Background / History
Duel Academy Elite and Early Defeats
Chazz initially belongs to Obelisk Blue and enjoys the attention of two followers who proclaim him the academy’s strongest first-year. Proud of both his standing and the Princeton name, he dismisses Jiang He’s victory over Crowler as luck and accepts his challenge 5.
Their wager begins as a rare-card contest, but Jiang He changes his desired stake to money. Chazz’s prized card is worth approximately twenty million, having been acquired through his brothers and the Princeton Group. Jiang He defeats him with Exodia in a single turn and collects twenty million afterward 6 9.
Chazz subsequently loses to Jaden despite receiving rare cards from Crowler. After watching Jiang He defeat Bastion Misawa, he voluntarily withdraws from Duel Academy 25 31 56.
Return from North Academy
Chazz returns as North Academy’s first-year representative, now dressed in black and styling himself “Black Revenge Lightning.” Accompanied by students who chant his chosen name, he challenges Jiang He with the intention of avenging his earlier defeats 56 57.
His Armed Dragon strategy is considerably stronger, but Jiang He destroys his field with Ojama Delta Hurricane!! and later fills his monster zones with Ojama Tokens. Chazz’s support-heavy deck lacks a way to remove his own monsters, leaving him unable to execute his intended comeback 59 60 61.
After another defeat, Chazz awkwardly thanks Jiang He for unintentionally improving relations between the Princeton brothers, while still insisting that he will win their next encounter 63.
Shadow Riders
As his relationship with Jiang He improves, Chazz joins discussions about the Shadow Riders and repeatedly visits Jiang He’s cabin for meals. He openly treats the food as a way to recover some of the money he previously lost 81 82 90.
Chazz faces Professor Banner in a Shadow Duel, using Armed Dragon LV5 and discarding V-Tiger Jet to activate its destruction effect. Banner ultimately defeats him, leaving him unconscious. Even while collapsing, Chazz attempts to correct the name Banner uses for him 111 112 113.
He later recalls having also been turned into a doll by a vampire during a Shadow Duel, treating his accumulated misfortunes as proof that further dark duels cannot easily intimidate him 276.
Society of Light
After losing to Sartorius, Chazz is brainwashed into joining the Society of Light. He changes from black to white clothing, adopts the title “White Lightning,” and defeats numerous Obelisk Blue students, bringing them under the same influence 159 161 166 206.
His improved deck allows him to force a draw against Zane by destroying his own Armed Dragon with Ring of Destruction. Against Jiang He, he also demonstrates countermeasures against back-row destruction and uses Sartorius-associated monsters 161 162 164.
Chazz regains himself during the duel with Jiang He and immediately surrenders rather than continue. His ability to perceive Duel Monster spirits gives him considerable resistance to the Light of Destruction, allowing him to recover without a Shadow Duel 166.
The students he converted do not recover with him. After discovering that ordinary duels cannot permanently free them, Chazz seeks Jiang He’s help. Jiang He identifies two solutions: remove Sartorius’s lingering power or restore the students individually through Shadow Duels 166.
Professional Career and the Fortune Cup
Chazz asks Crowler to recommend him to the professional dueling world. He also temporarily works as Zane’s manager to build his reputation and credentials, though the prospect of dealing with The D’s organization displeases him because of its poor relationship with the Princeton Group 296 303.
His official professional debut is a victory over B▶C. The celebration is cut short when B▶C attempts to assassinate Goodwin before the announcer can finish announcing Chazz’s name 441.
During the Fortune Cup, Chazz gains Dark End Dragon as a Synchro ace. He later faces Jaden, preparing restrictive cards such as The Dark Door, but loses when Jaden’s Divine Elemental HERO Neos reaches 6,400 ATK and destroys Dark End Dragon 378 379 383.
WRGP and Heartland
Chazz joins Team GX for the WRGP, but repeatedly misses his chance to compete because Jiang He defeats entire opposing teams before his turn arrives. After this happens against both Team Catastrophe and Team Legendary Duelists, he insists on going first in the next match 550 561 591 612.
He faces Jack Atlas in a Turbo Duel and temporarily takes control of Red Dragon Archfiend. Their exchange establishes that their previous academy duels often ended in draws 612 613.
The disappearance of New Domino City disrupts Chazz’s developing professional career. His family’s company had already been displaced, and he had not yet earned enough to purchase a D-Wheel. Heartland’s arrival leaves him anticipating another professional restart 649.
After receiving new Armed Dragon cards from the WRGP rewards, Chazz enters the WDC. He unveils Armed Dragon Thunder against Anna Kaboom and later faces Vetrix, countering the destruction of Dark End Dragon with Hell Blast and Call of the Haunted. Neither duel’s final result is established in the supplied passages 703 718 776 779.
Appearance
- Hair: Black, long, sharply spiked hair, repeatedly compared to a hedgehog’s 5 31 82.
- Initial clothing: A blue coat identifying him as an Obelisk Blue student 5.
- Later clothing: Black clothing following his North Academy return; temporarily switches to white under Sartorius’s influence, then changes back after recovering 56 159 166.
- Turbo Duel gear: A conspicuous little yellow duck helmet worn while riding his D-Board 612 613.
Personality
Chazz begins as an arrogant elitist who relishes flattery and looks down on Slifer Red students. Jiang He’s indifference offends him as much as the challenge to his status, and his first defeat leaves him furious and unable to accept the humiliation 5 9.
His theatrical self-presentation becomes a persistent comic trait. He insists on being addressed as “Chazz Princeton Thunder,” corrects opponents in the middle of dangerous duels, and sometimes becomes so absorbed in his own speeches that he fails to notice everyone has left 57 103 112 113.
Despite his boasting, Chazz recognizes genuine strength. He acknowledges Jaden as a troublesome rival and eventually becomes deeply reluctant to duel Jiang He again. He also develops cooperative ties with his former opponents, helping investigate threats and volunteering for dangerous confrontations 248 261 277 379 441.
His pride extends beyond winning: he resents being ignored, denied a public introduction, or kept off the field. Even after becoming an established companion, he protests when newcomers admire Jiang He and Yuma without acknowledging his own achievements 441 526 561 809.
Abilities & Skills
Duel Spirit Perception
Chazz can see and communicate with Duel Monster spirits, including his Ojama Yellow companion 60 166.
- Ojama Yellow warns him about the threat posed by Jiang He assembling the Ojama Trio 60.
- His spirit perception provides substantial resistance to Sartorius’s Light of Destruction 166.
- That resistance does not prevent his initial brainwashing; he still requires recovery during his duel with Jiang He 161 166.
Armed Dragon Strategy
Armed Dragon monsters form a central part of Chazz’s deck, progressing through increasingly powerful forms 59 111.
- Rapid leveling: Advances from Armed Dragon LV3 to LV7 in one turn 59.
- Hand-based removal: Uses Armed Dragon LV5 by discarding a monster to destroy an opposing monster whose ATK does not exceed the discarded monster’s ATK 112.
- Thunder variant: Uses Armed Dragon Blitz to summon Armed Dragon Thunder LV3, then upgrades it to LV5 by sending LV3 and another copy from his hand to the Graveyard 718.
- Early limitation: His heavily specialized support cards leave him unable to clear Ojama Tokens from his own field 61.
Dark End Dragon and Revival Combos
Dark End Dragon becomes Chazz’s Synchro ace during his professional career 378.
- Reduces its own ATK and DEF by 500 to send an opposing monster to the Graveyard 380.
- Uses revival cards extensively, including three copies of Call of the Haunted in his duel with B▶C 361.
- Combines Hell Blast with Call of the Haunted against Vetrix, destroying the opposing Number monster and reviving Dark End Dragon with its previously reduced stats restored 779.
Defensive and Control Tactics
Chazz increasingly incorporates disruption, damage prevention, and opponent-specific preparations 162 379 718.
- Ring of Destruction: Forces a draw against Zane by destroying his own Armed Dragon and damaging both duelists 161.
- The Dark Door: Limits each side to one attacking monster per Battle Phase, guarding against Jaden’s multi-attack combinations 379.
- Power Wall: Sends six cards from his Deck to the Graveyard to prevent 3,000 battle damage against Anna Kaboom; VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon is still destroyed 718.
- Monster theft: Uses Speed Spell - Synchro Removal to temporarily seize Jack’s Red Dragon Archfiend 613.
Investigation and Team Support
- Helps Tyranno Hassleberry locate a small military research base by following an increasingly strong signal while searching for Professor Cobra 248.
- Guards the supply storeroom alongside Hassleberry during the Yubel crisis 261.
- Carries a Shadow Item intended for Zane and Atticus during efforts following the Society of Light incident 169.

- Jaden Yuki — Longstanding dueling rival and companion. Jaden defeats him early at Duel Academy and again in the Fortune Cup 31 277 378 383.

- Ojama Yellow — Duel Spirit companion who warns him about opposing Ojama combinations, despite Chazz’s irritation with him 60.
- Sartorius — Defeats and brainwashes Chazz, turning him into a Society of Light recruiter. Chazz denounces him after recovering 161 166 206.
- Two older brothers — Provide rare cards and financial backing. Jiang He’s involvement helps ease tensions between the brothers 6 58 63 161.
- B▶C — Opponent in Chazz’s winning professional debut. After becoming a Dark Signer, B▶C refuses Chazz’s rematch challenge and chooses Jiang He instead 441.
