Background

The Earth Realm is the homeland of the Asuras, distinct from the Human Realm and the Heavenly Realm. 2 Their two major branches are the Daitiya, sons of Kashyapa and Diti, and the Danava, sons of Kashyapa and Danu. 11

The Asuras repeatedly clash with the Heavenly Gods for control of the Earth Realm, the Heavenly Realm, Amrita, and divine resources. Their forces are not uniformly aligned: succession disputes, rival generals, and competing kings regularly fracture their leadership. 14 153 246

Society and Leadership

The Asura King title is closely connected to the power of the Earth Realm. Golden-Eyed was strengthened when that power returned to him, while Prahli merged with it upon taking the throne. 19 249

Golden-Eyed and the Churning of the Ocean of Milk

Golden-Eyed emerged as the first major Asura King opposing the Heavenly Gods. Protected by Brahma’s blessing, he withstood Vishnu’s Chakravyuha and led a vast Asura army during the churning of the Ocean of Milk. 14 17

Golden Bed, Hayagriva, and Vajra Body

After Golden-Eyed’s fall, Golden Bed led powerful Asura forces against the gods but was eventually killed. 42 69 Hayagriva later pursued the Vedas with Motu and Gedaba, invaded the Heavenly Realm, and left statues of himself throughout it before his own defeat. 81 99 118

Vajra Body then rose through Tapasya, defeated Agni, Surya, and Soma, and occupied the Heavenly Realm with captured gods in tow. 129 139

Andhaka’s Campaign

Sukra selected Andhaka as Asura King due to his connection to Mahadeva. After gaining his boons, Andhaka rallied the Asuras, obtained Maya Asura’s enhanced Vimana, and declared war on the Heavenly Realm. 153 168 181

Prahli and Sutala Realm

Indra infiltrated the Earth Realm as Prahli, won the Asura King Selection Ceremony, and merged with the Earth Realm’s power. 245 249 As Prahli, he later created Sutala Realm and led Asuras willing to abide by righteousness there. 279

Resurrection Pool and Renewed War

Sukra used the Resurrection Pool to restore fallen Asuras after Indra’s assault on the Heavenly Realm. 568 571 The Blood Seed Asura’s resurrection-based growth and Sunba’s attempt to control Yama intensified the Asuras’ later threat. 571 590

Coexistence, Competition, and Continued Conflict

Shiva declared that Asuras could reside in the Heavenly Realm, briefly shifting the conflict toward coexistence and a proposed duel for temporary rule. 561 Indra later judged a Three Realms competition between the Heavenly Gods and Asuras; the Heavenly Gods won the final tug-of-war and were named the leaders of the next era. 608

Despite these attempts at order, Indra continued to treat Asura discipline as a problem, holding a banquet to test them before beginning their training. 645 Bhanda’s creation of the Brave Fear Asuras and Adamo Asuras demonstrates that new Asura threats continued to emerge. 683
