Background / History

Hongjun and Luohu both survived a strike from Pangu’s axe, turning calamity into survival in the Primordial World. Through fragments of the Jade Disc of Creation, Hongjun learned that the world’s Heavenly Dao was incomplete and began planning to replace it. He discovered that Luohu intended to establish the Demon Path in its place; should Luohu succeed, Hongjun would have no refuge and faced the annihilation of his soul and spirit. Hongjun therefore sought allies to eliminate his old rival. 13

During the conflict surrounding the Three Clans, Hongjun warned Yuan Feng that a demonic force was manipulating the clans’ disputes, helping prevent open war between the Phoenix and Dragon Clans. He also lectured Qing Xuan for one hundred years, enabling Qing Xuan to reach the peak of the Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm. 6

Hongjun later pursued Luohu directly. He dispatched his Evil Corpse to scout Luohu’s black mist and grand array, then rallied allies—including Yang Mei, Creation, Qian Kun, Ancestral Dragon, Yuan Feng, and the Four Creation Daoists—against the Demon Path. 13 18 19

After Luohu activated the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation, Hongjun devised a plan to break its four gates. Ancestor Qian Kun sacrificed his Law power to breach one gate, and Hongjun swore to kill Luohu in vengeance. 20 In the final confrontation, Hongjun fought alongside his Good and Evil Corpse clones, countering Luohu with several Innate Supreme Treasures. 21

Following Luohu’s defeat and the resulting catastrophe in the Western Continent, Hongjun sought the God-Slaying Spear from Qing Xuan, offering Innate Supreme Treasures in exchange. 22 He subsequently attained Sagehood and established Purple Cloud Palace as the site of his sermons. 32

At his second sermon, Hongjun expounded the method of Severing the Three Corpses and accepted the Three Pure Ones and Nuwa as disciples. He later accepted Jie Yin and Zhunti as nominal disciples, citing his debt to the Western Continent, and appointed Dong Wang Gong and Queen Mother of the West to govern male and female immortals. 42 43

During his final sermon, Hongjun explained the three paths to sainthood: proving the Dao with strength, severing the Three Corpses, and attaining sainthood through merit with Primordial Violet Qi. He distributed seven strands of Primordial Violet Qi, then announced his intention to merge with the Heavenly Dao. 49

After merging with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun appeared increasingly cold and detached. He nevertheless intervened to rescue Jie Yin and Zhunti from Qing Xuan, trading the Six Innate Futons for Jie Yin’s release. 63 Later, Qing Xuan encountered him in Chaos and learned that Hongjun had split his consciousness into Yang and Yin Aspect Bodies, with the Yin Aspect Body merged with the Heavenly Dao. 80

Personality

Hongjun is calculating and strategic, acting early against Luohu because the Demon Path threatened both the Primordial World and his own survival. He uses reconnaissance, alliances, formations, corpse clones, and spiritual treasures rather than relying on raw force alone. 13 19 20 21

He is capable of gratitude and loyalty. Qian Kun’s sacrifice provokes a personal oath of vengeance against Luohu, while Hongjun repeatedly recognizes Qing Xuan’s assistance and later negotiates directly rather than escalating conflict. 20 22 63

After his union with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun’s demeanor becomes cold enough to unsettle Qing Xuan. His Yang Aspect Body, however, retains a more human and playful disposition. 63 80

Union with the Heavenly Dao

Hongjun announces his merger with the Heavenly Dao after the final sermon. His later appearances reveal that this union split his consciousness and altered his temperament, leaving a Yin Aspect merged with the Heavenly Dao and a separate Yang Aspect Body in Chaos. 49 63 80

Reunification in Chaos

At the peak of Primordial Unity Twelve Layers, Hongjun asks Qing Xuan to help reunite his Yin and Yang aspects. In return, he offers to upgrade Qing Xuan’s Primordial Halberd into a Chaos Spirit Treasure and raises the possibility of Qing Xuan obtaining the Chaos Bead. 81
