History
Birth and Origins
The Heavenly Dao arranged for Yuanfeng to conceive Kunpeng and Kong Xuan after the disappearance of the Great Dao of Yang. It used a small amount of Chu Feng’s Extreme Yang Power, making the sisters his children. Although the Heavenly Dao intended them to take male forms, the supplied power was insufficient to support Kunpeng’s transformation 24 78.
The sisters were born as two spiritual eggs amid Five-Colored Divine Light and dim Mystic Light. Their birth depleted Yuanfeng’s origin but fulfilled a requirement of the Heavenly Dao, easing its suppression of the Phoenix Clan and allowing its members to leave their territory without the previous cultivation penalty 35.
Losing the Purple Heavens Palace Seat
Kunpeng seized the fifth cushion at Hongjun’s first lecture through her exceptional speed. After Hong Yun surrendered her own cushion to Zhunti, Zhunti and Jieyin demanded Kunpeng’s seat. She refused, but their combined attack injured her and knocked her from the cushion, which Jieyin then occupied 38 39.
Kunpeng blamed Hong Yun for establishing the precedent that allowed the theft. Hongjun’s subsequent decree that attendees retain their seats at future lectures made the loss permanent. Once the cushions’ connection to sainthood became clear, Kunpeng regarded Hong Yun as the person who had destroyed her opportunity 39 45.
Her resentment persisted through the second lecture. When she openly stared at Hong Yun with killing intent afterward, Zhurong threatened her and Dijiang ordered her away; Kunpeng fled rather than confront the Twelve Ancestral Witches 55 56.
Joining the Demon Clan
Bai Ze recommended Kunpeng as a powerful recruit whose desire for revenge could overcome her preference for independence. Di Jun and Donghuang Taiyi visited the Northern Darkness and offered her the position of Demon Master, access to the clan’s fortune, and assistance against Hong Yun. Kunpeng accepted 64.
Hong Yun’s receipt of the final strand of Primordial Violet Qi intensified Kunpeng’s hatred. She joined Di Jun and Donghuang Taiyi in attacking Hong Yun at the Treasure Distribution Cliff, but Dijiang and Zhurong intervened and forced the demon leaders to withdraw 66 67.
Kunpeng later participated in a larger ambush supported by the Demon Clan army, Jieyin, and Zhunti. She attacked Hong Yun directly, declaring that their feud could end only in death. Chu Feng and the Twelve Ancestral Witches defeated the attacking forces 78 80.
Settlement and Sainthood
After the battle, Chu Feng attempted to end the feud by revealing that he was Kunpeng’s father. Kunpeng contacted Yuanfeng, who confirmed his claim, although Yuanfeng herself did not understand the Heavenly Dao’s role in the sisters’ conception. Kunpeng remained unwilling to abandon her lost chance at sainthood merely because of their family connection 78 80.
Chu Feng then offered her a strand of Primordial Violet Qi in exchange for settling her karma with Hong Yun. Kunpeng accepted and left to comprehend it, but still refused to acknowledge Chu Feng as her father 81.
Unable to find her breakthrough opportunity, Kunpeng became anxious while watching humanity’s fortune flourish. Cangjie’s achievement inspired her to gather demons and create Demon Script from the forms of the sun, moon, stars, birds, and beasts. The resulting merit enabled her to become a Saint and increased the Demon Clan’s fortune 91.
The Golden Crow Scheme
Despite her lingering hostility toward Jieyin and Zhunti over the stolen cushion, Kunpeng agreed to cooperate with them after they promised to support her ascent to the Heavenly Emperor’s Throne. Their plan required her to lure Di Jun’s ten Golden Crow daughters away from the Sun Star 137.
Kunpeng approached the princesses with a kindly manner and encouraged them to explore the Primordial World. Their departure led to widespread destruction, including the burning of Kuafu’s tribe, and ultimately to nine Golden Crows being killed by Hou Yi. Di Jun held Kunpeng responsible 138 140 150.
Laozi, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti later persuaded Di Jun to reconcile with Kunpeng because the Demon Clan needed her strength. Kunpeng initially refused to return, but Zhunti privately suggested that she could inherit the Heavenly Court if the witches and demons destroyed one another. Tempted by becoming Demon Emperor, she accepted 149 150.
Removal from the Demon Clan
Yuanfeng summoned Kunpeng home and condemned her involvement in the approaching calamity. Kunpeng defended her position as Demon Master and dismissed her mother’s warnings. Chu Feng forced her to kneel under his pressure and ordered her to remain at the Volcano of Immortality 150 151.
Chu Feng negotiated her release from the Demon Clan by raising Di Jun and Donghuang Taiyi’s cultivation. Di Jun then swore a Heavenly Dao oath stripping Kunpeng of her title and ending all karmic ties between them. The resulting loss of fortune gravely weakened Kunpeng 151.
Chu Feng promised to help her pursue Proving the Dao by Force and attain Hunyuan Grand Unity once her temperament had settled. Kunpeng respectfully accepted and entered seclusion as a Phoenix Clan princess. Much later, the supposedly sealed Demon Master Palace remained a pretext: she was still staying at the Volcano of Immortality 152 269.
Appearance
- Humanoid form: Wears Daoist robes and is described with icy eyes and a cold, unapproachable presence 39.
- True form: An ancient exotic beast capable of taking the forms of a giant kun and a winged peng 64.
- Battle manifestation: Produces the phantom of an enormous bird whose talons tear through the void 78.
Personality
Kunpeng is solitary, proud, and resistant to authority. She initially rejects joining the Demon Clan because she values her independence, and she struggles to accept Chu Feng as her father even after Yuanfeng confirms their relationship 64 80 81.
Her resentment is enduring and often directed at an indirect target. Rather than treating Hong Yun’s surrender and the Western pair’s assault as separate acts, she holds Hong Yun responsible for her humiliation and lost opportunity. Yuanfeng describes her as gloomy and ruthless, while Chu Feng judges her schemes calculating but shortsighted 39 71 78 150.
Ambition repeatedly overrides her distrust. The promise of sainthood persuades her to settle her feud, while the prospect of ruling the Heavenly Court draws her into cooperation with Jieyin and Zhunti despite their earlier treatment of her 81 137 150.
