Background

Surya is the son of Kashyapa and Aditi, making him Indra’s brother. During Sage Durvasa’s curse upon the gods, Surya’s divine power was greatly diminished, yet he continued his solar duties while fearing that the weakened Heavenly Realm would fall to the Asuras. 1

He supported Indra’s decision to undertake Tapasya and promised him a blessing upon its completion. He ultimately bestowed an evolving Golden Solar God Armor, whose layers could be formed through Indra’s arduous cultivation and tailored to Indra’s wishes. 2 7

Surya’s family life is troubled. Saloniya, unable to endure his heat, left her shadow, Chhaya, in her place; Surya later abandoned Chhaya after discovering the substitution. Chhaya’s Tapasya to Shiva led to the birth of Sani, whose divine eyes possess the power to restrain Surya. 171 172

Appearance

Surya normally appears as a radiant, handsome god in golden garments or armor, surrounded by scorching sunlight. He was originally a round, wheel-like being before Vishwakarma reshaped him into his present human form. 35 51

His confidence is tempered by a strong instinct for self-preservation. When faced with overwhelming Asura forces, he has chosen flight over direct confrontation and refused Narada’s request to rescue captured gods during Golden Bed’s invasion. 46 Even so, he is capable of acting decisively when his family or the Heavenly Realm is threatened, such as accepting Bhumiga’s challenge after learning that an Asura king had captured his son. 182

Surya values recognition as a father and as a divine authority. His rivalry with Sani repeatedly exposes his pride, but he eventually publicly acknowledges Chhaya as his wife and Sani as his son. 175 362
