Background / History
Adoption into the Matou Family
Sakura is Tokiomi Tohsaka's daughter and Rin's sister, adopted into the Matou family. There, she undergoes Crest Worm modification that leaves her physically and psychologically traumatized. Zouken regards her exceptional potential as a means of restoring the Matou family's declining power, including through her future offspring 23 36 38.
Kariya enters the Holy Grail War intending to obtain the Grail in exchange for Sakura's freedom. Jizi challenges this arrangement, pointing out that victory would not guarantee Zouken kept his promise, and persuades Kariya to pursue a different means of saving her 23 34 35.
Rescue and Recovery
At the Matou residence, Jizi discovers that Zouken has concealed his consciousness inside Sakura. Rather than forcibly interrupting the modification, she places her mask on Sakura and melts and absorbs the worms along with their mana. Sakura's purple hair returns to its original black during the extraction. Jizi cautions that after-effects remain possible but estimates that proper care will allow a full recovery in two to three years 36.
After the rescue, Sakura begins greeting Kariya and helping with housework—marked improvements over her previous emotional withdrawal.
