Properties and Function
Nichirin Blades are forged with a mineral that absorbs sunlight. The mineral disrupts a demon's blood-regeneration system; to kill a demon completely, the brain's control system must be severed while regeneration is destroyed. A Nichirin Blade is therefore the simplest and most practical demon-killing weapon, but not the only possible one: any weapon containing the mineral can kill a demon if it fulfills both conditions. 13
- A Demon Slayer without a Nichirin Blade is effectively unable to reliably finish a demon. 85
- Blade colors can change after being drawn by their owner; the color is said to be closely linked to the wielder's personality and strength. 62
- The Swordsmith Village forges the Demon Slayer Corps' weapons, despite not formally belonging to the Corps. 93
- Nichirin Blades can be damaged or broken by sufficiently powerful opponents, including Rui's spider silk and the evolved Demon Father's hardened body. 80 85 88
- A swordsmith reinforced Han Zhiqi's replacement blade with additional metals for increased toughness after his prior blade broke. 106
Crimson Nichirin Blade
A Nichirin Blade can turn red through extreme heat. A demon wounded by a crimson blade suffers temporarily suppressed regeneration, leaving the injury charred and unable to heal normally. 282
- Muichiro Tokito identifies high temperature as the method for making a blade crimson. 282
- Gyomei Himejima turns his Nichirin Blade red during the battle against Kokushibo, enhancing its power. 283
- The Crimson Nichirin Blade is described as the ultimate expression of the weapon. 286
Notable Blades
| Wielder | Blade description | Documented use |
|---|---|---|
| Nohime Kanroji | Pink, retractable soft sword; thin as a cicada wing, whip-like yet resilient, and extendable to 2.5 meters. Its pink scabbard, earth-yellow hilt with wheat-stalk pattern, and six-pointed-star guard were forged by Gang Tiexiong. 62 | Its flexible trajectory enables offense and defense, wrapping around targets, deflecting attacks, and striking from unexpected angles. 28 121 186 |
| Han Zhiqi | Initially silver with a white hilt decorated by a wisteria flower and a snowflake-shaped guard; its blade turns snow-white when drawn. 62 | Releases cold air that can freeze demons and their surroundings, though the original blade breaks while breaching Rui's Killing Eye Cage. 81 88 |
| Tanjiro Kamado | Standard Nichirin Blade used with Water and Sun Breathing. 79 87 | Rui's spider silk breaks it; the broken blade later produces dark flames and allows Tanjiro to cut through Rui's silk. 85 87 |
| Inosuke Hashibira | Twin Nichirin Blades with jagged, saw-like edges. 80 196 | Both blades snap against the evolved Demon Father's hardened neck. 80 |
| Gyomei Himejima | Nichirin weapon capable of turning crimson. 283 | Its red state enhances its power against Kokushibo. 283 |
Limitations
- Decapitation is not automatically sufficient if the blade cannot fully sever a demon's hardened neck. 80 81 281
- Even a partially effective cut may leave a demon able to fight, though wounds caused by Nichirin Blades do not necessarily heal immediately. 81
- Extreme force can snap a blade, leaving its wielder without their principal means of killing demons. 80 85 88
- Nichirin material harms demons on contact. After becoming a demon, Nohime is unable to wield her former blade and experiences immediate burning pain when touching it. 257
History
Nichirin Blades are established as the Demon Slayer Corps' standard weapons and are forged at the Swordsmith Village, where every household participates in weapon production. Demon Slayers patrolling the village are commonly identified by the blades at their waists. 93 196
After joining the Corps, Nohime receives a Nichirin Blade alongside her uniform. 58 Gang Tiexiong later delivers specialized blades for Nohime and Han Zhiqi: Nohime's pink retractable sword is designed to suit her Love Breathing and extraordinary physique, while Han's silver blade turns snow-white in his hand. 62
Han's first blade is ultimately broken in the fight against Rui, after he uses its cold air to freeze and rupture the Killing Eye Cage. 88 He later receives a tougher replacement blade, reinforced with other metals to better withstand both Rui-like attacks and the strain imposed by his own wrist strength. 106
Following Nohime's transformation into a demon, she must abandon her Nichirin Blade because its sunlight-absorbing material harms her. She replaces it with a flexible bone sword formed from her spine. 257
Trivia
- Gang Tiexiong compares Nohime's blade to the Love Hashira's soft sword and predicts that the Corps may gain another “little Love Hashira.” 62
- Han Zhiqi retains his Nichirin Blade even after leaving the Demon Slayer Corps, as Kagaya Ubuyashiki argues that the sword recognizes its owner and belongs to the Swordsmith Village rather than the Corps. 159
