Background / History
Transmigration and Duel Academy enrollment
Jiang He arrives in the dueling world through transmigration and activates the Strongest Duel Depression System while taking advantage of an opportunity to help two prospective Duel Academy students. Its beginner rewards give him an Exodia Deck and Clear Mind, allowing him to guarantee the final piece after opening with four Exodia cards against Professor Crowler 1 3.
His entrance-exam victory earns him admission and a reputation for apparently impossible draws. Zane Truesdale senses that his victory involves more than luck. After enrolling in Slifer Red, Jiang He deliberately seeks opponents to test his system and earn Emotion Points, including provoking Chazz Princeton into a duel 3 5.
Shadow Riders and the Sacred Beasts
Jiang He becomes involved in the academy’s Shadow Duel conflicts while assembling the Crimson Dragon’s marks. He partners with Alexis Rhodes against Chancellor Sheppard’s legendary duelists and later records a combined 1,700-point reward from the Paradox Brothers 42 48.
Kagemaru targets Jiang He’s ability to command Duel Monsters spirits, intending to take it for himself and use it to control the Sacred Beasts. Jiang He defeats him, obtains the three Sacred Beast cards, and receives the dark artifact ring containing the defeated chairman. The duel awards 6,500 Emotion Points, raising his balance to 11,000 115 121.
He also helps Professor Banner obtain materials for a replacement body. Banner uses alchemy in the Gravekeeper Clan’s otherworld to restore himself and resume supervising Slifer Red, although Jiang He attaches an IOU or servitude contract to his assistance 130.
Sartorius and the World Duel Tournament
Jiang He defeats Aster Phoenix and repeatedly disrupts Sartorius’s influence over Duel Academy. After defeating a controlled Chazz, he identifies Chazz’s missing memories as the result of Sartorius’s brainwashing 154 166.
Against Sartorius, he combines Reversal of Fate, Arcana Force XXI - The World, and two recurring Samsara Lotus monsters to skip his opponent’s turns. His Demonic Ape Mark prevents Sartorius’s Light of Destruction from reclaiming control of The World 223.
His victory leaves him holding both Satellite SOLA Keys. Prince Ojin seeks to recover one, but Jiang He rejects marriage into the royal family and dismisses an honorary title alone as inadequate payment. He is subsequently recognized as both the World Duel Tournament winner and an honorary prince of the Serpent God Kingdom 224 225 229 353.
Academy supremacy and New Domino City
Jiang He defeats Zane Truesdale with a Chimeratech Overdragon built from thirty Fusion Materials. Limiter Removal raises its ATK from 24,000 to 48,000, and its attacks reduce Zane’s Life Points to zero. Chancellor Sheppard declares Jiang He Duel Academy’s new top student 303.
He then investigates cards that can no longer summon monsters, recognizing the dense dark power covering them. During the Darkness conflict, his lockdown forces Mr. T to surrender a Shadow Duel and disappear 303 307.
In New Domino City, he confronts Sayer, assists Akiza, and opposes the Dark Signers’ plans. Jack Atlas eventually surrenders rather than endure Jiang He’s strategy, causing the dark aura influencing him to disperse 345 371 460.
Jiang He later captains a tournament team that includes Jaden, Chazz, and Zane. Declan Akaba credits his team with defeating every opponent they faced at the WGP World Duel Tournament, including Jack Atlas and Yusei Fudo 1050.
Number cards and the Barians
When he meets Yuma Tsukumo and Astral, Jiang He already possesses a sealed No. 25: Force Focus. He pretends that sealing it exhausted him, prompting the pair to promise repayment in rare cards 665.
By the later Number-card conflict, Jiang He has taken control of Heartland City and appointed Lazar its chief administrator. He identifies Astral’s escaped sentient Number card as the likely Number 96: Dark Mist, then joins the expedition pursuing it through a dimensional passage 900.
Before Don Thousand’s revival, he purchases an Ursarctic Deck specifically to counter the Barian god’s Xyz strategies. They agree to a Shadow Duel staking their souls, cards, and possessions; the supplied account does not establish the duel’s final outcome 954 964.
Leo Akaba’s intervention
Yuri follows Jiang He and attempts to confront him, only to learn that numerous members of Jiang He’s group have already detected him. Jiang He faces Yuri with Counter Fairies, using Guiding Ariadne to activate Solemn Judgment without paying Life Points 988 992.
Yugo later challenges him under Leo Akaba’s orders because Rin is being held hostage. During the subsequent crisis, Jiang He supplies spare Duel Disks so Jaden’s group can subdue controlled students and remove their devices, while he remains to confront Leo himself 1032 1095.
Appearance
- Concealable wrist marks: Individual divine marks can appear on his wrist and then vanish; he is pleased that the Dragon Head Mark does not remain like a tattoo 32 103 309.
- Complete Crimson Dragon mark: Once united, the mark moves to his back and takes an ouroboros-like form 147.
- Flashy gold Duel Disk: Used in later confrontations, including his duels against Dark Mist and Declan Akaba 901 1050.
Personality
Jiang He deliberately provokes opponents because frustration directly supports his system’s rewards. He presents oppressive duels as acts of kindness, calling himself a “spiritual healer” who brings “healing” and “warmth.” His friends recognize the contradiction, while he treats their discomfort as part of the joke 5 154 172.
He is financially calculating: he encourages wagers, accepts IOUs, bargains over valuable cards and keys, and exaggerates the effort behind his assistance when rare-card compensation is available. He also prefers keeping his strength unobtrusive so that prospective opponents will underestimate him 126 130 146 665 721.
Outside duels, he favors rooftop sunbathing, deluxe meals, hot-spring baths, and massages. His leisurely habits coexist with practical support for his allies, including helping Banner restore his body, fulfilling Alexis’s request to duel her brother, and equipping students resisting Leo Akaba’s control devices 49 101 130 250 1095.
Abilities & Skills
Strongest Duel Depression System
The system converts an opponent’s emotional distress into resources for new decks and supernatural powers 1.
- Its stated reward condition involves upsetting an opponent, making them lose composure, and winning; point notifications also appear during duels 1 221.
- The shop normally refreshes once every two days with four exchange options 3 295.
- His recorded balance grows from 800 points after the entrance examination to 230,000 by the later academy conflicts 3 1105.
Clear Mind and Draw Manipulation
Clear Mind guarantees a desired card once per duel. Top-Tier Clear Mind extends this to cards he owns but has not included in his current deck 3 48 102.
- Makes draw-dependent effects such as One Shot, One Kill! Iaido Draw reliable 102.
- Can be used with a card-drawing effect rather than only the normal draw for the turn, as demonstrated with Speed Spell - Angel Baton 617.
- Produces a perceptible aura that experienced duelists notice 3 499.
- Separately, Duel Spirit Sight lets him call toward cards internally and obtain a somewhat favorable draw order; this is less absolute than Clear Mind 14.
Spirit Perception and Materialization
Jiang He can see and communicate with Duel Monsters spirits, while the Crimson Dragon’s power lets him bring card effects into the physical world 3 135 260.
- Materialization is not limited to monsters: he can make Spell and Trap effects physically effective outside a Shadow Duel 260.
- Cards without awakened spirits can still manifest, but lack independent spirit personalities and only follow his orders 260.
- Awakening powerful spirits remains a bottleneck even after he gains sufficient materialization power 168.
- Materializing spirits through the complete Crimson Dragon mark requires sufficient Emotion Points 168.
Divine Protection, Control, and Judgment
His accumulated marks provide distinct protections and supernatural tools rather than a single general-purpose ability 250 516 782.
- Control: The Demonic Ape Mark overrides interference with spirits on his field, demonstrated against Sartorius’s Light of Destruction 223.
- Protection: His abilities include Shadow Duel damage protection, toxin immunity transferable to others, and Thor’s protection outside Shadow Duels 22 250 439.
- Judgment: Odin’s Mark supplies direct divine lightning, while the Lizard Mark can reveal and hasten a target’s death 295 516.
- Mental intervention: The Millennium Key Mark can expose an evil presence within a heart and remove mind control 782.
- Limit: Completing Quetzalcoatl’s power does not itself grant the ability to release Camula’s people from the underworld 146.
Dueling and Counter-Deck Construction
Jiang He selects decks around an opponent’s weaknesses, frequently using lockdowns, resource denial, effect loops, and reversals of prepared counters 227 307 954.
| Strategy | Demonstrated application |
|---|---|
| Graveyard suppression | Replaces Jaden’s Skyscraper with Necrovalley while fielding two Masked HERO Dark Law monsters 52. |
| Repeated turn skipping | Uses The World, Reversal of Fate, and recurring Samsara Lotus tributes against Sartorius 223. |
| Layered Continuous Traps | Combines Tyrant’s Tirade, Skill Drain, and Rules of the Court to restrict Jack’s monsters while shielding his own setup 458. |
| Punishing negation | Responds to Sherry negating The Golden Apples with Witch’s Strike, destroying her entire field and hand 524. |
| Removing monsters through Fusion | Uses Parasite Paranoid and Super Polymerization to turn Jean’s two monsters into Mudragon of the Swamp 540. |
| Turning stolen monsters into liabilities | Protects Zoodiac Boarbow, leaving Fortuno to take Necro Synchron and inherit its Zombie-only Special Summon restriction 762. |
| Team pressure | Revives Gameciel while working with Akiza to concentrate their attack on Nistro before Alito 855. |
| Cost-free Counter Traps | Uses Guiding Ariadne to waive Solemn Judgment’s Life Point cost against Yuri 992. |
Knowledge of the Original Timeline
