Background

Shiva once removed Brahma's arrogant fifth head through his Bhairava incarnation after it insulted the Vedas. The act enraged Daksha, who forbade all living beings from offering sacrifices to Shiva. Daksha's daughter Sati—an incarnation of Shiva's feminine power—was then Shiva's wife. 6

Shakti was separated from Shiva because his perfection as the god of destruction would otherwise destroy the world immediately upon its creation. Shakti reincarnated first as Sati and later as Parvati, who regained her memories as Sati after awakening her divine power. 201

When Parvati covered Shiva's eyes, the world fell into darkness. A drop of Shiva's sweat merged with Parvati's power amid dark thunder and became Andhaka. 69
