Chapter 20
The girl was very tall.
She looked delicate, but as soon as she came a little closer, Su Lin realized that she was taller than he was, and he stood at 183 centimeters.
She lowered her head and gazed gently at the inferior Zerg standing before the bookshelf.
"Shh..."
Seemingly oblivious to how imposing her height made her, the girl pressed a finger to her rosy lips and gave Su Lin a sweet smile.
"Let me tell you a little secret," she whispered. "There's one and only one human in this universe whom I love, and that's my lover..."
It took Su Lin a moment to realize what the girl was saying. His eyes widened in shock.
Wait, did she say...
"I love my human lover very much. To me, he's one of a kind in this universe," the girl said, gently resting a hand on her chest. "We're going to get married, so I wanted to learn about the world he comes from."
If necessary, I'd even be willing to preserve a small star region of human civilization for him.
Blinking, the yellow-eyed Zerg girl noticed the stiff expression on the face of the inferior young larva before her.
"But you'd better not tell anyone else about this."
The girl blinked, her voice growing quieter.
Even from her tone alone, he could hear how deeply the girl loved her "human" lover.
Unfortunately, that sweetness shattered Su Lin's heart into pieces in an instant.
The girl already had a lover, the kind she could marry. No wonder she had asked so many questions before about breeding periods, raising children, and even laying eggs inside the body.
At that moment, Su Lin didn't know whether he should be surprised that a romance between a human and a Zerg existed at all, or pained that his extremely brief
crush
had suddenly come to nothing.
Or both?
But just as Su Lin's heart was breaking, the sweetness in the girl's eyes gradually faded.
Whatever she had recalled, a shadow gradually clouded her honey-colored eyes.
"...But humans really are so hard to understand."
The girl sighed, as though she were speaking to Su Lin, yet also as though she were talking to herself.
"I once accidentally told him about a little flaw of mine. At the time, he even said it didn't count as a flaw at all, and that he liked me that way."
Su Lin could vaguely sense the change in the girl's mood.
Was it his imagination? As the girl's mood sank, her figure seemed to grow a little... blurry.
Su Lin couldn't help rubbing his eyes. His eyes must have been playing tricks on him. For a fleeting instant just now, he seemed to have seen something strange. Something hideous, twisted, and enormous.
But the shadow had lingered for such a short time that it had vanished in the blink of an eye. The pure and lovely Zerg girl was still the one in his sight.
And the girl was still caught up in the troubles of love.
"...But from that day on, he never appeared before me again. It's so strange. If he didn't like me that way, why didn't he tell me? I really could have changed. But he said it didn't matter, that he would still love me even if I had flaws. If I'd known, I wouldn't have said anything."
As the Zerg recalled the torment of the past few days, an unfamiliar, immense pain surged in his heart.
After hearing the girl's account, Su Lin's expression instantly grew exceptionally complicated.
From the girl's few words, Su Lin had no trouble piecing together the wicked true face of that "human lover."
He was a very poor human male who had clawed his way out of a small place and secured a public-sector job purely by being good at studying, who was full of sweet talk and intent on tricking a pretty girl into marrying him.
Yes, the kind of cunning poor man everyone in the human world would condemn.
Yet someone an ordinary human woman would frown at with a single glance had utterly won over this innocent, pure Zerg from afar.
"You mean you've never even met him?"
Su Lin asked in disbelief.
"You don't know his real name, his address, or any real information about him... and you're planning to marry him?"
The girl gazed innocently at Su Lin.
"But his love is real," the Zerg said seriously. "I can feel it. He truly loves me."
Su Lin: "..."
Zerg girl: "He really is a very honest, decent person. He wouldn't lie to me."
Chapter 20
Su Lin was heartbroken.
"Wait, listen to me-"
Su Lin was about to try to persuade the innocent girl before him not to be fooled, but just then, someone abruptly threw open the library doors.
"Su Lin!"
A silver figure swept in from outside, his voice urgent.
It was Medises.
"Sen... Master?"
Su Lin stared in surprise at his senior, who had suddenly burst in.
When Medises saw the figure in the library besides Su Lin, a crack appeared in his usually ice-cold expression.
At that moment, even someone as oblivious as Su Lin could sense that Medises had become exceptionally tense and wary.
"Your Highness Saint Ariel. We did not know you had arrived. The Security Committee failed to come out to welcome you; please forgive us."
Before Su Lin could react, Medises had already bowed slightly and lowered his head to the "girl," paying his respects.
"I hope my servant Zerg has not been discourteous," Medises said tensely. "He was only recently rescued from the human research institute and has yet to receive any etiquette training. I beg Your Highness's forgiveness."
