Background

Origins and Warring States Period

The novel's account traces the Uchiha to Indra, elder son of Hagoromo. After losing the struggle over Hagoromo's teachings, Indra founded the Uchiha clan, while his brother Asura founded the Senju clan. Their descendants became locked in a prolonged conflict that defined the Warring States Period. 306

During the era investigated by Senya, the clan maintained grain villages and fielded nearly five thousand ninja within its compound. Senya detected three Mangekyō users and identified a fourth—an emotionless Mangekyō-bearing “Nameless Girl” used by the clan as a war weapon. 224 225 232

Uchiha Madara served as Great Elder in this period and secretly prepared to overthrow the aging clan head, Uchiha Zhihao, to seize his Mangekyō and pursue the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Black Zetsu manipulated the ensuing conflict between the Uchiha, Senju, Sarutobi, and Ino–Shika–Chō clans to weaken the Uchiha. 226 227

Founding of Konoha

The Uchiha and Senju later founded Konohagakure together. Senya argues that the village's original purpose was not abstract peace, but the protection of both clans' members. 6

By the story's opening, distrust of the clan remained severe. Root and Anbu surveilled the Uchiha compound, while Konoha's leadership continued to associate the clan with the Nine-Tails Attack despite the Uchiha having been confined and unable to assist during the crisis. 2 36
