Appearance

  • Usual attire: Black armor and a black cloak 8.
  • Facial markings: Several black stripes obscure his features 8.
  • Expression: Usually cold and difficult to read, though he becomes noticeably warmer toward Jun Yan 8 31.
  • Elder attire: Bright red ceremonial robes marking his status within Spirit Hall 22.
  • Martial Soul manifestation: An illusory shadow surrounded by faint black light; silver flames envelop him when activating his fusion skill with Yue Guan 9 26.

Personality

Gui Mei is taciturn and initially stern. When accepting Jun Yan into the Enforcement Corps, he promises protection from bullying but warns him not to use his family connections as an excuse to slack off. Before entering Basi Valley, he privately instructs Jun Yan to retreat behind him if danger arises 8.

He takes the threat posed by Evil Soul Masters seriously. Rather than wait for reinforcements, he argues that delaying could cost more lives if the enemy’s rapid cultivation depends on killing people. After recovering from the disastrous mission, he nevertheless defends Luse from harsh punishment, acknowledging that a Soul Saint could struggle to gather accurate intelligence on Soul Douluo opponents 8 13.

Gratitude eventually outweighs his earlier insistence on discipline: after Jun Yan helps save his life, Gui Mei allows him to cultivate at home while his mission credits continue accumulating. When questioned by Qian Jun, Gui Mei openly accepts responsibility for the arrangement 13 22.

With Yue Guan, his reserve gives way to teasing and bickering. He repeatedly calls him “Chrysanthemum Guan” despite Yue Guan’s objections, and insists that Jun Yan address him as “Big Brother Gui” rather than simply “Old Ghost” 23 38.

Abilities & Skills

Ghost Martial Soul

Gui Mei’s Martial Soul allows him to assume an illusory, ghostlike form and attack through shadows and ghostly manifestations 9 10.

  • Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms him into a faint phantom surrounded by black light 9.
  • Speed: Moves as a black shadow and closes distances rapidly, making speed a central part of his fighting style 8 9 10.
  • Ghostly claws: Creates enormous hands to seize opponents or releases eight purple-black claw blades 9 10.
  • Ghost vortex: Forms a small black vortex in his palm that releases attacking ghostly figures 10.

Documented Soul Skills

Skill Effect Demonstrated limits
Second Soul Skill Raises ten purple-black stone gates, each bearing a ghost face and a hooked chain. The chains form a barrier that confines an opponent 10. Prevents the bat Evil Soul Master from escaping as scattered bats, but his giant bat form breaks the barrier 10.
Fifth Soul Skill Creates a broad shadow beneath the target, from which numerous shadowy hands emerge to restrain them 10. Temporarily binds the injured ghost Evil Soul Master, who later cuts the hands apart with ghost blades 10.
Eighth Soul Skill Surrounds an enemy with purple-black skulls capable of exploding when struck 10. Injures the ghost Evil Soul Master but does not prevent him from rejoining the battle 10.

Two Extremes Stillness Domain

A Martial Soul Fusion Skill performed with Yue Guan. Gui Mei releases silver flames while Yue Guan releases golden flames; their bodies merge, and their eighteen Soul Rings combine into a gold-and-silver halo 26.

  • Effect: Simultaneously freezes opponents’ movements and skills 26.
  • Area: The halo expands to more than one hundred meters in diameter during the confrontation with the Demon Soul Great White Shark King 26.
  • Transformation suppression: Prevents the Shark King from returning to her shark form while immobilized 26.
  • Multiple targets: Holds all seven Sacred Pillar Guardians long enough for Spirit Hall’s other elders to strike them 34 35.
  • Limit: Trapping seven experts exhausts both users’ Soul Power, causing the domain to shatter and the pair to fall from the sky 35.

Bipolar Slowing Domain

The evolved form of their fusion skill, developed after Gui Mei and Yue Guan absorb their respective Immortal Herbs 38.

  • Effect: Slows time rather than merely reducing movement speed, as demonstrated by Jun Yan’s Wood Spike slowing inside the domain and regaining its original speed outside it 38.
  • Maximum slowing: Can slow time by up to six times 38.
  • Tested duration: Their use of the evolved skill lasts approximately as long as an incense stick burns 39.

Weaknesses

  • Holy energy: His Ghost Martial Soul is especially vulnerable to the Six-Winged Angel’s holy light. Qian Xunji’s treatment burns his body even while purifying the curse 12 13.
  • Soul-targeting attacks: His ghostly form cannot evade the Evil Soul Master’s sacrificial curse because it directly targets his soul 10.
  • Fusion dependence: Both documented domains require Yue Guan’s participation 26 38.

History

Enforcement Corps and the Basi Valley Mission

Gui Mei spends years hunting Evil Soul Masters through Spirit Hall’s Enforcement Corps, earning enough recognition that even a newly emerged Evil Soul Master knows his name. Having previously dealt with Jun Kuang, he accepts Jun Yan into the corps at the latter’s request 8 9.

For Jun Yan’s first mission, Gui Mei leads him and eight Soul Saints to Afaluo City. Luse reports that their target has reached rank eighty-four and destroyed a reconnaissance squad in Basi Valley. Gui Mei refuses to wait for reinforcements and immediately takes his team to the valley 8.

After finding no enemy, he divides his nine subordinates into three search parties, believing his speed will let him reach any group that signals for help. The decision proves disastrous: two concealed Evil Soul Masters kill six Soul Saints before revealing themselves 8 9.

Gui Mei gains the upper hand against both opponents, but the ghost Martial Soul user sacrifices his life to curse Gui Mei’s soul. The bat Martial Soul user then self-destructs. Jun Yan’s Wood Clone shields Gui Mei from part of the explosion, but he is left gravely injured, while the two remaining Soul Saints die 10 11.

Rescue and Recovery

Jun Yan sustains Gui Mei with life energy while Yue Guan seeks treatment. Ye Tianxing heals his physical injuries but cannot remove the curse, which continually drains his vitality and Soul Power. He recommends purification through the Six-Winged Angel’s holy power, warning that it will also harm Gui Mei 11 12.

Yue Guan brings him to Pope Hall, where Qian Xunji purifies the curse as Jun Yan supplies life energy. After Gui Mei awakens, Jun Yan continues healing the burns caused by the holy light. Gui Mei thanks the Pope and learns how much Jun Yan contributed to his survival 12 13.

Sea God Island Expedition

After becoming a Titled Douluo and elder, Gui Mei joins Spirit Hall’s expedition against Sea God Island. He and Yue Guan immobilize the Demon Soul Great White Shark King with their fusion skill, allowing Qian Jun and Jiang Mo to wound her 22 26.

At Sea Maiden City, their domain freezes all seven Sacred Pillar Guardians and enables devastating follow-up attacks. The effort exhausts them, and Jun Yan catches them with his wooden figure as they fall. Sea Maiden Douluo’s subsequent sacrifice forces Spirit Hall into retreat 34 35.

Gui Mei and Yue Guan escape with Jun Yan and help direct more than five hundred regrouped Soul Masters back toward the warships. Unlike elders who fled ahead, the pair retain the troops’ respect because they remained in battle until their Soul Power was exhausted 35.

Command and the Immortal Herb

Following the expedition’s failure, Qian Xunji orders Qian Jun and Jiang Mo into three years of seclusion and appoints Gui Mei and Yue Guan to lead the Enforcement Corps. After clearing their accumulated duties, they accompany Jun Yan to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in Sunset Forest 36 37.

Jun Yan gives Gui Mei the Narcissus Jade Muscle Bone, which Yue Guan identifies as particularly suitable for him. Absorbing it raises his Soul Power by one level and improves his cultivation speed. The resonance between his and Yue Guan’s enhanced powers produces the Bipolar Slowing Domain 37 38.

Equipment / Items

  • Soul Tool — Used to collect the bodies of fallen Enforcement Corps members in Basi Valley 9.
  • Narcissus Jade Muscle Bone — An Immortal Herb gifted by Jun Yan. Gui Mei consumes its petals and then its stamens under Yue Guan’s instructions before refining its medicinal power 37 38.

Relationships

  • Yue Guan — Closest friend, longtime colleague, and Martial Soul Fusion Skill partner. Yue Guan urgently seeks treatment when Gui Mei is near death; their habitual teasing continues even after they become elders 8 11 12 23 38.
  • Jun Yan — Initially a junior entrusted to him for training, later his lifesaver and younger-brother figure. Gui Mei protects his freedom to cultivate, accepts responsibility for that favoritism, and receives an Immortal Herb from him 8 13 22 37 38.
  • Jun Kuang — An earlier acquaintance whose request leads Gui Mei to accept Jun Yan into the Enforcement Corps 8.
  • Qian Xunji — Pope and superior. Saves Gui Mei by purifying his curse and later places him and Yue Guan in command of the Enforcement Corps 12 13 36.
  • Qian Jun and Jiang Mo — Senior elders and expedition commanders who initially outrank him within the Enforcement Corps. Their enforced seclusion leaves the corps under Gui Mei and Yue Guan’s leadership 21 36 37.
  • Ye Tianxing — Healer who repairs his injuries and devises the treatment needed to remove his curse safely 11 12.
