Background

Kartikeya originated from Shiva's overwhelming divine energy. When Narada accidentally dropped the energy while under Indra's silence spell, it shattered into six pieces; each became an infant who descended from the sky. Shiva entrusted the six children to the Pleiades Goddesses, named them Kartikeya, and declared that they required a teacher 313 314.

Vishwamitra was appointed to assist his upbringing, while Indra became his martial-arts teacher. Kartikeya grew at an extraordinary rate, reaching the appearance of a six-year-old within days, though Vishwamitra still insisted that the thirteen auspicious rituals be observed for his welfare 315 316.

He was raised by the Pleiades Goddesses before learning that Shiva was his biological father. The revelation unsettled him, and his first visit to Kailasa also introduced him to his imprisoned elder brother, Andhaka 335 336.

Appearance

Kartikeya is a radiant divine youth who commonly appears in golden armor, carrying a divine spear and riding the peacock Flower Tail. Before receiving his armor, he trained bare-chested across the Ocean of Milk 321 363.

Kartikeya is intensely competitive and eager to establish himself as a warrior. As a child, he challenged the mounts of the Heavenly Gods, raced Garuda across the Ocean of Milk, and insisted that he could surpass every obstacle placed before him 319 321.

He deeply values Indra's approval. He seeks to inherit his teacher's will, requests the Sacred Thread as recognition of completed discipleship, and repeatedly measures his worth through his ability to protect the Heavenly Realm 337 338.

His confidence frequently becomes arrogance. After defeating the Intoxication demon, he proclaimed himself the world's greatest warrior, dismissed Vishnu's warning, and pursued an invasion of the Earth Realm despite counsel to withdraw 393 395. Defeat leaves him deeply ashamed and emotionally volatile; after being treated formally by the Pleiades Goddesses, he broke apart into six spheres of divine energy 411.

Later experiences make him more reflective. He accepts Ganesha's victory in their race, admits his failures as Devraj, and offers the position of War God to Andhaka because he believes his brother can better protect the Heavenly Realm 544 450 460.

Training and Ascension

Kartikeya trains in Vaikuntha under Indra and Vishwamitra, challenging the Heavenly Gods' mounts as part of his trial to leave. He races Garuda, fights alongside Flower Tail and Red Crown, and is used by Indra as bait to draw hidden Asuras into the open during a demon invasion 319 329 330.

After facing the Asuras Nalanki, Abhva, and Bahuka, Kartikeya is saved by Indra and witnesses his teacher's overwhelming use of God Cleaver. He later receives Shiva's Heavenly Army Commander ritual, Indra's Sacred Thread, and the support of the Heavenly Gods 332 337 338.

Devraj and the Intoxication Demon

Following his victory over Dharaka, Kartikeya becomes both War God and Devraj 351 377. When Maya Asura's Intoxication demon infiltrates the Heavenly Realm, he leads the counterattack and defeats it in his six-headed form 391.

The victory feeds his pride. Kartikeya insists on keeping the demon as a weapon for an invasion of the Earth Realm and rejects Vishnu's warning that its power could spread through the Three Realms 393.

Defeat, Collapse, and Recovery

Kartikeya leads the Heavenly Gods against Maya's Firmament, ignoring Varuna's call to retreat. Their combined attack is reflected back eightfold, leaving the Heavenly Gods defeated and Kartikeya struck by his own power 395.

Unable to bear the loss, he disperses into six divine-energy spheres and flees. After the Pleiades Goddesses' formal reception worsens his emotional state, Indra and the gods recover the spheres and restore him with the Great Bag 401 411 412. Kartikeya then lashes out violently until Indra and Andhaka restrain him, after which he begins to accept that defeat is part of growth 413 414.

Relinquishing Authority

Kartikeya later doubts his fitness as Devraj and considers Surya as a successor. He ultimately steps down, allowing Sani to assume the Devraj position 450 454 459. He also offers the War God role to Andhaka, acknowledging his brother's strength and ability to defend the Heavenly Realm 460.

Later Service

Despite his earlier resignation, Kartikeya continues to act as a defender of the Heavenly Realm. He accepts Ganesha's victory in their race, takes command when the gods seek Shiva's help, and returns beside Indra, Andhaka, Ganesha, and other gods when a major battle begins 544 562 690.
