Background / History
Origin and First Sermon
Dong Wanggong formed from the first wisp of pure Yang Qi. Because the Great Dao of Yang had vanished from this Primordial World, his origin was incomplete, resulting in a female body with a masculine face 37 42.
Dong Wanggong and Xi Wangmu were the first to arrive outside the Purple Heavens Palace for Hongjun’s sermon. Xi Wangmu disapproved of his ostentatious arrival, while Zhurong openly mocked his crown and strength. Although angered, Dong Wanggong restrained himself because he knew he could not defeat even one of the Twelve Ancestral Witches 37.
Appointment and the Empty Immortal Court
The Heavenly Dao instructed Hongjun to complete Dong Wanggong’s Yang origin so that he could become a man and govern male immortals. Hongjun obtained Extreme Yang Power from Chu Feng and performed the transformation at the end of the second sermon. She then appointed Dong Wanggong Head of Male Immortals and bestowed the Dragon Head Staff 42 54 56.
Confident that Hongjun’s endorsement would attract followers, Dong Wanggong founded the Immortal Court. Recruitment failed: the few arrivals were female, and no Daluo Golden Immortal joined. His residence remained occupied largely by his maids and a handful of East Sea rogue cultivators, while Di Jun and Donghuang Taiyi’s newly established Demon Clan attracted countless beings 57.
Dong Wanggong blamed his maids for the recruitment failure and threatened to dock their wages. They instead demanded higher pay and three hundred years of unpaid wages, which he settled with spiritual fruits 57.
Creation of Male Followers
Unable to recruit male immortals, Dong Wanggong appealed to Hongjun. After consulting the Heavenly Dao and obtaining more Extreme Yang Power from Chu Feng, Hongjun refined one hundred Yang Reversal Creation Pills. These could transform female immortals into men, though recipients retaining Yang essence had a better chance of success 58 59.
Dong Wanggong spent a thousand years finding one hundred suitable volunteers, enduring repeated rejection from immortals offended by his proposal. The selected followers took the pills, transformed into male immortals, and pledged their loyalty. He supplied them with spiritual fruits and pills to accelerate their cultivation 59.
The male followers attracted large numbers of female immortals seeking dual cultivation rather than political allegiance. With the pills exhausted and Hongjun unavailable, Dong Wanggong could not create more men. Competition over the existing male immortals turned the court into a chaotic institution he struggled to govern 70.
Defeat and Captivity
Bai Ze urged Di Jun to destroy the Immortal Court and seize its fortune. Di Jun initially feared offending Hongjun, but accepted Bai Ze’s argument that replacing an ineffective ruler would fulfill the Dao Ancestor’s intentions 69 70.
When the Demon Clan army arrived, Dong Wanggong invoked his heavenly appointment. Di Jun rejected his authority over her because she was female. Dong Wanggong attacked with the Dragon Head Staff, but Donghuang Taiyi’s Chaos Bell shattered his pure-Yang dragon. Di Jun then trapped him with the River Diagram and Luo Shu and destroyed his body with stellar power 71 72.
Bai Ze persuaded Di Jun to spare his remaining spirit out of respect for Hongjun. Given the choice between death and serving as the Demon Clan’s mascot, Dong Wanggong submitted. His court was destroyed, its fortune seized, and its male immortals taken away for forced dual cultivation 72.
Restoration and Heavenly Marriage
When Di Jun’s original Heavenly Marriage plans became difficult to pursue, Chu Feng proposed Dong Wanggong as an alternative partner capable of harmonizing yin and yang. Hongjun consulted the Heavenly Dao, approved the match, rebuilt Dong Wanggong’s innate Dao body, and supplied a Nine-Turn Soul Gathering Golden Elixir 76.
Di Jun used the elixir to awaken him, then demanded that he accept marriage or be destroyed permanently. Despite regarding marriage to his enemy as a humiliation, Dong Wanggong agreed to survive. Di Jun offered him the positions of Eastern Lord and Heavenly Empress; the wedding proclamation subsequently brought Heavenly Dao blessings to the Demon Clan 77.
Encounter with the Otherworldly Demon Rulers
Chu Feng later brought male counterparts of Di Jun and Donghuang Taiyi from another Primordial World to the Heavenly Court. Male Di Jun mocked Dong Wanggong’s subordinate position and called him a male consort. Dong Wanggong attempted to attack him, but Male Donghuang Taiyi immobilized him with the Chaos Bell 115 116.
Appearance
- Original form: A woman’s body with a man’s face, reflecting his incomplete Yang origin 37.
- Ceremonial clothing: A purple-gold crown and nine-dragon robe at his first appearance 37.
- After transformation: A male body produced by Hongjun’s completion of his origin 56.
- Later attire: A Daoist robe, accompanied by the Dragon Head Staff, during the otherworldly demon rulers’ visit 115.
Personality
Dong Wanggong takes pride in both his innate foundation and Hongjun’s recognition. After his appointment, he considers himself the most exalted person beneath the Dao Ancestor and expects legitimacy alone to draw followers. He reacts to recruitment failures by blaming subordinates rather than recognizing the scarcity of male beings 56 57.
His temper is checked by an awareness of superior strength. He suppresses his anger before the Ancestral Witches, submits to Di Jun after his defeat, and accepts an unwanted marriage rather than die. Nevertheless, insults concerning his humiliation can provoke reckless aggression, as shown by his attempted attack on Male Di Jun 37 72 77 116.
