Background / History

Previous Life and Holy Soul Village

Tang San was an orphan and a member of the Tang Sect in his previous life. His familiarity with killing intent predates his life on the Douluo Continent 7 31.

Raised by Tang Hao in Holy Soul Village, he gathers wild vegetables and firewood to help sustain their impoverished household. His early contact with Wang Xingyu consists of brief encounters while foraging. He warns Wang Xingyu about poisonous leaves and points him toward edible wild onion bulbs 1 2.

Their acquaintance develops into friendship over the following year. Tang San helps tend the fire for Wang Xingyu’s soap production, reads at Spirit Hall with him, and becomes his morning running partner. After hearing Wang Xingyu’s theory that physical conditioning might influence Innate Soul Power, he adds two hours to his cultivation routine 4.

Awakening and Family Revelations

Although he awakens with Innate Full Soul Power, Tang San is troubled by Blue Silver Grass’s reputation as a trash Martial Soul. Wang Xingyu points out its unusual golden sheen and recommends a control-focused path supplemented by attack, especially in combination with his second Martial Soul 4 5.

Wang Xingyu then tells him about his parents: Tang Hao belonged to the Clear Sky Sect, and his mother sacrificed herself during an attack led by Spirit Hall’s previous Pope. Tang San accepts the need for revenge but agrees to target those responsible rather than everyone associated with Spirit Hall 6.

When Tang San confronts his father, Tang Hao initially directs killing intent toward Wang Xingyu. Tang San defends his friend’s intentions and explains his concern for ordinary people who depend on Spirit Hall. Tang Hao’s hostility subsides, and he begins teaching Tang San smithing as the first lesson in using the Clear Sky Hammer 7.

Nuoding Academy and the Tang Sect

Tang San receives Holy Soul Village’s work-study place after Wang Xingyu declines it and pays his own tuition. At Nuoding Academy, he joins Dorm Seven, defeats Wang Sheng, and then loses the dormitory leadership challenge to Xiao Wu 9 11.

With Wang Xingyu’s advice and a mercenary team’s assistance, he obtains an Iron Thorn Vine as his First Soul Ring. He later uses his strengthened Blue Silver Grass against Xiao Chenyu’s group, supported by Wang Xingyu’s underground Soul Power transfers 13 14 16.

During their third-year vacation, Tang San discovers that Tang Hao has left home. Xiao Wu offers to become his family, and the three friends become sworn siblings, with Tang San as the eldest. They subsequently settle on Tang Sect as the name of their organization 20 21.

Their cultivation experiments produce the Triangle Cycle, a continuous circuit connecting all three through Wang Xingyu’s Blue Silver Grass. This method later helps Tang San withstand a Thousand-Year Second Soul Ring 22 24.

Shrek Academy

Tang San travels to Shrek with Xiao Wu and Wang Xingyu. During the entrance examination, he organizes the applicants’ tactics against Zhao Wuji and combines his control abilities with Wang Xingyu’s support. The group passes 26 28 29.

Soon afterward, Wang Xingyu brings him to witness Tang Hao confronting Zhao Wuji. Reunited with his father, Tang San cries openly. Tang Hao reassures him that he has remained nearby and tells him to continue cultivating 31.

At the Soul Fighting Arena, Tang San defeats Zhu Zhuqing with a single move while avoiding serious injury. Later training exposes weaknesses in his anticipation: Xiao Wu defeats him with a Moonfall–Teleportation combination, and Yu Xiaogang criticizes his carelessness despite praising his fighting instincts 33 47 48.

Star Dou Forest

After the Titan Giant Ape takes Xiao Wu and Wang Xingyu follows her, Tang San immediately pursues them. During the search, he encounters a Man Faced Demon Spider and absorbs its Soul Ring, also acquiring an external Soul Bone 38 39 40.

Meng Yiran and her grandparents subsequently claim the spider. Tang San wins the ensuing throwing-knife contest, but remains focused on finding his companions rather than accepting the proposed kiss wager. Once Xiao Wu returns, he checks her for injuries and expresses relief that she is safe 40 41.

Appearance

  • Blue hair, already distinctive when he is approximately five years old 1.
  • Bright eyes and a usually restrained expression 1.
  • Faded, coarse clothing during his early life in Holy Soul Village 1.
  • External Soul Bone manifestation: eight dark-purple, barbed spider legs extend from his back, each over a meter and a half long, with eerie blue tips. They can retract into his body 40.

Personality

Tang San is reserved, disciplined, and unusually composed for his apparent age. He maintains a strict cultivation routine and remains attentive in theory classes even when his friends lose interest. His practical kindness appears before his friendship with Wang Xingyu: he warns him about poisonous plants without expecting anything in return 1 4 12 20.

He values reciprocity. After benefiting from Wang Xingyu’s discoveries and support, he teaches him the Mysterious Heaven Skill because both need to grow stronger. He also respects his companions’ privacy, choosing not to question Xiao Wu’s unusual Second Soul Ring acquisition because everyone—including himself—has secrets 8 25.

His loyalty can override his usual caution. He pursues the Titan Giant Ape immediately when Xiao Wu is taken, and his father’s prolonged absence affects him deeply. Among his sworn siblings, however, he becomes more openly playful and joins in their teasing 20 31 38.

Wang Xingyu’s advice influences his moral outlook. Tang San distinguishes personal revenge from indiscriminate hostility toward Spirit Hall and later challenges the idea that strength justifies provoking weaker people 6 7 36.

Abilities & Skills

Blue Silver Grass

Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass carries the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline, rather than being an ordinary specimen 8.

  • Initially appears sturdy and faintly golden, with greater toughness and capacity than Wang Xingyu’s grass 5 8.
  • Can take root in soil and connect with nearby wild Blue Silver Grass; Tang San senses their recognition of him 8 9.
  • Supports a fighting style centered on entanglement, restraint, and crushing force 12 14.
  • Can serve as a movement aid: he catches an overhead beam and swings away during his spar with Xiao Wu 15.

Iron Thorn Strangulation

His First Soul Skill comes from an approximately three-hundred-year Iron Thorn Vine 14.

  • Tightens reinforced vines around targets, combining restraint with physical damage 13 14.
  • Produces enough pressure to gouge tree trunks and split bark 14 15.
  • Can reinforce his own body. Tang San experimentally discovers an iron-gray forearm coating that blocks Xiao Chenyu’s wolf claw 16.
  • Sustained restraint consumes Soul Power; maintaining a net around several struggling opponents strains his reserves 16.
  • Against Meng Yiran’s flexible Serpent Body, ordinary entanglement proves ineffective, prompting him to change tactics 37.

Vine Branching

His Second Soul Skill comes from a Thousand-Year Offshoot Vine and expands his control from individual targets to an area 24.

  • Divides existing vines into additional strands; his first demonstration turns three vines into six 24.
  • Combines with Iron Thorn Strangulation so multiple branches tighten simultaneously 24.
  • During the Shrek examination, he deploys sixteen main vines, each capable of further division 29.
  • With Wang Xingyu’s support, broken vines rapidly produce new shoots during the fight against Zhao Wuji 29.

Spider Web Restraint

His Third Soul Skill comes from the Man Faced Demon Spider 39 42.

  • Launches a sticky, dark-purple web measuring approximately three to five meters across 42.
  • Contains poison 42.
  • Tightens further as the trapped target struggles 42.

Clear Sky Hammer

His second Martial Soul is the Clear Sky Sect’s inherited Power Attack System tool Martial Soul 6 7.

  • Manifests as a small, iron-colored hammer with a pronounced impression of weight 7.
  • Forms the attack component of Wang Xingyu’s proposed control-and-burst strategy 5.
  • Tang Hao teaches smithing to train both Tang San’s hands and his hammer use 7 9.

Tang Sect Techniques

  • Mysterious Heaven Skill — his cultivation method, which he shares with Wang Xingyu 8 9.
  • Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon — redirects Dai Mubai’s attack and later guides embedded needles out of Zhao Wuji’s body 26 29.
  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — evasive footwork that produces afterimages and lets him reposition around an opponent 37.
  • Mysterious Jade Hand — reinforces his hand and arm sufficiently to block a Man Faced Demon Spider’s claw, although the impact still drives him backward 39.
  • Projectile techniques — uses improvised stone pellets in combat and demonstrates throwing-knife accuracy that impresses the Dragon Duke 16 41.

Triangle Cycle

A cooperative cultivation method developed with Wang Xingyu and Xiao Wu, using Blue Silver Grass to link all three in a closed circuit 22.

  • Circulates Soul Power continuously without Wang Xingyu deliberately sustaining each transfer 22.
  • Makes their Soul Power denser and allows faster cultivation than practicing alone 22 30.
  • Shares the impact of Soul Ring absorption among the three participants 23 30.
  • Was insufficient by itself to comfortably withstand Tang San’s Thousand-Year Second Soul Ring; Wang Xingyu supplemented it with borrowed Soul Power and life force 24.
  • Tang San later sends his own Soul Power through the circuit to help Xiao Wu absorb her Second Soul Ring 25.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Storage pouch — wears a replacement pouch at his waist when leaving for Shrek, described as a six-foot-square storage pouch 26.
  • Small knife — uses it to deliver the finishing blow to the Iron Thorn Vine 14.
  • Dragon Whisker Needles — associated with the purchase from Flender’s shop; Tang San removes embedded needles from Zhao Wuji after the entrance examination 29 31.
  • External Soul Bone — acquired with the Man Faced Demon Spider’s ring. Its eight spider legs are retractable, and the bone can grow alongside its owner 40.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father and smithing teacher. His emotional withdrawal and eventual departure distress Tang San, but their reunion confirms his continued protection 7 20 31.
  • Ah Yin — Mother, whom Tang San has never met. Learning of her sacrifice establishes his blood feud with those responsible in Spirit Hall 6.
  • Wang Xingyu — Childhood friend, cultivation partner, fellow Tang Sect founder, and youngest sworn sibling. Wang Xingyu guides his Soul Ring choices; Tang San reciprocates by teaching him the Mysterious Heaven Skill 8 13 20 21.
  • Xiao Wu — Fellow student, frequent sparring partner, and second sworn sibling. She offers him family after Tang Hao leaves; he later risks immediate pursuit when the Titan Giant Ape takes her 11 15 20 38.
  • Old Jack — Village elder who celebrates his awakening and helps arrange his work-study enrollment 6 9.
  • Yu Xiaogang / Grandmaster — Identifies his Twin Martial Souls on their first meeting, but does not gain his discipleship in that encounter. Later evaluates his combat weaknesses during Shrek training 10 48.
  • Dai Mubai — Shrek senior and sparring opponent. Tang San redirects his attack during their first confrontation and later faces his combined Soul Skills in training 26 47.
  • Zhao Wuji — Shrek entrance examiner. Tang San fights him as part of the applicant team and afterward removes the needles embedded in his body 28 29.
  • Meng Yiran — Rival in disputes over hunted Soul Beasts. Her Serpent Body counters his entanglement, while their later throwing-knife contest ends in his victory 37 40 41.
