Background / History

When Sage Durvasa's curse caused the gods to lose wealth and luxury, Lakshmi disappeared from Vishnu's side. As a member of the Trimurti, Vishnu could not casually descend without causing world fluctuations; he required proper karma and an invitation from Indra and the gods to act. 3

During the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, Vishnu confronted Golden-Eyed. His Chakravyuha could part the ocean and cut Mandara Mountain, yet it failed to damage the Asura due to the latter's blessing. Vishnu then manifested Kurma beneath Mandara Mountain to support it and negotiated for the Wish-Fulfilling Divine Tree to go to the gods in exchange for the next treasure belonging to the Asuras. 14 25 He later intervened alongside Shiva during the Halahala crisis, catching the defeated Vayu before Shiva swallowed the poison. 27

Vishnu continued to act against threats to cosmic order, including Motu and Gedaba's rampage, Narasimha's loss of control, the theft of the Vedas, and Bhavivana's assault on Vaikuntha. Bhavivana's Brahma-blessed Avososi staff absorbed the Chakravyuha, forcing Vishnu to warn the Heavenly Gods rather than confront the Asura directly. 67 118 221

When the Asuras occupied the Heavenly Realm, Vishnu became Vamana, his fifth documented avatar, intending to reclaim the realm through wisdom rather than force. 271 He later instructed Indra on Brahman-Atman Union, teaching that incarnations and their stories across the eras are necessary for liberation from karma and the world. 520

After Shiva returned to asceticism and stopped observing the world, Vishnu took responsibility for maintaining all things, restoring the weakened powers of the Heavenly Gods. 564

Appearance

Vishnu commonly appears as an azure- or blue-skinned, four-armed deity with lotus-like eyes. He wears yellow or golden robes, a long sacred sash, a flower garland, and the radiant Jostubha jewel upon his chest. 14 221 233 497

Vishnu is usually serene, gentle, and smiling, even during tense negotiations or crises. He favors measured solutions and repeatedly seeks to preserve balance rather than simply destroy his enemies. 25 604

His benevolence has clear limits. Vishnu refused Indra's proposal to immediately kill Golden-Eyed's army as excessively harsh, but he also openly disapproves of Asuras who threaten righteousness and will act decisively when preservation demands it. 15 118

He is strategic and long-sighted, preferring wisdom, karmic timing, and indirect action when direct force would worsen a crisis. This outlook guides his Vamana incarnation, his warning against mass Tapasya by the Heavenly Gods, and his approach to threats protected by boons. 234 271 604
