promoted to personal butler and given three swordsman cooks. He nearly cries at the announcement, dreading continued work alongside Hoffman and his increasingly formidable attendants 14.

North Star Colosseum

Sullivan accompanies Longinus’s first outing with his brothers, keeping food available throughout the visit. When Jessica pulls Longinus into an antechamber, he prevents Hoffman from immediately intervening and later gently announces that it is mealtime 15 16 17.

At Longinus’s command, Sullivan publicly announces that Hector is to be spared. Hoffman supports the declaration by invoking Garling’s authority. Afterward, Hoffman reveals that Sullivan’s orders take priority whenever Longinus has given none 20 21 22.

Following the match, Sullivan is tasked with arranging Hector’s treatment and investigating whether his slave brand can be concealed. Augustus’s agents instead force Sullivan and the Donquixote medical personnel to kneel at gunpoint while Hector, Jessica, and the Mountain are shot and beaten 27.

Sullivan later weeps alongside Rosy while Garling confronts Longinus, believing the boy may have been executed. Their fears end when Longinus emerges alive, demanding his food box 29 30.

Path of the Strong

Garling summons Sullivan and Hoffman, explains why Sullivan was chosen, awards him the Fruit Bat Zoan, and orders both men to guide Longinus’s training. Although Garling predicts that Longinus will not ask about the meeting, Longinus immediately does so; Sullivan recounts the arrangements 30 31.

Sullivan subsequently flies above Longinus’s procession with challenge banners. He continues handling practical duties: escorting Homing, finding goldsmiths, registering recruits, and bringing a doctor and nurse after Longinus’s fight with Garling’s son. He also accompanies Longinus to the Celestial Dragon protest at Pangaea Castle 32 40 41 42 44 50.
