Background / History
Muzan was originally transformed into a demon by a mysterious doctor. He spent nearly a thousand years seeking the Blue Spider Lily in pursuit of becoming an “Ultimate Creature” capable of walking in sunlight, unaware that Tsugikuni Sōji had fabricated the flower’s importance to mislead him. 132 280
After being severely wounded by Tsugikuni Yoriichi, Muzan vanished for nearly a century and only reappeared after Yoriichi’s death. He created the Twelve Kizuki to oppose the Demon Slayer Corps and continue his search for power. 15 71
Muzan eventually learned that Tsugikuni Sōji—the ancestor of the Tsugikuni family and possibly the doctor responsible for Muzan’s transformation—was a more ancient force manipulating demons from the shadows. Unable to defeat Sōji alone, Muzan entered an uneasy alliance with Yasha, another of Sōji’s experimental subjects. 161
Appearance
Muzan is usually associated with crimson eyes and an oppressive blood-soaked aura. In his recovered true form, he appears as a white-haired, crimson-eyed monster with a bare chest and a body covered in sharp teeth. 161 274
- Crimson eyes capable of terrifying demons beneath him. 161 162
- White hair in his true form. 274
- Numerous sharp teeth spread across his transformed body. 274
- Back tendrils used to impale, tear apart, and kill opponents. 274 285
Personality
Muzan is arrogant, paranoid, and intensely fearful of death. He considers demons beneath him expendable tools, responding to their failures with rage and threatening punishment or death rather than offering support. 94 162
Despite presenting himself as the strongest being in the world, he hides within the Infinity Castle and reacts with panic when his plans fail. His retreat from the final conflict follows the loss of major subordinates, Tamayo’s poison, and his realization that Kagaya Ubuyashiki had anticipated his moves. 227 285
Abilities & Skills
Demonic Progenitor Physiology
Muzan is the source of the demon blood carried by the Twelve Kizuki. Demons created through his blood can be controlled by him, and his cells can be used to transform humans into demons. 71 131
- Created the Twelve Kizuki as elite demons with specialized abilities. 71
- Could replenish the Twelve Kizuki rapidly, while the Demon Slayer Corps required years or decades to produce a Hashira. 93
- Possesses extreme regeneration; he can potentially regrow from even a small piece of flesh given enough time. 287
- Sunlight remains fatal to him, reducing him to ash if he is exposed. 287
Blood Control and Intimidation
Muzan can exert direct pressure over demons carrying his blood. His presence causes their blood to burn uncontrollably and overwhelms them with instinctive fear. 162
- Projected a blood-red aura that forced the Twelve Kizuki into silence and submission. 162
- Used his authority to issue orders, replace fallen Kizuki, and condemn subordinates he suspected of betrayal. 94 162 165
- His control is not absolute over demons who have broken free of his influence, such as Tamayo. 71
True Form and Tendrils
While recovering from Tamayo’s poison, Muzan emerged from a giant flesh mass in a monstrous true form. 274
- Generates tendrils from his back for high-speed attacks. 274 285
- Uses tendrils to impale and dismember demon slayers. 274
- Retained enough strength to kill numerous lower-ranking demon slayers while fleeing the Infinity Castle. 285
- His movements and stamina were significantly reduced by poison during the final battle. 286
Infinity Castle Command
Muzan used Nakime’s Infinity Castle as a mobile fortress, concealment site, and battlefield designed to divide his enemies. 227 262
- Ordered Nakime to separate Hashira and weaker demon slayers throughout the castle. 262
- Sent lower-ranking demon slayers to himself as food while he detoxified and recovered. 262
- Killed Nakime when Yushiro’s control of her threatened to bring the castle and its occupants to the surface. 274 275
Relationships
- Tamayo — Former servant who escaped his control after he was weakened by Tsugikuni Yoriichi; she spent centuries developing medicine to inhibit his regeneration and ultimately poisoned him. 71 247 274
- Twelve Kizuki — His elite demon force, created to counter the Demon Slayer Corps and carry out his commands. 71 161
- Yasha — Uneasy ally and fellow target of Tsugikuni Sōji; Yasha openly challenged Muzan’s authority and protected Meiyin from him. 161 162
- Meiyin / Hyōshi Yū — Twelve Kizuki subordinate whom Muzan suspected of disloyalty due to her connection with Han Zhiqi and Yasha; he ordered her death. 162 165
- Nakime — Infinity Castle’s controller and Upper Rank Four; Muzan killed her when her control of the castle was compromised. 227 274 275
- Tsugikuni Sōji — The suspected doctor who transformed Muzan and the hidden mastermind Muzan feared; their shared hostility led Muzan to cooperate with Yasha. 161 240
- Han Zhiqi — Opponent during the final battle; Han later preserved Muzan’s heart in ice and became the target of Muzan’s attempted possession. 286 288 291
- Nezuko — A special demon Muzan sought because she could recover without consuming blood and possessed blood lethal to demons. 163
Story Role / Major Arcs
Undermining the Demon Slayer Corps
Muzan’s forces interfered with the Mount Fujikasane selection process, threatening the Corps’ source of recruits. Kagaya Ubuyashiki concluded that the attack was intended to cut off the Corps’ “fresh blood” and weaken it over time. 59
He then targeted Incepet Division strongholds and appeared to be preparing to isolate and eliminate the Hashira individually. 93
Punishment of the Twelve Kizuki
After the deaths of Rui, Kage, Shokura, and Gyokko, Muzan summoned the Twelve Kizuki to the Infinity Castle and condemned their repeated failures. 161 162
He falsely announced Meiyin’s death and claimed Shokura had devoured her, then later moved to eliminate Meiyin personally after suspecting her loyalty to Yasha and her demon-slayer brother. 94 162 165
Pursuit of Nezuko
Muzan ordered the Twelve Kizuki to capture Nezuko after learning that she could recover through sleep rather than blood consumption and that her blood harmed demons. 163
His forces used the Swordsmith Village conflict to target Nezuko, eliminate Meiyin, and create further conflict between demons and demon slayers. 193 196 197
Ultimate Battle
Muzan launched a large-scale assault on the Demon Slayer Corps, seeking the Blue Spider Lily protected by Tamayo at the Butterfly Mansion. Tamayo deliberately positioned herself as bait so that he would consume the poison concentrated within her body. 247
Poisoned and forced into his true form, Muzan retreated to the Infinity Castle to recover. When the castle’s control was compromised, he killed Nakime and emerged before completing his detoxification. 262 274
After losing key subordinates and realizing he had underestimated Kagaya Ubuyashiki, Muzan attempted to flee the Infinity Castle. Demon slayers surrounded him until six Hashira, Tanjiro, and Nohime trapped him in a final battle intended to delay him until sunrise. 285 286 287
Defeat and Remaining Heart
Muzan was defeated after failing to escape the final encirclement. Han Zhiqi later revealed that he had preserved Muzan’s heart inside ice rather than allowing it to be destroyed outright. 287 288
The heart later swallowed Han Zhiqi and attempted to take over his body, revealing that Muzan’s consciousness had survived within it. 291
Notable Quotes
“Gyokko is dead. In just a few months, Rui, Kage, Shokura, and Gyokko have all fallen in battle. And the Hashira... I haven't killed a single one. Is the Demon Slayer Corps too strong, or are you all too weak? What use are you to me?”
— Muzan reprimanding the Twelve Kizuki 162
“That detestable woman, I can't believe she's still causing trouble for me even in death. I should have killed her four hundred years ago.”
— Muzan after Tamayo’s poison forces him from hiding 274
